I love snacks. We always have snacks in the house. My favorite when I was a kid was Chips Ahoy! My kids love Oreos and I'll occasionally drop an Oreo into the Vitamix (because unhealthy smoothies taste better). I'll occasionally grab a Chips Ahoy!, but to be honest they are kind of gross. Today, I prefer Tate's chocolate chip cookies. The problem is that at the local IGA, they are always out of the regular Tate's chocolate chip cookies and have instead the gluten-free, macadamia nut, or white-chocolate shit. I wish Tate's would just concentrate on one or two flavors. When it comes to potato chips, it's Cape Cod Salt and Vinegar. However, their availability on the shelves is even worse than Tate's cookies, especially with the Salt and Vinegar flavor. I believe Cape Cod is a smaller operation, so they don't have the big bucks like Nabisco, Lays, or Mondelez to buy up all the shelf space on the supermarket aisle (yes, this is how real-life works - horrible ain't it?)

Anyway, @tommytakis, my personal Korean snacks consultant, sent me two bags of the Haitai Korean Butter chips. I"m sold. I think these may become a staple in the house, if I can get my hands of them. Maybe next time the family is in Houston. We hit an outdoor mall there with our favorite hole-in-the-wall Hong Kong Dim Sim place. Next door to that is an H-Mart. Before we head back home, we hit the H-Mart and load up the cart with bunch of goodies like Gochujang (Korean red pepper paste with fermented soybeans - think miso), red pepper flakes, special Korean soft tofu. The rest of the cart is then filled with snacks. These snacks disappear after three days.

I don't have any photos of the chips because this is my last bag so I'm saving it. Maybe later I will provide photos. The chips are thin-cut without an excessively hard crunch, sort of like Lays. They are crisp, but melt in your mouth and won't cut into your gums or roof of the palette (looking at you Kettle). My daughter said these chips reminded her of Popeye's Chicken biscuits after we spread on the stuff from the Popeye's butter and honey packets. Right on. There's definitely a bit of sweetness that does take some time to get used to, but it's not overpowering sweetness like Oreos or Cracker Jacks. The butter is a bit like the butter in popcorn at the movie theaters. There's also a bit complexity. I'm tasting hints of soy milk, whey (the stuff I use in my protein shakes and smoothies), even a drop of soy sauce, and finally, even a hint of sour!

I don't think my son loved them, but he did acknowledge their uniqueness, which meant (not shit). I think he's still an Oreo guy. The rest of the family loves the Haitai Honey Butter Chips.

the H-Mart in Westminster, CO is equally great for finds such as those above.
Love going into H-Mart for a couple whole mackerel fish (with heads freshly removed) for dinner after a couple hours on the smoker. And loading up on Garlic Shrimp Chips and other cool looking surprises from the snack aisle.
or freezer section - like who knew octopus balls were so damn good!??

^ That is pure win. Maybe next time I'll bring the big cooler filled with ice. I can get fresh fish here, but not mackerel. Maybe we need mackerel flavored chips?

Where are the measurements and the GONAD panel for these?

... kidding. I love snacks too and if you continue to do more of these, at some point I'll need some kind of ad blocker otherwise I'll be on cholesterol lowering medication like the rest of my family.

I love it how you place these next to the healthy fruits... and by going by the look of those bananas, it looks like the preference aren't those.

Good read. Just one thing: gochujang is made by fermenting chili powder and paste made of sweet rice, not soybeans. A miso-like ingredient is available in Korean cuisine, doenjang, but it is not spicy.

I remember the Honey Butter Chips craze in Korea when it was first launched many years ago. Due to limited supplies and high demand it was very difficult to get your hands on one, and they were being sold on the Internet over 10 times their original price. The craze has died down since but it still remains a popular snack in Korea.

Picked up at the Asian market a couple days ago. The bigger pack, 100g, on the left was $4.29 and the smaller, 80g, was only $2.19. Seems like just the packaging is different. Going to crack them open today and will snap a few pictures of them.

Went to an anime con today, some vendor were selling the Haitai Korean Butter Chips for $7 a pop (overprice, but I know since I was at a con and it was the first time I saw them). Got a bag mostly to give to the GF. I had a few bites.

It was like someone pour liquid butter all over these chips with pure fat tasting on top with adding honey. I feel like I was gaining a few pounds after a few bites. Not eating this stuff again, I feel like a heart attack was coming upon of me and the flavor was too damn rich with all the other stuff they put into these chips.

Koreans are weird with their food (eating foods that kill their anuses, kimchi fetishes, etc.), but then again they think American food is weird and terrible so I guess we are even then in this department.
