I’ve always been curious about how far I can push these 6.5” full rangers. BK16 cabinets will always have a place in my heart because those were my first set of “real” speakers thanks to @purr1n .

Only gripe I had about the bk16 is how the low-end doesn’t feel nearly satisfying as using my BWC JBL L99. I wanted to see if I can find a cabinet design that retains the midrange purity with a more filled low end.

@Jh4db536 recommended that I check out a more modern horn design, so I ended up building a Haruna double horn cabinets with my own version of the Supra baffle to accommodate the double magnet sigma drivers I have.

After couple weeks of slowly planning, cutting, and gluing, I finished building the cabinets.

They are freakin tall! 72” so I couldn’t even carry them upstairs without my dad’s help haha

    how do they sound?
    - I’m still playing with the internal stuffing, but they sound much more full and digs deeper in the lowend than the bk16.
    - they also sound bigger and “taller” in general. Stages like a beast basically
    - these don’t sound as beamy as bk16 and less sensitive to positioning.
    - dynamics are lively, but I do feel like it could benefit a supertweeter for a bit more sparkle so I plan on adding a Fostex T500A mkii with L-pad

I’ll continue this thread with my build experience and once I settle on the internal damping and finishes, I will post a more in depth impression. Overall, I struggled at times, but I’m glad it turned out decent as my second woodworking project.

will most likely design a side mount using 8020 rails and 3d printed mount maybe

Make a larger disc like supra-baffle for the wide-bander and mount supertweeter to the side and up. This way no weirdness in horizontal polar response.

With xover, don't L-pad. Just add a resistor in series with the supertweeter. This will effectively raise the impedance of the driver so you can user a lower value cap. Lower value cap means the same money can be spent on a higher quality / higher voltage (lower ESR) cap.

The BK-16 will work with the fe168EZ, but it really isn't ideal. If you want another project, you may want to consider Nagaoka's design specific to the fe168ez. Alec / jk47 built these cabs and it was the best I've heard it. Regardless, no BLH design with a 6" driver will compete with a 12"+ woofer when it comes to bass quality.

    Excellent work!

Just look to Cain & Cain audio double BeN

Besides space considerations, any reason a BLH + BWC wouldn't work? I often see front loaded midhorns with a big woofer but never really a BLH.

Just from judging by the picture, looks like the supertweeter needs to be positioned ~45deg from horizontal? Is this to prevent the horizontal polar response as marv mentioned above?

The baffle has crosshair markings so you can see it's definitely 45 deg. A completely horizontal arrangement would cause comb filtering in the crossover region.

    edit:
In general you also want to avoid symmetry with speakers. Horizontal position would have vertical symmetry.

You also might want to be able to adjust the depth for time alignment

Install those slides/worktable rails so you can move your brackets around.

Micrometer-screw fine adjustment. (cv Speaker Porn thread).

But no, I didn't just drop in to make a silly comment: lovely work, they are beautiful!

    I think it's called a miter bar, or T-track or T-bar?

Do you mean the linear bearings plus a T or L brake? Turn the profile 45 degrees and you'll have a linear bearing that, with a linear brake, will constrain 6DOF. LOL, overkill.

Overkill? Naw this is for empirical determination of optimal supertweeter placement. We haven't gone far enough!

finished gluing the side panel, sanded down the imperfections, and added Fostex T500A mkII.

I think the T500As were the last piece of the puzzle for the Harunas. Now I don't feel like I am missing anything from the extreme ends and it blends in so nicely it's kind of crazy

I didn't add any crossovers, just a simple L pad for each channel.

I had a friend come over recently to hear these (without the supertweeters) and the first thing he said was, "Yeah I don't miss the JBLs."

I'll post a more in-depth impressions of these once I've lived with them for a couple of months
