I have been out of action with some nasty strain of flu for the last couple of weeks, but my head/ears are finally back to normal, and I got to try the cork mod out tonight. Many thanks for the excellent mod OJ!

For reference, I am also using a variant of sorrodje's resonator mod (decored shure olives, about 5mm tall), and as I noted in the resonator thread, I ended up shelving my anax mod felt/foams after trying various versions of the resonator mod. The resonator + cork, however, is a real winning and complementary combo. The resonator tames the 6k peak, without adding the higher frequency ~15khz peak present in the hd800S. Simultaneously, the cork really cleans up the imaging, like the anax mod but without the significant perceived loss of air and space. I've been playing through my normal array of test tracks, including various MFSL cuts, favorites from the Decca Sound, and a handful of LFF's jazz recommendations from his HF blog days, and I think this really is the best I've heard hd800 brass and string timbre to date.

Thanks again so much for your time and energy in promoting and distributing this mod OJ. It really is hard to imagine the hd800's sounding much better.

Yeah I did realize that pretty quickly after cutting out the 2.0 template. I actually prefer the 2.0 shape.

Did you ever experiment with the 2.0 templates, @OJneg? The different velour pads and foam being put in the cup in the thread by stratocaster makes me wonder how effective covering more of the metal screen goes, though I do remember the creatology foam not working so well in this regard before.

Covering the metal screen with foam/felt/cork is going to sound bad. The SBAF absorber is the best attempt to maintain the openness while still reducing the cup reflections.

How come the 2.0 mod had those larger templates?

Mine too. Installed this morning - thinking I'm liking SD + cork without SBAF absorber the best.

Different time frame, people had no idea it had a weird impact on the sound. Now at least in my extensive testing I can say that a ring that fits near perfectly on the metal part without interacting with the mesh is the best way to go. Hence why 1.0 works better. If you prefer more warmth, stack some Silverstone foam on top of the cork.

Got mine in as well! Thanks Oj!
Just echoing what everyone else has found...good amount of improvement!
I'm still waiting for the SD resonator but tried some foam tips I have laying around with the cork mod and it's sounding great...highs are tamed and better bass.
I think because it's less bright, I can hear music to my normal loudness level and everything sounds better.
Now, just have to wait and try this with the SD resonator.

OJ, did receive your cork mod about 10 days ago but I was waiting for the SD as well. Installed them today. Definite all-round improvement with better bass extension and just that slight reduction in the highs which enables me to listen to music that much longer than before. Thanks much to you and @sorrodje for this combination.

Just thought I'd throw in a quick update, I'm really enjoying just the trapezoid with my own variant of the superdupont resonator mod installed. For now the ring isn't doing what I want and adds some oddities to the sound, I might try it again with it more trimmed down.
