The measurements above were made without velvet inlays.

As for the leather pads I applied the following modification: I removed the transparent lip from under the pad and lined the inner side of the pad with a very thin layer of velvet and then glued on the black D-ring that attaches the pad to the HD800. Basically you then have leather on the outside and velvet on the inside, but the shape of the pad and the inner diameter of the opening is the same as stock.

The leather pad does not reduce the distance to the driver as the following pic shows, comparing new pads with the leatherized one:
    comparo.jpg

Now, I do not think that the outside leather changed the sound. Lining the old pads with leather was mainly done to refurbish old pads that I got used. And the attempt was NOT to change the sound signature, but to have a replacement pad that I could use instead of having to get rid of smelly old pads.
But I do think that the velvet lining inside, in combination with the removal of the transparent plastic lip, makes a difference. This basically had the same effect as the velvet inlays that I previously used, with the advantage of not having to stuff anything into the cup and thus reducing the cup volume.

Oh, I didn't know that you put velvet on the inside. It makes a lot more sense now. I still think that the old pads might compress differently (maybe you can put a book on them and measure the distance or something) and the velvet on the inside and the closer distance to the driver make the difference.
I also think that further discussion on this topic should take place in your thread, instead of @sorrodje's thread.

I have absolutely no intention of hijacking this thread. Just wanted to give some further input. Just to finish the driver distance thing up, as you suggested I measured the height of both pads with the same book on them, 12mm on both. So, there is no difference in distance.

No kidding, I wasn't really keeping tabs on this since I'm not rocking the HD800 but wow... 125 orders and counting, in under a month, I know Tyll's exposure probably blew this up but I'm still kinda surprised.

If/when you take that trip @sorrodje you should just pack a zip loc bag full of SDRs for direct distribution... Good luck explaining what they are to the TSA tho. :p

P.S. I'll buy/Paypal you a coffee (or a very minor piece of the trip) for your community contribution, pm addy?

    i installed my SDR's on my HD800's.

My HD800's have Anaxilus mod (as posted in Inner FIdelity) with the SDR's.

They sound gorgeous!! (Well done Sorrogje i cannot thank you enough!!\/)

The question is do most of you use it alone, or in conjunction with one or other mod? I mean should i leave them as they are now (since i am happy) or try the cupboard liner as well? or any other mod? (i have the cupboard mod already cut, as Anax2 from Chang)

    What is the general consensus?

Please try it yourself and report back! Looks like you are all set to try Anax only vs Anax + SDR vs SDR only.

    What do YOU think?

Yup. Everyone should do seriously his homework. try different mods separately , then together carefully. Such experiments take time and patience but it's rewarding.

Well, it is a little complicated since i have had the Anax2 mod (rug/cupboard liner) over the Anax 1 mod, and had tried various tips etc in the center hole, together with my 5 year old completely demolished pads.

Then i got new pads, and removed Anax2 (leaving Anax 1 in place) and placed the SDR.

The first combination sounded "dead" with diminished bass and forward mushy mids and less "air".

Immediately the second combination sounded like my familiar HD800 sound without the harshness and slight improvement in the bass.

I am sorry this doesn't sound like a methodology of comparing things, but i have very limited free time, plus the time i have i listen mainly to vinyl and speakers.

I am going to listen to it like this a bit more and then maybe add the Anax2 on top again to see if there is any difference.

Take your time. Try with sdr only for a few listening sessions. Then add anax mod 1 and/or 2. Choose what you prefer. Job done.

@listen4joy : Cool. Don't worry about the height, it's not consistent and depends how the felt is squeashed or not. just expand it properly in the hole ( paper at the bottom, creatology ring flush to the top) and once fitted , the SD resonator height will return to 7mm. ;)

Question about the Shure Olive plug. I opened my drawer of old headphone stuff and found a large olive. Mine are made out of a thin sheet of rubber-like material folded into the olive shape. The pictures of the mod show cutting of the tip of the Olive and the cross section shows a solid interior with the hole in the middle. If I cut off the tip of my olive I will have an empty cylinder since there in no material on the inside except the folded sheet that would be cut off in the mod process. I guess my question is did the Shure part change in time to a solid cylinder with a hole in it? Don't mind bying the "new" Olives but just checking before I do the deed.
