That didn't work at all. Also, three tubes > one tube.

I'm decent at making 3D models, if anyone wants to draw up a few hand-drawn schematics, I can turn them into stuff people can order from Shapeways.

That's a great idea! If we can get the exact measurements and calculations, then a 3D printed option would make modding so much easier and less scary.

Right. The nice thing is we can print it out of a nonresonant flexible plastic that has a bit of give to it, like Elasto Plastic, or we can get highly precise with the ultra precise resin options, not a Shapeways sales rep here but the site is pretty addictive, I've spent about $10k there this year. Not a lot of limits to what we can do with it since it's printed a la carte, we may well be able to beat whatever Sennheiser is doing. I'm happy to print off the first round and send them to someone who wants to do hardcore measurements on them. Plastic pieces run 2-3 bucks each.

I think as a community here we can figure something out and keep testing until we perfect it. I didn't even think of 3D printing for this mod (or the previous anax mod) until now. We also have a member, Tak, who does 3D printing designs.

And it's nice to see you here Peter :D

    THE SUBJECTIVE LISTENING TEST!

Shall we call this the HD800 Z28 mod? Consists of two elements:
    1. Regular rug liner (but NO Creatology trapezoid or ring pieces)
    2. The three straws stuffed with open cell foam on top of a Creatology foam disc stuffed in the middle gap of the HD800 driver.
The primary intent of the Z28 mod was not to increase any warmth or decrease the mid or high treble, but rather to tone down the hardness or glare associated with the 6kHz peak. The secondary intent was to reduce the overly diffuse sound of the HD800, slightly narrow the stage width, and improve imaging precision. If you like the HD800 stock, I would not recommend this mod for you.

Note that dust covers were used. I just took a picture of the mods without the dust cover.

    VERDICT:

It's still bright, but a lot of that hardness and glare isn't there anymore. I went back and forth between the HD800Z28 and my modded HD650s and found them somewhat tonally "compatible". Obviously the HD650 is mellow and the HD800 is bright, but the fact that I could go back and forth between these two headphones with the same music (without a period of readjustment or implementing tweaks like VTA adjustment, rolling tubes, swapping cables, etc.) does mean something.

I tested the HD800Z28 with recordings that I knew would be un-listenable (at least to me) with the stock or even lightly modded HD800s. Various tracks from MSFL Nirvana In Utero (totally OK) and Taylor Swift Fearless, Talking Heads Naive Melody (snares still a bit harsh) and Television Man (both from the ~2007 remasters). The Daft Punk Random Access Memories LP (which is as not bassy as the CD) and the Pretty in Pink (80s LP) did absolutely fine too.

I'm actually sad that I will have to part with these modded HD800s. I'll grab another pair when every other person decides to ditch their HD800s for HD800S's. This modded pair will soon be headed to TheAlchemist (formerly TheGame), who has been doing a great job at moderation, taking care of the stuff I don't even want to deal with. But for the next day or two, I am going to enjoy them.

@purrin nice approach I also tend to find with stock some tracks as harsh especially pop songs like the taylor swift stuff you mentioned
what do you think about the HD800S approach what do you think about the harmonic resonator thing there using(whatever its called)

This little guy is 17mm diameter to fit the driver center, and 10mm high. Base is 1mm thick.
Would be fun to play with this some more, but no way of knowing exactly how the real one works...

    Can perforate it, too.

Price came in at $2.78 per resonator plus shipping, printed from that semi-flexible Elasto Plastic. No idea if they'll sound good, but hopefully a step up from drinking straws. I shall ready the various foams to stuff into them. I've got 4 so I'll send Purrin 2 assuming they are semi-successful.

Edit: For just $25 per cup, you can print this little stinker out of aluminum.

Interesting design. Putting the perforated part at the top would allow the resonator to be tuned by plugging the holes with some sort of clay or the likes as this would change the effective port cross sectional area.

Plot twist: you can invert the resonator and still stick it down, then stick stuff in the holes.

Would be easy enough to make a locking ring that gets stuck permanently against the driver's center ring, the brave could superglue it. It would let you twist on compatible resonators.

No perforations. The mod was most effective with the straws being tightly sealed at one end. Also, would it be possible to increase volume of the tuning tubes?

Sure, can increase the volume by either making the whole thing taller, or attempting to thin the walls further, to the printing limits.

Here it is with the walls heavily thinned out and then spot repaired to have the minimum printable thickness. This is about as much tube volume as we can pack in. Also it's been extended to 12mm high. Bottom is sealed, no holes. Ordered 4 more of these ($12).

After this I can start over and go for longer ellipses too, to pack the maximum in.

Where can I get the material you used in the drinking straws (if you want to release that info)? I will try this out tomorrow if I can find the supplies.
