About 10 years ago I found out there was a very healthy world of underground/independent rap & hip-hop artists who were light years ahead of the gold-bling fake-gangster stuff on TV but sadly rarely heard outside of the independent record stores. When they toured the UK you could see them in a room of less than 100 people at the smallest venues in the city then chat to them afterwards. The lyrics were clever but they were also about having fun, showing off, or things even English suburban types like me could relate to – like the periodic table, soy milk or the zombie apocalypse. The beats were awesome.

Now I’ve totally lost touch but would love to hear what’s out there beyond the world of Kanye. Or even just celebrate & rediscover what was around back then. Here are a few of my favourites, hopefully you’ll be feeling this too & post some of yours.

This was the stuff that first got me into headphones. Not hifi – but “straight up dope - yo!”

Look up DJ Format. He is one of those DJs who tends to partner up with pretty good MCs...

awesome stuff guys! @FlySweep - what kind of stuff do you like?

@Deep Funk - YES! DJ Format is great & love the track with the guys from Jurassic 5 - the bear has skills!

Totally agree - such a diverse genre with the artists drawing on a huge range of styles/influences - really anything goes. Seemed like a kind of "golden age" for this kind of music a while ago - there was so much impressive stuff about. I'm sure there still is. Just need to dig around.

I remember the guy producing many of the beats behind the tracks I loved was EL-P. Always came up with infectious head nodding stuff - was pretty dark when going solo. Like this track below. Favourite exchange from YouTube comments:

A: This beat is so fucking grimey! I'm a caveman. Your modern ways frighten and confuse me
B: Whole track is grimy as literal shit. Its awesome

    lol

Nice stuff Chakku - some great ideas for me to check out.

EL-P, Madlib & Aesop rock were 3 of my old favourites - glad to see they're still going strong!

chakku- Amazing album - Probably a toss up between All Caps and Curls on that LP for me! short but sweet. Madvilainy 2 you say?! Ill definitely be checking that out.

Always enjoy the many faces of MF Doom & especially this chilled & amusing duet.

Took Talkin Honky Blues by Buck 65 out for a spin today. It's been a long time. Really cool album - spirit of Tom Waits / Kerouac / Wild-West. Every release from him since that LP has seemed a little strange. Was lucky to see Buck at Glastonbury quite a few years ago - he was playing to a v small crowd in one of the smaller tents. Very cool show indeed.

LOL. I don't about these southern rappers man. I like the beats, but sometimes you feel like having mercy and making it painless:

First song I reached for on the commute this morning was Larry Bird...say what I may, it's catchy.

But he's speshul for sure >

Ok - Jean Grae, a rapper who never really took off, but she's probably my favorite female lyricist...

    Song's produced by 9th Wonder.

^ hey nice sphinx - I remember her popping up on a few albums here and there and always being impressed. Like this one with Diverse & w/ RJD2 on the beats.

RJD2 was my favourite producer for a long time but he took some strange turns along the way. I always wondered what happened to him without realising the theme from the TV series Mad-Men was one of his.

Here's one of my favourites with Blueprint absolutely killing it on the mic:

I made the semi-painful decision to sell my decks earlier this year. I held on to a few select LPs with the hope of getting a single turntable again one day. This classic from '97 was one that I saved. 2 people rapping over each other. Shouldn't work - but somehow it does! DJ Shadow on the beats.
