How do you pronounce caramel?

Other: first 'a' pronounced as in 'cat' - uh - mell.

But yeah, "car-mull" if the word's followed by "corn".

I'm British, so "Carra-melle". "Car-muhl" is a bastardized version of it's original pronunciation. Similar to how a lot of African Americans say "Axe" instead of "Ask".

 

That'd be pretty common in disadvantaged white areas of TN as well. Likely true all over the south.

 

Carmel is a place with one tree on a rock where you go to play really expensive golf.

The other thing is part of a chocolate egg that bunnies lay when they say BOCK-BOCK.

 

I lived in the UK for a few years and carra-melle has stuck with me apparently.

This made me wonder how long it'll be until the "new" language of lazy texting will transition fully into speech.

Grew up in metro Detroit, mom and dad are both from metro Detroit.

Grew up in WA state... which is supposedly known for having one of the flattest american english accents around. Just means we're thin/boring on heritage.

Spent a few years in Boston area, and I'd just scratch my head at coffee shops, because they pronounced caramel like "Kaah-mell" - which sounded exactly like "Camel" (amount of cream). A good friend witnessed a poor Dunkin' Donuts worker being chewed out by some irate old lady after they messed up her drink order, confusing the two.

"I SAID KAAH-MELL, NOT KAMEL YOU @#$@!!"

I'm clearly in the minority, haha. My life has been split between Ohio and Tennessee, so I find that my pronunciations are all over the place.

My southern wife and I nearly come to blows every time I pronounce Halloween like Haul-o-ween. * shrug*

 

Option three for me, but like others here I lapse into "car-muhl" for specific things. Sometimes people will start off with car-muhl and I just mirror throughout the conversation.
