I am working on getting Fostex RP planars into a beyerdynamic enclosure. And I just had an idea...
What if you made a baffle that could fit two of these drivers, side by side? The total moving area would be doubled, which is interesting! You could mod them differently so that one of them takes care of more low end, and the other one does the highs better.

    Edit:
I am aware of multiple driver headphones, but those use different drivers with s crossover, which is a very different concept. I'm thinking primarily about the idea of increasing the total driver surface, so you get more of that "Planar wall of sound".

You'd just wire them in parallell on each side, I guess.

Is there a SPECIFIC reason why this hasn't ever been tried? With a Beyerdynamic cup, I bet I could fit two of those drivers on the baffle.

I'm certainly not an expert but it sounds like quite the challenge. Getting the two drivers in each ear to match, in phase and responce will be the trick. People may say it's a bad idea, I say tackle it and prove em wrong. It just might be a tough road...

There is a way to tackle that if you're okay with a bit of extra hardware and stuff. You can easily use a miniDSP and either an amp with dual stereo outs or two separate stereo amps. Put stereo connections on each cup, process the stereo input with crossovers and EQ and stuff, and route it to the 4 outputs. One stereo signal for each cup, giving you a separate signal per driver for each cup.

I am certain I could totallymake an amazing pair of headphones this way, but it's a bit annoying when you rheadphones literally REQUIRE a bunch of external gear.

My favorite multi-driver headphone idea is the JVC HA-SZ2000/SZ1000. They don't use crossover. Instead, they use the Kelton method. The bass driver sound comes through small ducts that end up only allowing the bass through, and there's a separate driver for the rest of the spectrum.

So that's what it is. I think Radius adopted something similar with the TWF-31/ 41. http://www.radius.co.jp/en_product/hp-twf41/

That, my man, is EXCELLENT! A mod after my own heart!

Now, that driver is way bigger than I imagined, so this idea is totally dumb now. Derp!

I will be using one of the DT series cans myself, which means more space behind the driver. I'm putting it in a DT990 for that specific reason. Good space, already dampened, and open vent

Edit: dream with me further into this concept! Instead of drivers side by side, imagine stacking two drivers. Then you use the DSP to remove all highs from the rearmost driver, and then you time align the two. The rearmost driver wouød reinforce all the low end for the first one.

Yeah, that's a bad idea, isn't it? What id the T50RP driver was used like that BEHIND a normal dynamic driver though? :D

That's an awesome idea. Tyll should review those, I'd love to see a FR graph. Quite heavy though, 485 grams.
