I just ordered a new material for acoustic modding that I haven't seen used before

I've speculated about this material ever since I saw the drivers in a DT880, and the HD700/800 uses it in different places...

    Fine steel meshes!

I have no idea what to expect, but I'm sure it'll be interesting. The idea is that it will impede air flow without absorbing anything. Felt is nice, but it absorbs energy. Steel meshes will act in ways similar to the white screen paper used in headphones, though obviously it won't be as efficient. I'm going to use it when I get back to modding my Fostex planars. I tore the paper off the back of the drivers because I'm a crazy person, and I feel like paper is hard to glue in place properly without it wrinkling and making noise.

I'll post observations and measurements if I see anything interesting when trying it out :)

Meshes came in! Very interesting material. It's super super fine, and it feels smooth like silk, but unstretchable and kinda stiff. Blowing through it showed that indeed it will build up air preasure really well, and dampen air flow without absorbing anything. I bought this for the Fostex planar modding. I feel like I have had to use way too much felt and cotton and foam in my current mods, eating up good resonances and leaving very little room for other stuff. If I can use this to force the driver to behave nicely BEFORE the absorbers come in, I will have more flexibility in what I do inside the cup itself.

Sounds interesting. Let us know how it works.

I wonder if it would have any odd resonances when stretched tight...

    I
Will only ever stretch it tight enough so it doesn't flap around. It won't have any tension to speak of.
