Back to my regularly scheduled avant garde program ;) If you are looking for some scary dissonant-ish rhythmic drive (Ligeti meets Ornette meets Leo Brouwer, backed by an AACM all-stars band), this is for you!

Sadly departed :( When his SFJAZZ show last year was cancelled for health reasons, I worried, unfortunately accurately. I only heard him live a few times, once with Badi Assad and Larry Coryell on their "Three Guitars" tour, and the others in more standard Abercrombie formats in San Francisco. Great memories.

Hadn't listened to anything new by Matthew Shipp in a long time, bumped into this last night browsing All About Jazz, digital pre-release via ESP Records. Meandering, meditative, dancing slowly between percussive, impressionistic, and bluesy. As good as it gets for a thoughtful evening listen.

    The Complete Ahmad Jamal Trio
    Argo Sessions 1956-62

There is NO ONE that plays behind the beat like Ahmad Jamal.

I just bought the 5-CD Ogun Collection set (finally found one decently priced!).

I only have vol 1 so I can't judge. Yours?

My favorite track, by far, is this:

    hi there,

don't know if it is the right thread, but I'm finding it quite difficult to get into Jazz.
Should there be a primer of what/how to listen to Jazz?
Or is it just as simple as we have a connection with the music or not...

I'm asking the question out of curiosity just to make sure I'm not missing something fundamental.

For the time being, I simply do not get it.

    Cheers

The only thing you're 'missing out' on is enjoyment. Listen to some of the stuff posted in this thread. If you dig it, great. If not, great. For me it's all about the music. No one can tell you what you're going to like, but if you're open to it, you might just enjoy. I hope you do.

There are good suggestions throughout this thread (especially at the beginning). I would use the search function.

Nice find! After that, if you know the "Sound of Music" tune "My Favorite Things," it's time for Coltrane's take on it:

Brad Mehldau does some nice things with Lennon and McCartney tunes in "Blues and Ballads":

Bob Dylan tunes are also quite popular with some current jazz players. Charles Lloyd does a great "Masters of War":

    And a lot more...
