He makes the music totally his, like a second skin. Maybe this is going too far, but most good jazz pianists seem slightly intimidated by Monk (no surprise) so they stay at a respectful "academic" distance even when improvising around the Monk tune. Clayton seems fearless, at ease, like just a few of his elders, such as Jason Moran and Kenny Barron. Speaking of Barron, the best Monk birthday show I've heard had Barron, Miles Okazaki (on guitar), and Benny Green. Speaking of fearless, Okazaki's Monk transcriptions (available as a complete CD set), but even better his live performances of Monk tunes are way up there. A taste:

Kenny Barron is just about everyone's elder at this point. He's a treasure, among the very best play-anything-with-anyone pianists ever. I have 5 or 6 recordings with him as leader or sideman and was lucky to see him play live 3 times. Kenny is the opposite of flashy and attention-getting; he's the consummate ensemble player. But when he gets going, he can make time stop, or at least, slow down.

Of course he kills on Monk, also bebop anything. I especially love how he plays Strayhorn tunes. That takes a different approach, emphasizing harmonic voicings more than rhythm (Kenny nails it every time).

The best of the times I saw him was in a quartet with Joe Foster/tenor & Buster Williams/bass (can't recall the drummer). Sometimes jazz takes the listener to very deep, meditative places; that night was one of those times.

Some of my favorite work of Kenny's is with Dizzy. His piano playing is economical but stirs something deep here.

Try this one--Kenny's piano trio covering Strayhorn's "Warm Valley." I love this solo: left hand playing subtle, constrained stride while the right gently swings through the changes. His style owes something to Errol Garner, but the beautiful soft, singing tone and micro-control of time are all his own:
