I know the jbl ls305s get a lot of love but has anyone heard the jbl studio 5 series? I can get the jbl 530s (pair) new for 300 and am considering it. I'm mainly interested in whether these are neutral and how well they work nearfield. I would also use them from about 6 feet away while while watching tv. Kef q300(pair) are 400 from the same source. This would be for a budget turntable setup along with the project debut carbon/tc750 I bought from Dr. Higgs.

Where are you getting them for that price if you don't mind me asking? I would call them neutralish but very well balanced (a tiny bit on the bright side but nothing offensive). They sound a bit more capable all around than the 305s to me. They have worked very well for near-field use IME but depending on your room, YMMV of course. At $300, the 530's would be a very good deal IMO.

My family joined a membership buying organization a few years ago while building our home. Its basically a "scam" and entry was a few thousand dollars . Overall on furniture, appliances flooring etc we have made it back in savings though. They occasionally have decent electronics discounts.

Nice! Well @ $300 I think it would be a very nice deal. At retail you could probably do better depending on your tastes. You can definitely get more "accurate" speakers for what they are going for right now.

I am looking at the 530s but I'm curious what speakers do you think are better than them?

I haven't tried everything under the sun but I think the Stuido 530s are very nice. If you get them on sale ($380-450), there are very few speakers in that price bracket that I have auditioned/owned that are as even handed in terms of FR and tonal balance than the 530s. Although I think their crossover is well implemented, it can sometimes detract from lower level detail reproduction. Despite that, they are not excessively picky in terms of placement or amping. They sounded good to very good on almost anything I had them hooked up to IME. I have definitely paid more and gotten less.

I did get a chance to have the affordable accuracy monitor in house for a bit and I think that they may be just as good as at a cheaper price. They did seem a bit more picky in terms of placement and amping but sounded really good for $200.
