Anyone think it’s a good investment at $700?

I wouldn’t exactly call it a good value, although considering that it’s over 7500 pieces, it’s priced proportionally to other Lego sets. I would consider purchasing it if my kids really wanted to build it. We’ve had several fun experiences building Lego sets together.

Is there a big difference or improvement to the ST version?

I just remember that the OT MF as the piece of junk that can was more of a key part in series...getting nostalgic of my childhood now.

I don't know, but people buy them up when available anywhere online. It seems like a crazy price, but when I saw one built and on display at my local Lego store, you start to think it really isn't a bad value considering the price of Lego in general and how huge the build actually is! I've been tempted by it, but have resisted so far.

If you're talking about the Millennium Falcon (75192) Ultimate Collector Series...for 700 it's a really great price as you're getting a significant discount already, I think it usually retails for about 800. If it's a new/unopened box, and once this kit gets retired (probably this year), the value will increase significantly. For the many years that I've sought out certain out-of-production kits, I've never seen a collectable lego set ever decrease in value. It's mostly always sellable at a profit especially when the kits are retired.

The new version is less blocky. For example the tunnel that leads to the cockpit area and cockpit area is now composed of a ton of tiny curved bricks instead of two panels with greebles on them. There are other touches too: more conformal pieces instead of plates on the top and bottom where the guns and on the side airlocks. The cockpit glass is now one transparent piece. New set has old Harrison Ford, Finn, Rey, and BB8 figurines plus new replacement rectangular radar dish. Old one had Luke and Ben which do not come with the new set.

Otherwise the internal supporting structure and the rest of it is the same as the old one, including flimsy support for the front two protrusions. See here: https://www.superbestaudiofriends.o...um-falcon-ucs-big-set.3576/page-2#post-110128

Given it would likely cost over $100 to ship if I sold it in 5 years, probably not a great investment.

Lego has caught on and sought to punish folks who load up on sets to pawn them off in the future. This is why the Batman Tumbler is still available. The other thing Lego did was jack up prices on the "ultimate" sets. The old UCS Falcon set was not anywhere near $800 even taking inflation into account.

In all fairness, they added an extra ~2400 pieces in 75192 over 10179. Even if it's all just small parts for extra greebling, or dividing one large plate into two smaller plates, I think the tradeoff is worth it in the far superior end result.

I didn't know OT and ST were so different!

Anyway, these are huge, and they weigh a lot--judging by special kits that my kids and I built together. If you think about the time to actually design these sets for the pieces to come together, maybe it's not that expensive. And there are a ton of plastic pieces--sorry Mother Earth...

As an investment, it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. If it doesn't appreciate, you can always consider it as a fun activity with friends or family (grown or otherwise), or by yourself.

I'm seriously considering picking this up... sure the price seems steep for a Lego set, but given the build experience and satisfaction upon completion, it is arguably worth it. At likely 20 hours or more to build without rushing too much, that equates to $35/hour or less for quality entertainment, not to mention the awesome build you get to display when you are done! Not too shabby!

Just make sure you have somewhere to properly store and display it!

How is Lego doing this (punishing folks) - are they taking legal action against private sellers somehow? I know that for limited or hard to find sets, they have been issuing purchase limits at least on their online store.

The punish by releasing the set again, thus making is less "limited"

If Lego wants to re-release expired sets, good for them! I'd rather have them "punish" the collectors who can't sell their sets for a profit than the consumers who can't buy a set for MSRP because it is out of production and only available second-hand.

I am definitely all for that, I hope they re-release sets. My family started collecting the Christmas holiday Lego sets a few years ago. But alot of the (really good ones) were already out of production/retired. Having to acquire those sets, I had to pay a pretty penny with resellers mark up (50-75% increases). It's the first time I saw how lego can hold their value even 5-8 years later, its pretty crazy. But that's definitely smart of Lego in doing that for sure.

Aren't the re-released sets generally redesigned as well? They usually have some kind of difference from the first limited set. I have the re-released Y-Wing they did a few years ago and that thing is a whole different beast from the previously released Y-Wing. Values of the original probably dropped when the new one came out, which I guess is what we mean by punishing hoarders/resellers.
