Loaner: Tavish Designs "Vintage 6SL7 Phono Stage"

    Loaner courtesy of @Inoculator

Tavish Design’s Vintage 6SL7 Phono Stage is a passively-equalized, two-gain-stage design using the 6SL7GT octal dual triode, a vacuum tube first introduced (by RCA) in 1941. Although miniature vacuum tubes (like the 12AX7) later became more popular in consumer equipment because of their smaller physical size, the 6SL7GT remained a favorite of many audiophiles for its linearity and low noise. Our Vintage Phono Stage was inspired by the current availability of several high quality 6SL7GT tubes, including the Sovtek 6H9C/6SL7GT, the JJ 6SL7, and the Tung Sol Reissue 6SL7GT, all of which are offered with the Vintage Phono Stage.

The Vintage 6SL7 Phono Stage shares the same basic circuit topology as our Classic Phono Stage. This passively-equalized, two-gain-stage circuit topology has remained popular for many decades. The reason for its endurance is simple: with appropriate updates, it is very difficult to beat without going to elaborate multi-tube circuits. In fact, this simple phono stage outperforms many (if not most) high-end products.

Our update of this classic circuit includes optimized RIAA equalization that makes the circuit less sensitive to variations between tubes, as well as a relay-selected JFET pre-preamplifier for low-output moving coil cartridges. It retains the excellent linearity and extremely high overload margin inherent to high-voltage vacuum tube circuits.

Our design also includes linear, regulated high-voltage and heater supplies for low noise and low operating drift. The 210 volt supply rail operates the tubes in their intended range - we don’t starve the tubes by operating them at low voltages. And, we completely avoid the use of switching power supplies. The unit is powered from an external AC wall transformer, using a small internal step-up transformer for the high voltage supply. This puts the larger, high-current transformer outside (and well away from) the enclosure. A sophisticated circuit board design with multiple ground domains eliminates coupled noise. As a result, the Vintage 6SL7 Phono has exceptionally low noise and hum for a tube phono stage, in a compact and low-cost package.

The 6SL7GT has been a favorite audiophile preamplifier tube for decades, and the Vintage 6SL7 Phono Stage puts it to best use in a modern update of a classic circuit. It’s not your grandfather’s phono stage - it offers high-end sound and performance, and exceptional value.

In addition to the assembled unit, the blank printed circuit board (with no components) is also available, for experienced DIYers. We no longer offer the complete kit. We suggest downloading the Assembly and Setup Manual before ordering the circuit board, to be sure you are comfortable with the assembly process.

The assembled version is available with either Sovtek 6H9C/6SL7GT tubes, JJ 6SL7 tubes, or Tung Sol Reissue 6SL7GT tubes – please select when ordering. Both the JJ and the Tung Sol Reissue versions ship with a selected low-noise input tube.

Very excited to be sharing this with the community. I went through a phono crisis when I moved to the MC space and was having trouble finding something I liked. @dmckean44 reached out and shared that the Tavish might be a good fit and boy was he right. I have adored this product, so much that I stepped up to the Adagio. You can find some of my impressions compared to some other offerings here: https://www.superbestaudiofriends.o...n-labs-phono-preamps.10320/page-2#post-337725

Bonus for this loaner tour, this is a sort of "try before you buy" type opportunity, as it will be hitting the marketplace when the tour is over.

Interesting, I hadn't seen this before. I'd love to participate, though I'm MM only right now.

Moving Magnet, all my cartridges are moving magnet designs, which means I won't be able to comment on the moving coil portion of the phono stage.

Yeah, I'm still using mine and love it. It's worked well with every phono cartridge I've tried with it.

I’m in, OH. Currently running an IFi and I’ve tried the MM5/6 but didn’t work as well on my system. I’ve heard the Black Swan and this comes at a more reasonable price point! Very interested!

Definitely interested in this. I’d like to compare it to the Hagerman Cornet 2 I built.

So glad to see all the interest! I will be getting this all packed up in the coming days and shipping this out to kick off the tour on Thursday. It will include the new production tung sol tubes (note one of them is marked as lowest noise to install in the input tube which is front right position). Scott of Tavish Design recommended these tubes when I ordered and I legit never tried anything else because I found them so stellar. Of course, feel free to tube roll to your heart's delight if you have some favorite 6SL7 tubes.

This is on its way to @loadexfa, so excited for you all to check this out.

One other note I wanted to give folks that I was reminded of when packing this up. The tubes are a bit tough to jiggle out of there. Easier if you remove the 4 screws and take the top plate off. This is easy to do, and also what you have to do to change cartridge/gain loading dip switches.

Hmm, not seeing an impressions thread in the Vinyl section, I'm going to make a new one.

Is it still possible to get in on this one? Hopefully the Mani I ordered will have arrived by the time it gets to me and I can compare them.
