    Hello!

Latly there's been alot of talk about HD600/HD650, but what about us who enjoy more bass slam/punch?
For those who dont want to pay HE-6 money and stereoamps, whats the recommended headphones?
    HE400i?

    Thank You

I really like the bass of the HE-500 (and just the whole package overall) especially for the price they are used nowadays. The original HE400 has the same great bass, its just painted blue and left its mids at home

There are many options. What are you looking for? Portable? Closed? Price range? What genres? I've heard dozens of "basshead" headphones.

I've never heard a fully open headphone that has enough bass for me when I'm craving it, so I always get closed or semi-closed for my bass headphones.

The Fostex TH600/TH900 are very good if you want the U-to-V-Shape signature and do well with pronounced treble.

If you want a relative bargain, the most epic bass possible, and are 100% comfortable using EQ all the time, the JVC HA-SZ2000/SZ1000 are the top of the heap for bass impact. They sound kinda like crap with the stock sig, but with an equalizer they shine and blast your heart out of your chest with bass.

For portables, the V-MODA M-100 are quite good. Very much V-shaped.

But as for my favorite bass headphone...

I will never stop pushing the JVC HP-DX1000.

I got rid of my Fostex TH600 because they barely isolate and the treble is too pronounced. They also don't do super well with Jazz or Classical, which I also listen to quite frequently.

The JVC HP-DX1000 are extraordinary with those two genres in addition to all bass-heavy music. They're my favorite headphones to listen to Classical music with--even above my beloved Sennheiser HD650s. Currently listening to DIPLOM - Krambupolka.

I wish you lived nearby so I could let you hear these glorious things. I enjoy them so much that I hunted down a pair of the Limited Edition JVC HA-DX2000. Same sound in black... the pictures of the wood sucks online (looks flat), so I snapped a quick shot.

To describe their sound... lush midrange, epic bass, subdued smooth treble. They sound wooden. Wooden instruments--from guitars to violins to upright bass--sound gorgeous.

If you're a big fan of pronounced treble, you might not love them. The bass? Heavenly. The stock sound signature has about as much bass punch of any headphone I've ever tried, and I've tried many. If you want to use tons of EQ/amping, you won't rattle your skull as much as the Fostex TH600/TH900 or JVC HA-SZ2000/SZ1000 (largely because of the cushioned pads).

As for isolation, they isolate better than the Fostex and worse than a studio closed headphone. You'll get the most isolation out of the stock pads or Audeze leather pads, and the most comfort out of Audeze vegan pads. They still isolate well enough for work with the vegans, but it's not like a Sennheiser HD 380 Pro, for example.

HE-500 and DX-1000 are nice for bass, but something very very very very interesting will come out soon (like in the next few days) that will meet your wishes. It will be reasonably priced. That is all I can say for now.

I wouldn't count out the Audio Technica ATX-M50x's. They are only around $160 but for the price, they offer good sound and plenty of bass IMO. As far as the HD650's, I can get really good bass both from kick drums and bass guitar/synth bass with EQ. The HD650's handle bass pretty well if you EQ them correctly. If you want overwhelming bass that engulfs an entire mix and pretty much sux at every other frequency but the lower end - beats pro's work. I am not necessarily endorsing Beats Pros, however in the bass department you can pretty much throw as much bass as you want at them and they can handle it - unfortunately, it seems everything but the bass sounds like it is coming through a old rotary telephone speaker. I think I would actually enjoy Beats Pros quite a bit if the other frequencies sounded better, as I like thumping bass, but I just cannot handle all of the other frequencies being so poor. After getting into the HD800's Z28 mod - I found that I actually prefer less bass now and more treble - it sounds so much more natural and it seems, at least to my ears, that I can hear a lot more detail in instruments - I know that is because the HD800's have good, detailed drivers, but I've added a lot of bass to the HD800's and in doing so they do lose some detail in other frequencies.

Since when is the HD650 considered bass-light? o_O

Not bass light, but a little rolled off compared with some others (mostly planars).

I consider it bass-light because of the rolloff as well. Back then I compared it to the likes of HE-400 and D2000 though, go figure. Nowdays I'm happy with HD800 and a little EQ.

I think we need to get our terminology correct. I always thought that "punch" was used to the describe the mid-bass of a can (something that HD650 has a lot of). I also thought that "rumble" was the term used to describe sub-bass. Yeah, the HD650 is not very good at producing low bass (the HD600 fares a little better in that department).

I also used a little EQ with my HD800 when I first got them...now I only apply EQ if I use the HD800 after listening to my D2000.

No comment on above. I will say that am pretty excited on this one for bassheads, especially in the context of requirements of the OP.
    • More bass slam/punch than HD600/HD650
    • Not HE-6 money
    • No speaker amps required (not even close)
    • Extra bonus: Movie theater subwoofer like low-lows
    • Extra bonus: Very capable and no significant weirdness in the rest of the spectrum

I'm hoping it looks, is built, and is comfortable as the Z7 but actually sounds good.

Bass quality is superb. Bassier than the Z7, but so much better quality. The bass doesn't strongly introduce into the mids either. My concern right now is acclimating to this extra bass that I end up finding the HD650s bass lite. Yeah, this is a fun headphone. Sounds good with Daft Punk RAM (CD) too, even though that's a bassy recording. Tells you how well stylishly tuned the headphone is. No, not a resolution monster, but just a lot of fun. And I usually hate fun.

    P.S. comfortable and gorgeous too
P.S.S. tempted to give this the SBAF Headphone of the Year Award despite its non-neutral tuning (and also because I love value)
