It's rather bad form to circumvent the F/S thread rules here.

    Nice co-worker! :)

Assuming they're in good working order the tall bottle Sylvania (3rd from left) and the RCA with the silver logo (2nd in from the right) would be good choices. I have examples of both and I like them in the Lyr 3.

Does anyone know what the brown base Sylvania is in this picture?

It's a Sylvania JAN CHS 6SN7WGTA probably with a round getter.

I like the older war time 6SN7 tubes and the early 50's Sylvania "Bad Boy" tubes in my setup.

I'm going to have to spring for a 'bad boy' sooner or later. I read nothing but positive remarks.

The tall Sylvania does sound good, but is slightly hot in the presence region, so it can be rough with brighter recordings. I have a "early Russian" 6H8C on order that is supposed to be great bang for the buck.

I have a couple of early 50's Foton ribbed anode 6H8C's (most likely what you have on order) and they sound great. Definitely a bargain at $10-$15 a pop.

That looks very similar in construction to the NOS 6H8C tube made by Novosibirsk that came with my Lyr 3. Here is what it looks like:

The tube in your photo has the old Reflektor logo.

I have one of those on the way. The one's I have here look essentially the same except that the plates are ribbed. Here's a picture...

The ribbed plates appeared in Foton 6H8S tubes manufactured from 1951 to 1957 IIRC (date code is in the lower-right corner of the logo on the glass, those pictured are from 1952 and 1956). The ribbed plates are reportedly the best sounding of the Foton 6H8C's. Inquiring minds an all that - I ordered a 60's Foton with smooth plates to compare them for myself. I'll post my observations once I've had an opportunity to compare the two.

Has anyone heard how the 6N8S 1578 metal base with holes sound in this amp, I'm considering purchasing 1 but it's kind of expensive so it would be great to get some impressions from others who have this tube.

I just ordered a Lyr 3. I've had the Jotunheim for about a month and it is killing me. I can hear everything that makes the Jotunheim great but my experience with it has convinced me that I don't want any of those things. Above all I want to sit and listen to my rig for an hour or so and enjoy the music and I can't do that with the Jotunheim. 20 minutes max before treble fatigue sets in. It made me pine for the Master 9 that I sold a couple of weeks ago. My K7XX is useless with it and even the HD 650 is too glary half the time. It sounds amazing but I just can't take it LOL.

I'm not trying to trash the Jotunheim. It gets "Nick Cage voice" HIGH PRAISE from me. I plan on posting again after getting the Lyr just in case there is anyone else out there with similar treble sensitivities to mine. I saw the descriptions in this thread and Marv's updated chart so I am hoping the Lyr is what the doctor ordered. I hate to give up my balanced HD 650 cable though.

What's your source in this rig? The multi-bit card?

Why did you sell the Master-9? Too big?

The Jot has the multibit card but I do have the DS card too. I sold the Master 9 partly because I wanted to try new amps, partly because it is huge and partly because I hadnt used it as a preamp in about 4 years.

So I got the Lyr 3 today and yeah this thing is much more my speed.

Right after I ordered the Lyr I got the "bright" idea use the Jotunheim with the Yggdrasil's RCA outs. I had fallen into a habit of not using the Yggys RCA outs while also using the Balanced outputs due to the current issues with the Yggdrasil A1. The A2 is better in this regard but right after I got it I still heard a bit higher distortion or static when using both outputs with the preamp and headphone amp I had at the time. The Hegel H360 and the Schiit amps don't have this effect on the Yggdrasil though. ANYWAY, I started to think I had made a mistake buying the Lyr because the Jotunheim paired with the Yggdrasil was much better - i.e. listening fatigue set in after about 35-40 minutes instead of 20.

The Lyr is exactly what I was looking for though. It has an effortless sound that enjoyed from the Master 9 so much but is a bit more clear.

Quick question: How the hell do I get the Lyr 3 case open? The Jotunheim is easy - just take the knob off then slide the cover off. The Lyr does not have a screw on the knob and i'm not going to try anything else without some sort of confirmation.

If anyone wants my Jotunheim with DS dac - let me know. I don't think I can post for sale ads here.

Sometimes there is no explaining it, it comes down to what sounds good to you as a listener. Personally I am no longer a fan of pure SS amps, and I have no explanation why, but put a tube in the chain and I may enjoy it. Tubes aren't the mushy mess I remember as a kid anymore, but I hear a bit of added warmth and harmonics that my SS gear just never delivered. Could be all in my head too, and perhaps some SS amps measure better, but the only thing that matters to me now is do I enjoy listening? A 'perfect' amp that I don't enjoy listening too is pointless.

    Enjoy that Lyr 3!

My first post, so hi everybody!
Currently i have a Valhalla 2 with Bifrost Multibit for my T1.1. I would like to ask you, if Lyr 3 would be an audible improvement for my T1?. I am also interested in synergy with such a bright headphones. I like depth and staging of my Valhalla and looking mostly for best timbre and realistic sound, like im being there.

I am reading the Lyr3 threads across the headphone forums, but I can`t decide which tube to try. I would like to try some better tubes. I am using Lyr 3 now with my 2Qute and LCD-2C. I am finding tube with dynamic and musical sound, not dry, not neutral. I am finding pure fun, deep soundstage and little warmness, not affecting clarity. Where to start if I don`t want to spend hundreds?

May I suggest the Westinghouse D-getter I still have for sale?

Do you notice any reduced dynamic range by using the soekris digital volume control, I got the the big brother 1541 so the implementation should be the same.

I have decided to keep both the Jotunheim and the Lyr 3 for the time being. I have been spending about 70% of my time with the Lyr though. The differences between the two are large enough to warrant keeping both at least for now. I didn't go crazy with tubes. I've got a basically new tung sol in there right now which sounds better than the stock tube and the electro harmonix and JJ Tesla I picked up. I generally hate tube rolling though - the main reason I haven't owned tube gear in 7 years. If anyone knows of a tube, under $60 bucks that is "Tung Sol like" but better, please share, otw I am done.
