HE-300 had a voicing similar to HE-500, just dynamic instead of planar (so bass distortion was a bit higher). If this is a tonal improvement on that then it's a pretty dang good deal especially with the new headband jig and cable connection.

Is it just me or do those cup shells look like HE-500's? Maybe they had a ton of left-over HE-500 cup shells after discontinuing that line, so that's funnelled into this.

This might be worth it just to have the housing to slap some of the older planar drivers into. Anyone know if Hifiman sells this frame and for how much?

I don't know what it is about Massdrop, but it always makes me want to buy things that I know have no use. I already have my 650s that I use all the time, but I want to get these even though they probably won't see much or any use.

Damn you Massdrop and your exclusively good deals...

Good eye on the grey color, stole that from the HE-500. Not the same cups though, just the same color.

The question is if it's good enough to not make me spend 200 on a used HD600 or HE400S. I know 100 dollars is a different category compared to buying something used at 200, but if the performance difference is large enough, I rather just buy the used 200 dollar phone.

It's a dynamic. Tradeoffs. From what I am hearing, very lively and dynamic, less of that ortho compression. Measurements taken. Combobulating data right now.

Now I regret selling the balanced cables from my HE-400S.

I guess the question is if someone already owns an HD6xx, especially modded, is there any need for these as well?

HD6X0 is better, but these would be good competition for HD5X8.

Amidst all the recent pricing craziness, I'm happy to see something reasonable that normal people will want to pay for.

Reading @CEE TEE's post on HF, it's clear that both HFM collabos were done with the idea of getting non-audiophiles interested in better sound quality. Based on the measurements and Marv's response to them, I think this will be a big hit for that demo.

Nice effort but I would prefer a $499 Hifiman HE-4XX with HE400 bass, HEX mids and smooth treble.
