    Added.

Some minor FR and distortion differences, but drivers among 580, 600, 650, 6XX are very similar. The one exception might be the early 650s which had significantly different FR and transients - "the veiled HD650s". 660S is a step behind with the slightly inferior 150 ohm motor. I haven't measured HD58X impedance, but I'd put it in the 660S category, but the 38mm driver makes for more distortion in bass, hence it sits just slightly below 660S. The HD558 a step behind the above.

Ultimately, I can see any person preferring one model over another as long as the other model is the the same league or there is just one league difference because preferences for FR, transient response, clarity, etc likely outshadow any advantages in technicalities, especially on more modest chains.

Finally, important to keep in mind that Sennheiser has been making running changes. There are at least two HD600 versions, two HD580 versions, and three HD650 versions.

Drop has been active for a good couple of hours and only just breeched the 500 mark. Nothing like the initial 6XX drop. Looks like frequent drops have saturated the market.

While I have no problem waiting I'm sure many do, particularly the impulsive hype-fi types. Unfortunately patience seems to be a dying virtue.

I think buying without hearing is the opposite of patience.

I'd wager something like 90% of HF buys their gear without hearing it first. The only difference here with massdrop is patience.

Wanting to hear it first is of course a good reason to not buy.

Did we mention it's coming out in... June?! Back to patience, I guess.

Both the FR and driver specs makes this new driver smell like a modified HD579.

We live in an era where we want/need instant gratification, which is an awful thing. The best things in life are those that require time and effort to acquire. They are then appreciated more.

Thank you so much. It was very helpful to make a decision. I sold HD600 and thinking to go back after trying several other brands... Will go for HD6xx :)

More like hd518/555/558/598 in 600's enclosure with additional dempibg in the back (and its so black to not to get caught on old drivers)
    Or even 660s's ones...

I have noted this many times that a superior overall headphone may have a signature that just not a preference to the user,
Also seen similar issues happen with equipment matching.

Yeah I fell into that so many times lol.
The urge of owning it overrides anything lol.

    OMG dam..
they could just be clearing out their stockpile of old drivers in new plastic ..
    The horror...

Thanks I just cancelled ! lol..
And I edited my previous as I don't believe this is an improved driver but instead either old stock redone or just a cheaper quality unit to increase sales.
Dam Senn is really not there anymore they got nothing new under the sun.

Well, 818 bought it in the end.

In June when they arrive I'll pair them with a Fulla 2 and make a nice present to my grandma; due to moving house and not all neighbours being deaf like her, she can't listen to classical at the earth-shaking volumes she is accustomed to ...

I was just curious if anyone here stayed in the drop and received their headphone as yet. I am waiting on mine. It has shipped, but will be a while still before I get it. Its going through a freight forwarder.

@purr1n has some. He is quoted on the new drop page. Does it seem to have an HD555 driver as is hinted at by some who have them in hand?

I received mine yesterday. They are much better than anything in the 5x5, 5x8, and 5x9 line that I've heard (most of). I might even prefer these to the 600s and 650s :S

Mine came today. I'm happy with the sound so far. I don't hear any veil. I can't really play them loudly here at work though. A really great value for $150/shipped in today's headphone market. The foam insert on the inside of the capsule grills is a big surprise.

I got mine today, these are my first on-ear headphones since my old Yamaha RH-5Ma that i used and abused for a long time, and wow what a pleasant surprise. Whereas with the RH-5Ma i had pinpoint accuracy L-R i had none of this 3D/spaciousness/holographic presentation where reverb effects especially sound very immersive. Listening makes me want to listen more, and i feel it could be, a 'gateway drug' of sorts, to the headphone world.

So far so good, and even though i had to invest a hair above USD200 when import charges and VAT were added, i still feel like i got a decent deal. A decent entry-level HP was exactly what i was after, and i'm happy i got that, remains to be seen if they will hold up to use and abuse over time as the Yamaha did.

I also want to take this opportunity to say hi and thanks to this wonderful community. I stumbled by this place because i had recently signed up for the MCTH and i found a lovely forum where reading the threads are informative, polite and fun to read. Imho this place strikes a perfect balance between the science and the quirkiness. Thanks for letting me share.
