So who knew the creator of Dilbert was a raging hemorrhoidal piece of shit with a low IQ. This guy actually had the audacity to claim blacks are a hate group, because of some dumb poll posed a question that made absolutely no sense and was not conclusive in any way.

He then advises white people stay away from black people and stop helping them, basically using the same racist attitude he accused the "hate group" of, only seconds earlier. Genius logic. He also doesn't seem to understand the results of the poll were BECAUSE of the long, insane and disgusting history of white people trying to GET AWAY from black people, refuse them opportunities, and to marginalize them as much as possible!

Aren't we divided enough as a nation?

Oh, the man is beyond contempt. Lost his freaking mind.

The thing that strikes me most about Dilbert, is how it slowly shifted in tone over the years. The boss man now often comes across as the most rational one, surrounded by idiot worker drones. Something clearly changed in that man's life.

As a Canuck, I refer to all people with the gender neutral term "hosers".

To be fair, I think this is a case where the popular understanding of a phrase has gotten away from the actual etymology, and a large number of people would misunderstand the meaning

Well, then it makes more sense to educate people on the actual origin of the saying rather than banish it outright because of the misunderstanding.

so any phrase with the word "balls" in it is now harmful gender or anatomy related term?

Their "context" explanation is that the statement attributes a personality trait to anatomy? The statement isn't related to a personality trait. And... I don't even see how a gender/anatomy interpretation makes the slightest bit of sense. I've accelerated my efforts so quickly that I lost control of my balls and they slammed into a wall? WTF.

I'm all for eliminating the popular use of offensive language, but at least get it right.

The acceptable equivalent in Newfoundland, commonly used by my (female) former boss, is "balls-deep". But that did confuse the Norwegians.

Not the first, not the last. And people can change.

Dilbert was and still is funny. The media circus around “elderly man rants stupid shit on YouTube” is not advancing any meaningful topic in, as you say, our divided nation.

    That’s ballshit.

All have to say about these purity lists is that they are on their way out anyway. The kids are alright and mocking all this overhead already. I see more and more youngsters entering the workforce… to work, with little patience for these things.

The kids are alright. There is hope.

I'd say 'balls deep' is quite distinct in usage versus 'balls to the wall'. I used to say balls deep all the time, but had to stop myself after using it in the presence of my institute head, where it was NOT appreciated. The opposing phrase/ideal 'just the tip' has similarly fallen out of my common usage, just for good measure.

So every time someone uses the phrase in their writing, they would include a statement on the etymology and hope no one takes the wrong meaning from it?

Listen, I get that they got the meaning the phrase wrong, which isn't good, but it does actually illustrate the point that the phrase is commonly understood to refer to testicles, enough so that whoever put this document together got the origin wrong and if you look up the phrase online most sources point out the correct etymology, but also point out the common incorrect interpretation.

If the idea is to avoid gendered terms or terms that refer to anatomy, then any phrase that's commonly understood to refer to testicles would probably be recommended for avoidance. That might not be every use of the word "balls", but yeah you might avoid it generally.

Keep in mind that this is seemingly a guide for use in writing official IT material and communications. You should be approaching any sort of document that's going to be officially released and read by a wide group of people with caution. It's not the same thing as informal writing.

I do some light technical writing and review documents for delivery to clients as part of my job, and you just need to be careful with the way things are written and the words you use in a professional context. For example, I understand the word niggardly has nothing to do with the N-word, but you can bet if something came across my desk using that word I would immediately replace it. If you're to the point where you have to explain why something isn't really offensive, you've already dropped the ball.

Fair to make a distinction, but I'd say there's considerable overlap: although 'balls deep' primarily describes degree of commitment whereas 'balls to the wall' is more about speed of action (while also, at least as I imagine it, connoting allocation of maximum resources), the latter does imply the former.
Heh - hadn't heard that one; yes, probably best avoided in formal situations.

Sure, but the etiology of 'balls deep' is to fully insert your penis as far as possible. There's very little way to argue that the meaning is being misconstrued, like you might for 'balls to the wall'.

LOL, I'd always imagined it referred to how far you were prepared to wade into the metaphorical mud or swamp. Maybe I've been giving Newfoundlanders too much credit outdoors and too little indoors!

(Or perhaps, too much credit for their relationships with nature vs too little for their interpersonal ones; I'm sure Newfies will do anything outdoors :p).

Yep, you are giving Newfies WAY too much credit. They are a dirty, filthy, smutty, mind deep-in-the-gutter sort of people. I never met a Newfie I didn't get along with wonderfully.

Depending on how well you know a Newfoundlander, many consider “Newfie” derogatory. Not so much directed at you, but at others not familiar with the folks of Newfoundland.
