Three of my favorite musicians. A lot of talent in one place here. I wish they would do an album together. It would be epic.

Relatively recent (May release) first album from a new prog metal / electronic band. No technically impressive, virtuoso-style musicianship, but some good songwriting hooks and vocal harmonies.

You might call me crazy but "The Hunting Party" showcases a more complex Linkin Park. I am not kidding.

This band is the first and best thing that comes to mind, especially from the 2000's. Too many "proggy" metal bands go too far into the world of fiddly, virtuoso type playing. Mastodon has lots of rock to balance out the prog. Being progressive to me is more about concepts: the build-ups, crescendos etc. Somehow progressive rock/metal in general became a sound and a style of music when it's not what being progressive is about at all.

This band is a great example, it isn't "proggy" on the surface at all, but it's quite progressive in its own right. For an example, the guitars are pretty simple musically, played in a much-maligned drop-tuning, but they serve the purpose of the songs.

Opeth combines (or combined, when they still played metal) elements of metal and old-skool prog like no other. Death metal and 70's prog seem like exact opposites, but somehow they make it work great on a tune like this. Mikael Ã…kerfeldt has done his homework. On this album I'm hearing some Tool influence in the rhythms, btw.

Occasionally one comes across some new music and you think after a couple of listens, "That's not half bad".

I have been playing this album a lot recently. It gets better with every listen. "Fade To Black" alone...
