I have a deal on a michell orbe + techno arm + shelter 501 cart. Around 1800USD. I was trying to stay under 1000 but should I just buy it and eat ramen for a year? Is it a forever table?

Fantastic table and cartridge actually. Forget the Ramen and eat air if you have to. Not sure how many hours on the Shelter 501 or if its an MK 1 or MK 2. But you can't go wrong with that setup.

If you need a cartridge, you can get a cheap, but high performance Shure M97xe, while you save up for an even better cart down the line.

If I may ask, what are you using right now for a source? Also, have you had any turntable experience at all before?

Currently using a Gungnir Multibit. No turntable experience and was looking sub 600 but this came up locally and to be honest if it'll save me upgrading down the line I can afford it. I've heard a project xpression10 before is this a whole other level?

Will be driving a bottlehead eros phono > bottlehead stereomour II > frugal horn XL with alpair 10 paper drivers.

You will, in all likelihood never really care to upgrade the turntable (unless you succumb to the deeper recesses of the vinyl rabbit hole).
This table is a superb British table and has a full bodied, coherent and very beautiful sound! A little less in the PRaT section, but more towards a weighty sound again. It is a well damped turntable. Definitely my preference for a table. You can get all the zippiness you want with different Moving Coil cartridges out there.

That is a very very nice setup you have. You will likely be in heaven with THAT turntable, especially coming from something like a Gungnir Multibit (which is in no way, shape or form ANYWHERE in the same universe sonically, let alone same league).

The Shelter 501 is a fantastic cartridge...you will be way ahead of the game with that cartridge on THAT turntable.
