I've been working on mods for my HM5 cans. So far I've put some Dynamat on the rear of the driver, on the plastic part of the baffle, as well as the inner walls on the driver side of the cup (and not the rear cup so far). I followed it up with polyfill.

Now, I think these cans sound pretty good, but there's one problem: the 2-3khz spike.

I tried using self-adhesive furniture foam over the driver. I scraped the adhesive off in the middle, and left a ring of adhesive on the outside. This didn't really do much to that spike, and just muffled the high airy stuff instead. So back off it went.

I think the best approach, as far as results goes, would be to get more of what's on either side of it. So more air, or more mids and lows.

Does anyone have ideas as to how I can accomplish this? My only idea so far is to increase the distance between ear and driver by putting para cord underneath the earpad.

Has anyone tried removing the black foam stuffed into the rear of the driver? I see people do that to their HD600/650's... Adding more damping there made the treble go harsher, so maybe removing it will do the opposite?

Replace the pads. the HM5 pads emphasize 2kHz quite badly. Its the memory foam.

You can try restuffing them too, and use something less reflective (like polyfil) but I haven't played around with that myself so I dont know what results it would produce. The driver/ear distance can play a part as well as 2-3kHz is a naturally resonant area of the human ear, but I found the pads to be far more influential in that region than others are for some reason, even on different headphones than the HM5.
