Aight, I'm bringing this one back too.

    Original: http://www.changstar.com/index.php?topic=281.0

The Martian's hitting blu-ray in two weeks, which means it is already available on the other pyrate site. It is fantastic, I didn't expect it to be so realistic. I kept waiting for a sci-fi twist of some kind, but none came.

Or perhaps the implausible yet realistically done ending is the twist.

Missed The Martian at the cinemas but I'm eagerly awaiting its Bluray release.

The film that's resonated most with me this year is Sicario. Intense, violent and beautifully shot.

I was initially irked by Blunt's character but the film is more coherent when you shed the preconception that she is the main protagonist. Benicio Del Toro is magnificent in this.

Do not watch the trailer if you've not seen the film.

Creed - I grew up watching the Rocky series and to me this movie was done pretty well and pays homage to what seemed like the lost and forgotten Apollo Creed. I am sure there will be a sequel at some point and Michael B Jordan is amazing in this movie.

The Revenant - DiCaprio and Hardy make an amazing pairing on this movie. It's a very bloody and brutal movie.

Straight Outta Compton - Watched this last night and as a big fan of NWA, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, and Dre really enjoyed the film. I mean some people only credit Dre for Beats but really he has been the beats master for many rappers. The guy has a lot of talent when it comes to music.

Legend - Tom Hardy plays both of the Kray Twins in this gangster movie. Really well done and Hardy is amazing in this movie as he plays both brothers.

Steve Jobs - Michael Fassbender is excellent in this movie as he portrays a very different Steve Jobs than what most people might have read in the Walter Issacson book. It focuses more on his relationship with his daughter Lisa and actually pays homage to Joanna Hoffman who is somewhat the unsung hero behind Steve Jobs. Even surprised Seth Rogan actually played a great part as Woz. The guy who played John Scully and Andy Hertzfeld were also really good.

^ I'm starting to like Hardy more and more. Mad Max was masterful, and artfully done.

@imackler mentioned how awful Jurassic Park was on the 'shout box'. As a fan of 'film', I have to agree, but sadly I think those movies shoot for a different bar where Avengers is an imdb 10.0 and Transformers: Age of Extinction a 1.0.

Mad Max was the best thing i saw in 2015.
Jurrasic World was no different than the Bollywood crap. Awful acting by the entire cast
    Recently saw the following:
    1) The lives of others - 9/10
    2) Life is beautiful - 8/10
    3) Lock Stock and two smoking barrels - 9/10
    4) Loopers - 7/10
    5) Unbreakable - waste of time, ultra crap direction
    6) Requiem for a Dream - 9/10 - By far the most disturbing/cold/brutual movie i've ever seen. Started to hate smoke and liquour after watching this, although back to normal now ;)

I'm actually very fond of Unbreakable.

And Requiem for a Dream is an all-time favorite. I hope you watched the Director's Cut which is even more brutal than the regular release.

Agreed on Unbreakable. I liked this one a lot.

Requiem for a Dream is just so awfully dark. I don't like movies that are this depressing.

Unbreakable - The plot was likeable and was very original but the direction was bad. The scene where Bruce Willis was standing in the crowd identifying the sins, the crowd acted so fake , as if all were waiting to just be done with it. I know its a minor thing but i just get upset with such lack of finesse.

Anyone watched 'Donnie Darko' and understood it completely ?

Unfortunately I read the book a few yrs ago and won't touch the same story twice...I remember I dropped asleep during watching the Shutter Island and the Girl Who is David Fincher...They're good thrillers but I read the books first, you know, punch lines....

I don't think it's meant to be understood completely. Seriously...I think it has holes no matter what angle you take at it. It's more about the feelings it produces than making logical sense out of it.

Yep, also fantastically depressing. He has another film, Breaking the Waves, that you'd probably enjoy.

I saw it with my father, who is a retired Botany professor and while he had a minor quibble with Damon calling himself a botanist (he was really more of a horticulturist in the movie), he thought most of the science was sound - a rarity in most science fiction movies. Very well done. A surprising amount of humor.

I did find it funny that this is the second stranded astronaut that Damon has played within the last couple years (Interstellar). Even funnier that his mission leader was also in Interstellar (though not an astronaut in that one).

a couple of films I saw recently in the theater

The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums - one of Mizoguchi's most masterful films technically, as well as one of his most romantic. However I still prefer Naruse's more realistic portrayal of women rather than Mizoguchi's self-effacing heroines.

Cemetery of Splendour - Very good, though maybe not as entrancing as some of the director's previous films which were more influenced by classic American avant garde cinema.

VLC is for mac. On PC you could try some Korean players (nokidding), such as kmp & pot. As for those 45GB Bluray ISO files, Powerdvd is the best choice, imo.
