Have not seen Venom yet. My daughter is a little afraid of it due to the posters. But my son and I are all for it. Will rent it soon.

I also like Hardy a lot. He did good in The Dark Knight and in some other one. I think it was Dunkirk. I didn't want to watch Dunkirk, but a British friend of mine said it was a must-see. To each it's own. Hardy did good. But Dunkirk was not a must-see for me.

What Mr. Hardy does with the role is amazing. It's more a film about what Hardy can do than anything else.

Wonder Woman was great. I liked how her fighting style was more geared to tripping up her enemies rather than impaling them (new Batman) or snapping their necks (new Superman). Warner should have picked Jenkins or the directors of the animated Justice League cartoons to direct the live-action Justice League movies. I think Zack Snyder got confused between Watchmen and Super Friends, and didn't grasp that Watchmen was supposed to be a parody (ultraviolent and cynical) of the Super Friends.

And who the hell was responsible for VFX (last act, fight against Steppenwolf, which looked like a darker more saturated version of the Plants vs. Zombies shooter video game) and sound-mixing on the Justice League movie? How does a studio spend hundreds of millions of dollars for such inferior quality work? Let's not even talk about the plot and how they screwed up some of the most interesting stuff from DC: New Gods.

Justice League was indeed a failure. Flash was bad. Steppenwolf was worse.

Spiderman 1558 through 2568585 were also bad. I mean, we watched them. Have a few laughs. Sometimes silent awkward moments. Eat popcorn. Forget about it. Keep watching Naruto. We are half way through Shippuden.

Which is why my son and I need to see Venom. To redeem the franchise. Hopes are high.

Hahaha. Excessively complex Last Airbender, or perhaps Airbender is like a simplified tightened down Naruto more suitable for the American audiences. I had my son explain to me all the powahs of the characters in Naruto.

Have you had a chance to watch Full Metal Alchemist? The original version was slightly better than the remake, but both are good - and bloody.

My son hates Spiderman: "What's up with the suit with Iron-man powers? Why is Tony Stark in the movie?"
Me: "So Disney can make more money by promoting the Marvel Universe franchise"
Son: "Why can't Spiderman easily beat a guy in a leather jacket and stupid mechanical vulture wings. That guy had no powers."
    Me: "I don't know. Don't ask me."

My son started watching Naruto @ Netflix. Pretty soon we were laughing and sobbing randomly to it.

It all pretty much revolves around Naruto + Sasuke bromance. But the series has plenty of meat. Just like Airbender. I find Obito's story quite engaging (it's a tragedy, but I somehow identify and understand this character well). Jiraya and Tsunade are also very interesting characters, specially Jiraya. I have a feeling my daughter has a slight crush on Kakashi. It is definitively not perfect. But it is great. I love it.

Netflix carries only the main parts of Shonen Jump. So we got Hulu, just cuz Naruto. Even my wife is hooked.

I did watch Full Metal Alchemist. But only the remake. My son got into it as well. I'll research more on it. I don't think I watched the original and all of the episodes. I did watch the recent movie.

Just finished Castlevania Season 2 (Netflix), but that one is a bit strong yet, so I kind of shy away from letting son check that one out. Two or three more years. Maybe one. Will play it by ear.

He is totally hooked with One Piece and Assassination Classroom. All that said, One-Punch-Man is hard to beat.

My son is indifferent to Spiderman. I ask about it, and he goes like "Yeah. It was OK I guess" and changes the subject to talk about One Piece koolest moments. Which knowing him means Spidey 583841.254 was shit.

EDIT: Most of the Hulu episodes don't have the DUB version. So we are now full on learning Japanese. Which is easy in the pronunciation part for Spanish speakers.

Black Panther was merely an above average Marvel movie, and that's not saying a whole lot, as the Marvel formula is about as bland and functional as you can possibly get in the world of blockbusters. The fact that it's nominated for best picture is ludicrous, but not surprising given liberal Hollywood. MTV movie/People's Choice awards? Okay.

Also, I think the merit of seeing an all black cast in such a high profile, big budget movie is legitimately a watershed moment (all black casts were traditionally seen as box office death, especially internationally), but has nothing to do with the actual quality of the film, so this idea that people were shamed into being positive about the quality was stupid. But we live in stupid times.

    Massively disagree.

Marvel has been building their universe for a decade over multiple franchises. We've never seen that before and Warner and Universal have both taken shots at it and failed spectacularly, at least in terms of making watchable movies. Even Star Wars monumentally sucks now.

I don't think that every plot has been cookie cutter either. Civil War and Winter Soldier for instance.

I'm not saying that the MCU is art, but I disagree that it's bland.

Shit. I just talked to my son. We need to watch Full Metal Alchemist. I remember watching the movie:

But we did not watch the anime. Will add it to the must watch queue.

Not a TRANSFORMERS, BUMBLEBEE, or Michael Bay fan. But I am a fan of some who acted in these films. Best of all IMHO is Hailey Steinfeld. I saw 2 of her teen films & was quite amazed by her natural, unforced acting chops:
    • 3 DAYS TO KILL: An odd amalgam of family drama/comedy/espionage, starring Kevin Costner. This film got lost at the box office but is actually very entertaining. I liked how it cycled from lethal spy action to family drama & back. Hailey doesn't have much screen-time in the daughter role, but she knocked it out of the park in the bicycle scene w/Kostner, so affecting & unexpected that I found myself tearing up;
    • TRUE GRIT: A very fine film in many ways (directing, acting, cinematographer). Hailey was a revelation in the tough-young-girl role. I couldn't take my eyes of her...kept thinking that if any of the galoots she traveled with took the time to teach her to shoot one of those colt revolvers--they'd all be dead in 10 minutes.

I mean if you break down the Marvel "formula", it's very cookie cutter. I agree that their long term world building strategy is impressive in a sheer empire building way. It's very clever. I just don't think the films themselves (outside of the first Iron Man) are anything to write home about.

We need to remember that Edgar Wright, a very idiosyncratic filmmaker with his own vision, butted heads with Marvel over Ant Man and ultimately parted ways when it was made clear to him Marvel wanted to stick to their formulaic way of making movies. So we got Peyton Reed's very shoulder shrug version that barely anyone talks about.

I will concede Guardians of the Galaxy is pretty "out there" design wise, and breaks from the norm a bit with regard to humor, but a talking Raccoon and Chris Pratt hamming it up does not an amazing film make. At least to me.

Which version? Or just go ahead and marathon both? Might as well as it will still shorter than all of Naruto.

Well, this movie has a cat in it. But it's not from Marvel...

This past summer I read one of those "Top 10 Horror Films" lists, and it strongly recommended a film called THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE. Couldn't find it until last week, when suddenly it popped up on Netflix. Finished watching it last night.

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3289956/?ref_=nv_sr_1

TAOJD properly scared the shit out of me several times and had me looking away often. It's very creepy. The whole setup w/a beautiful, tormented corpse is different. This is not teen horror: nobody sneaking off in the weeds to smoke dope or get laid, then getting decapitated. It's not simplistic or linear at all.

A very good actor, Brian Cox, is in this. And he does very good work in it.

The older I get, the less I like gore-fest horror, the obvious stuff. I much prefer horror that creeps me out, is unsettling & disturbing on the subconscious level. Films that I dream about for days after watching. This is all of that.

BTW, one of my early epiphanies about alternate forms of horror was Polansky's REPULSION. My stomach churns just thinking of that one...

No thread for music docos, so I'll deposit this one here. Great story about one of my favourite bands, even if a bit light on what IMO was their best period (early 90s):

Caught Alita: Battle Angel last night in Dolby Cinema. Really enjoyed it, I think that's because it was more of an "anime" style story, which doesn't appeal to movie critics. Superb audio and visuals, and I thought a pretty entertaining story.

Just watched Eden Lake (Kelly Reilly, Michael Fassbender, Jack O'Connell) last night. Haven't been this angry at something fictional in a while, and despite my being ethically obliged to suggest therapy as recourse I will concede my first impulse would have been judicious application of sledgehammer to face.

O'Connell is a terrific actor here, and when the film wants to ramp up the tension it grabs you by the intestines.

GDI Haven't seen Alita yet. Remember loving the manga even though it's been over a decade since I read it on OM waaaaaay back. @SineDave and @SoupRKnowva make me hate the fact that I'm basically the only weeb in the family and my friends are all too busy, haha. Solo movie it is I guess.
