No! Geezus f**k... NO! It's Luke Gawd Damn Skywalker and our last chance to see him on screen and you want us to watch him have a crisis and a breakdown? You want to put him in f'ing therapy? Geezus f**k, put a f'ing lightsaber in his hand and let him go do badass jedi shit again.

No shit you need conflict and crises and struggle and resolution, but build all that shit around the laser sword fights and space ship battles for fucks sake.

To the modernist mind (i.e. your typical management/creative type in hollywood now), putting "Luke in therapy" and in a nihilistic crisis is the only thing that makes sense. It's where they are at and where all human beings are at, or should be at no? You neanderthals in fly over country clinging to your lightsabers and Campbellian arc's just need to be shown how the Force really works...

Not that I misunderstand what you're saying, but Ironically, I'm in LA. That large antenna that is just above the hollywood sign I can see very prominently out the window from where I'm typing this. I drove past Disney Animation this morning on my way to the grocery store.

You guys make way too much of this Campbellian arc bullshit, henceforth I am calling it StanLeeian or Ditkonian arc.

What's next, the deep meaning of Zoroaster hidden in Star Wars?

All Lucas' talk of "archetypes" and Joseph Campbell was his way of "intellectualizing" what was essentially a popcorn movie. Both Lucas and Campbell are/were hacks.

The real thing that bothered me about Star Wars was when Han gets turned into an ice cube by Jabba and by the next time you see Lando, he's got Han's girl, his ride, his pet, and is even wearing his clothes! Who does that? Goes to rescue a guy so puts his clothes on? You just know that at some point he went into Han's kitchen, drank all his Space Beer, then placed the empty bottles back in the fridge.

I think exactly the opposite. When Lucas talked about archetypes he was declining any credit for inventing a new story, saying instead that all he did was take already written themes and put them in a new setting. In other words, I think Lucas was not only not intellectualizing Star Wars but I think he was annoyed by people who wanted to.

This is right. It's a basic outline as old as Homer and as human as most of human creative history. It stands out mostly because the recent SW movies are so meaningless, that and the size of SW in the popular culture.

At best, Lucas read through Campbell's The Hero With a Thousand Faces while going "Ooh plot twists! Let's throw in the Oedipal issues of father versus son. Hey, myths address taboos: Luke and Leia made kissies in the first two movies, let's make 'em brother and sister!" without even understanding the purpose of a myth's addressing of the taboo.

Joseph Campbell: Restating the Obvious, Particularly If You've Ever Been to Sunday School (or Jewish School, or Buddhist School, or Greek Gods School, etc.)

Seriously, this stuff is 11th grade scholarship, but instead of a succinct 7 page essay that makes all the salient points and associations, it's a book.

I respect Steve Dikto way more.

GL made old tropes (a bit) new again. Star Wars (ANH) is quite literally Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, and the Magnificent Seven (which is western Seven Samurai) made as a space opera. His innovations were in special effects and world, or galaxy-building.

Feige is supposedly developing a Star Wars movie. Disney is probably looking to right the ship. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy starts running Lucafilm too.

I know you guys love your OG trilogy but at the end of the day it was just a bunch of pretty special effects, a halfway decent storyline, some rather stilted dialogue, and a mess of contradictions due to lazy writing.

Colt's new custom title is hilarious though LOL: "Writes better fan fics than you"

Ayn Rand ruined Dikto. Ever read his Mr. A?

He left Spider-Man and Marvel because he became warped by Objectivist ideology and created Mr. A, his ideal Objectivist superhero.

It's kind of funny, in a sad way. I remember a number of great golden age Sci-Fi writers (e.g. AE Van Vogt) went downhill after joining Scientology.

Once I tried to imagine what Philip K. Dick would have written in an Objective (Ayn Rand) mode...once ;)

Know nothing about Mr A. But am familiar with The Question from the mid 80s onward.

Ayn Rand makes me lose IQ points. Her system is contradictory. I bet she never had kids and her parents were mean to her or died. Nutcase that I don't even know got that far. Well, ASR did, so that we explains it.

Sophocles was smarter than Star Wars. Deal with it.

I wouldn't have Luke consider killing Ben in that scenario. I'd have Ben's fall mirroring Anakins. You could have some Obiwan force ghost input to make the connection.

I think there'd also be some opportunity for badass Luke. Maybe he and Rey in the second film do retrieve some holocron that is key to them understanding the force? Maybe it's guarded by the spirit for some old Sith (Revan or Bain?) and Luke sacrifices himself so Rey can escape?

As 2019 comes to a close, I've been working on my top 100 films of the past decade (in order from best to worst). By no means a definitive list, and there are still quite a few films I haven't seen, but of the ones I've seen, these I feel are the best. I will post the first 45, and the rest at a later date... probably in the next week or so.
