A buddy of mine has been trying out the Jot 2, and is really not impressed with it as a preamp compared to the Freya S, at least based on initial impressions. Just figured I would give you the heads up as you work through your system decisions. He isn't a member around here but happy to share his extended impressions as they come together.

 

I appreciate that. I had a feeling that the Jot preamp abilities would not be anything special. Extended verification is all I needed to knock it off the list.

 

I was thinking something similar and it got me thinking. What makes a good preamp? How is one better than the other? Can't be simply features.

Don't let the newest shinny thing get to you. Isn't overkill what makes hifi worth doing?

 

Overkill is fun for sure, but simplicity is becoming more and more important as my kids get older! I do not think I could go back to the internal DAC card on Schiit amps, but a single box for speakers, headphones and volume control sounds great if it can come close to matching the Freya/Vidar performance and be useful with more than a few pairs of headphones.
