Curtis Mayfield was not awkward. He was ahead of his time. He was also very 70-ties and just a funky as JB, just more subtle...

One of those oh-so-useful tunes for singing out stuff going through one's head.

Handel's Hallelujah Chorus is another thing that one set almost any short phrase to --- but off-topic to this thread, of course.

Well there are still situations where a holy book with fine pages will suffice to hold tobacco and its alternatives. Oh Billy Connolly and the 60-ties...

Yes, Deep Purple was Prog first, Rock & Roll second. They were into weird things just like Pink Floyd and the Beatles. Check out their first album to get a taste.

No one was as good as Ian Paice in the 70-ties behind the drums. That guy taught me that there is more to Rock than guitars. The drummers :headbang:

    Great 70s concert experiences:

Colorado Sun Day # 2, July 1976 at the old Mile High Stadium. Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, and Dan Fofelberg.

Pat Metheny Group at Avery Fischer Hall in 1979.

Elvis Costello at the Calderone Concert Hall on Long Island in 1979.

Little Feat at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ in 1979.

Springsteen at the Palace Theater in Albany, NY, 1978 (the second night of the Darkness tour.

Pro Arte Chorale, conducted by John Nelson, performing the St. John Passion at Avery Fisher Hall on Good Friday 1973. Why is this a highlight? I was a part of the performance. The Chorale needed extra voices for all of its 1972-73 performances (the Bloch Sacred Service, Carmina Burana, and the St. John); my voice teacher finagled me an invitation to audition, and i had a very good day that day. More than made up for having to bow out of the All-State HS chorus because I had mono in the fall and had to miss too many rehearsals.

I'll give you a '70s twofer, Bowie covering Bruce Springsteen:

And even if disco isn't your cup of tea, I defy you not to love the exceptional guitar runs in this "Chic in everything but name" track (check out Nile Rodgers' consummate rhythm parts starting at 3:04):

I'm an ardent disco lover. I think it's the perfect dance music, funky enough to get you grooving but smooth enough to soften funk's harder edges. Also, disco is simply a natural extension of R&B. It got a bad rap because it became a huge fad that overshadowed everything for a hot second, and suddenly Ethel Merman was doing a frickin' disco album. I could certainly understand why rock fans felt threatened by a genre that seemed to spread like a disease, but the best disco music is fantastic.

I recently reconnected with this album. Brings me right back to high school/college days.

Some Hard Rock meets Prog needs to be added. Also Uriah Heep is awesome. Muse and Dream Theater took many cues from this band.

OMG, I am embarrassed, I actually listened to Uriah Heep back in the day, and this crap as well, hahahaha

Talk about Awkaward (I liked better when it was misspelled)

This is absolutely one of my all time favorite albums. Saw them a couple of times at a venue in Denver called the Rainbow Music Hall which never had assigned seating. Slept (or didn't mostly) in that parking lot numerous times. Also saw them at Red Rocks. They never failed to blow me away regardless of venue. Good Times.
