I cycled through a few LEDs a few years ago and was not satisfied with the local dimming, which wasn't as advanced. Once I got an OLED I never looked back. I'm sure the dimming tech is much better now but there's no reason for me to consider those anymore.

This is going to sound blindingly obvious, but that stuff is extremely present on the Criterion Channel. (There's also some of it on HBO Max, at least until their new Discovery overlords prune the catalog further, but Criterion Channel is the big place for it, and one that's not focused on maximizing shareholder value so much as making enough money to keep the service going.)

Honestly, it's because nobody cares about physical media anymore, to a first approximation. Every year, physical media sales drop by 20-25%, and the majority of what physical media does sell is to Luddites (which is why DVD is still vastly more popular than Blu-ray or UHD-BD).

Which is too bad, because yeah, discs are much better than streaming -- this is especially true on the audio side, where (lossless) TrueHD-based Atmos is muuuuuch better than low-bitrate DD+ on streaming.

I think Sony's long track record of innovation and excellence in video displays is a real factor. Some of their high-end flat screens have the most beautiful pictures of all. But their pricing is usually 15%-30% higher than the nearest competitors, which is hard to justify. Besides, talking about OLEDs, Sony uses LG panels.

When helping my cousin get his LCD/LED (which he needed because his viewing pattern would risk burn-in on an OLED), I spent serious time comparing the 65" Sony model that was the closest competitor to the Samsung he ended up with. Honestly, the Sony TV looked beautiful in a way the Samsung couldn't quite match. But it cost 40% more than the Samsung, and reviews from trusted sourced dinged it for certain things that mattered.

If I was the buyer, not my cousin, I might have gotten the Sony based purely on aesthetics. But the Samsung was a better fit overall.

It's hard to break from Netflix, given that at least some of all that content is high level stuff, and their 4K content really looks terrific. But I keep thinking that someday I'll drop Netflix and put the money into Criterion. Cinema, old school great cinema, is where my heart is and always has been...

wrt to Criterion, it's actually their physical media sales that enabled them to come out with Filmstruck, then the Criterion Channel, and I highly doubt that the latter makes up a huge portion of their revenue. But they are a special case, as a boutique blu-ray/physical media brand—much like the smaller but also excellent Arrow and Vinegar Syndrome—they know their customer base is willing to pay for the higher quality, esp. in audio as you mentioned, along with all the extras like better artwork, special features, etc.

I already have Prime Video (my go-to) & Netflix @4K rates (my wife's fave)...so yes, I could certainly add Criterion. I should add it, based on content quality.

But my relationship with streaming isn't occurring in isolation. The cost of cable TV and Internet (a monopoly market here) continue climbing, and every cord cutter alternative I check out has some kind of issue. I view all this stuff all together, and it's a lot.

Translation: I'm too cheap, but I'll get over it & do something soon (because WTF)
