Hello, my name is Joao Paulo. I'm from Brazil. And got in to the audiophile world a 2-3 years ago. My first pair of cans was a Sennheiser HD598. Then I got a HD600, HE560, Shure 1840 and now I have a LCD2 and 3, ZMF Auteur and a HE-6.
My first amp/dac gear was a ODAC + Objetctive 2 moved to a Aune X1s, so far I used to have a Yulong D100, some Audiogd stuff, Schiit stuff too. Now I own a DirectStream DAC Sr, a Woo Audio WA22 and a Violectric V281 with some interfaces to play with. Not a IEM guy, have some Speakers too. Don't have any goals now. But wondering about a Utopia and Studio Jr.

    Best regards

Greetings fellow members, I've been lurking around this for a while. I like what I see and thought it was about time to join. I been into two channel for quite a few years but am just getting more interested in headphones. Look forward to chatting with you.

Hey friends, 2nd post and I couldnt find this area until a member told me.

Just recently became an audiophile kind of person, got a Schiit dac and amp with Senn 660s and Beyer 1990DTs. Love them and just looking to get into it a little more and hang out.

Hi everyone! I'm a lurker from Portugal that finally decided that not actually participating in all the conversations about this hobby of ours was very silly. I got more "seriously" into this last year, when I finally got my first desktop amp and I've been having a ton of fun along the way :)

    Howdy,

I'm another long time lurker turned member. I've been an audiophile since I first started listening to LPs (before they were "cool"). I'm building a nice mix of digital and analog gear. Tube gear is my favorite. I've enjoyed seeing gear posted here and hope to share my humble collection. Glad to be out of the shadows and now participating.

Hi I'm Ainsworth (my real name -- My philosophy on forums: If I feel I need an alias for the forum, I don't belong there)
Note; my avatar is not an actual self portrait. It is an editorial comment.

I am a part time audiophile. I have no measuring equipment, and would not know how to use it if you gave me some. I'm here to sap information from folks more knowledgeable than myself.

Hello Folks! I'm a retired scientist from Florida. Wife became worried when I said I was buying an amp and speakers and encouraged me to consider headphones. So to keep the peace, I did both. Cheaped out on the speakers (Rokit5's) and splurged on headphones (Utopia).

Hi, I'm a lurker from the Los Angeles area. I've been to a couple audio meets and I like Sennheiser 600/650/800. I think the engineering is pretty thought-out and I like modding too. I have a Yggdrasil A1 . . . but I don't use it often enough. Pretty happy where I am though.

Hello folks - glad to meet you all! I live in Tempe, Arizona and just retired from ASU. I was previously a bit of wild tube roller, with too many 6SN7, 6J5G, 6F8G, ECC31 and other tubes, but I finally managed to get a grip and have slowed down a lot.
My current setup is: iMac (Audiravana) -> Schiit Eitr -> Schiit Modi Multibit -> Garage1217 Solstice -> Sennheiser HD6XX/HD800.

Hello from Austin Tx. I am a less serious hobbyist, here to appreciate a down to earth forum. I love home audio equipment, mostly love to listen to music of many varieties.

    Hi.

Just joined up, curious of this seemingly discerning community.

My name is Patrick, from Norway, an hour or so south of Oslo. I’m a casual audiophile, mostly stereo/surround stuff, and taken an even more casual approach to headphones up until recently. I’ve worn out a set of dt770 80ohm fed through a yamaha receiver via an Abrahamsen V6 dac, and upgraded this christmas to a pair of dt 1770. Naturally I feel the need for beefier electronics, and came here for info.

Greetings... I've been a member for a little while but mainly lurk, however I thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm currently in Orange County, CA. Been a fan of music all my life (mainly listening, but played piano for a while when younger) and find it to be the activity I spend most of my leisure time on. Big enthusiast of attending live music shows (smaller venues preferred over large concerts) and listening to good live recordings (hard to find though). Grew up a fan of Industrial/experimental music in my teens and 20's, still like experimental, but also like a lot of indie, instrumental, and some pop music nowadays. Basically, if its good, I'll listen regardless of the genre. I'm pretty open to trying new artists and probably spend half my listening time looking for new music of all genres from all over the world.

Naturally, people eventually want to hear the music in all its glory and details thus why I'm into this hobby (addiction?). I prefer two channel stereo but living in a condo makes that kinda hard to do without annoying neighbors. Since i'm mostly up late at nights and or working in the office, headphones have been my main source of audio reproduction. I'm looking to move into a home in the next year or two (hard to do in socal on a single income!) and will eventually get back into a proper stereo setup.

I'll always have headphones for work, listening late at night or if I just want to hear the music in a different presentation. I'm not very experienced in describing audio gear (plankton, macro-details, etc.) but I definitely know what sound I like and what gear I don't.

Right now, my main headphones (in order of preference) are:

    1. Focal Utopia (so much damn details and vocals sound so sweet. I hear things in music I never heard before. The downside is it can be a bit harsh with the wrong gear and is lite on bass though more on this later).
    2. HiFiMan Arya (I like the overall balance of sound and it has a little bit more bass at the expense of upper resolution. its also very light weight but feels cheap but it sounds good so I don't care).
    3. Sennheiser HD 600 (dark but detailed. My preference for movies and listening to slow depressing songs when I'm in the mood. Doesn't have the details and the liveliness I get from the Utopias)
    4. Shure SE846 (all time favorite IEM's. That classic Shure sound is just lovely! I listen to them on flights, in the office, when I'm working around the home, etc. The only problem is that at times my ears get sore) I hear great things about the andromeda's and will try those next.
    5. UE Reference Remastered (When I listen to vocal heavy tracks and need to keep my personal music personal - at work mainly- I turn to these. Wonderful vocals, very neutral with a touch of warmth to keep things from sounding dull and lifeless)
I've owned/still own a lot of other phones like the Denon D7000, AKG 701, M50X, etc. but they are in a drawer some where. I've heard many other highend headphones but i'm very happy and content with what I have but I'm thinking I'll pick up a pair of those Meze Empyrean headphones as they've always sounded great when I've demoed them and I can't stop thinking about them.

Dacs, I've tried a few... cheap Saber ones to betters ones like the Pavane. But in the end, I have chosen the Schitt Yggdrasil Analog 2 Gen 5 (best bang for the buck and it has a nice slight warmth). To be honest though, its so hard for me to really tell a difference between DACs that cost more than 1K (I can't tell two $200 dacs apart either now that I think of it). But I could hear a difference between a Asus Sonar DAC compared to the Yggdrasil. Even notice a difference between the Yggdrasil and the Grace/Massdrop m9XX. I'm happy with my dac but am eager to try out Schitt's new usb interface whenever it comes out.

Amps: I'm rambling at this point but I'm currently using:
    • MonoPrice Liquid Platnium (I wanted to try tube rolling and yeah, I can hear a total difference in tubes. the EH tubes are okay, the gold lions sound like ASS to me, but the Amperex 7308's are my favorite tubes I've tried so far.)
    • Violectric V281 (I love the how solid state amps really drive headphones with authority - then again, I haven't tried really high end tube amps, again, I'm kinda inexperienced.- but this amp has been very detailed, clear, but very reference like sound. Its one of those amps where I love it but kinda secretly want better but don't want to go into the effort of getting a better one (like settling for the homely girl cause she's there and she likes you but you pretend to like her back cause you're too lazy to find better and may end up regretting it later on). Anyway, I want to sell this amp.
    • Schitt Ragnarok 2 (So, no, I'm not a Schitter but it just turned out this way I swear! I bought this amp earlier this week cause i want to ease my way back into 2 channel stereo eventually but still have a good headphone option and support for vinyl if I choose to go in that direction and ruin my life financially. But man, I tell ya... I'm so happy I bought this amp. To me, again, to ME, its like the v281 with more life? Sound feels thicker(?) and the bass is more authoritative. Even the Utopias now feel like they have great bass. This amp made me like my Utopias more. The only down side is that it made them a little bit harsher sounding -probably cause solid state-but with the velour pads, they are perfect. Its only been 4 days but this amp is making me sell the v281 - i kinda have to in a way since my desk no longer has room for all these amps and dacs - so this was a bonus to me. I found my new dream amp for now anyways but i'm sure I'll always keep an ear out for better)
As you can tell I tend to ramble on and on... my spelling sucks as well but thank god for spellcheck!

Anyway, I'm mostly lurk but will probably chime in now and then.

    -Mike

    Hi SBAF (Friends, contributors, randos)

My name is Tommy from the LA/ San Fernando valley Area and I've been a lurker for sometime now, finally taking the first step to introduce myself. I've learned a lot these past few months reading through SBAF Resource page (SBAF Audio Glossary, Affordable tube amp guide, Schiit Headamp compendium, etc) and various threads pertaining to Headphone or headphone amps. I'm grateful for this site's existence and all the members that have contributed to creating a hub of information for headphones, DACs, amps, and everything related.

Funny enough, I actually found out about this hobby after watching Jude's video about the 6XX (lol), when I thought about spending some money on a nice pair of...Beats or Bose (I KNOW I KNOW )

Anyway, I was first told by the r/headphones community that "SBAF = cult!!!" along with other common phrases such as "All DACs sound the same" "You shouldn't spend more than $100 on a headphone amp" etc etc.

After graduating college and finding a real job, I started expanding my price range for better headphones. I had the Focal Clear that I loved at the time and I was originally saving up for a used Utopia and call it quits, until somehow I found out about the ZMF Verite. I've never seen such a beautiful headphone... but it has to sound good too right ? :) After emailing Zach, he told me at the time, only Upscale Audio had a Verite for auditioning near my area. I had a blast auditioning the Verite and I had a pleasant conversation with Evan from Upscale Audio who told me to check out SBAF. After checking out the site for myself, I realized the community is not what people from reddit deemed it to be.

I realized I have A LOT to learn from this site, so I started skimming through different threads that I was interested in when I was on the bus to work or on days when work was not that hectic.

After reading Marvey's DAC Chart of Awesomeness, I saw a lot of the Schiit DACs categorized as "great value" so I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I purchased a Schiit Gungnir DS version and I was blown away by the differences I heard compared to my Grace m9xx. I first thought it was just placebo so I asked my roommate who has no experience with audio equipments and we were A/Bing them. First thing he said was "Oh wow this one sounds wider"

Next was tube amps. I see a lot of people writing off tube amps as distortion making machines and only good for the aesthetics, but I personally loved the sound of Bottlehead Crack + SB with my HD6XX. the ZDS was often praised when I was reading through different threads and I just happened to see a sales post for ZDS so I quickly snagged it. I was blown away by this amp. "WTF HD6XX sounds wide?!?!?!!"

So yeah, I ended up investing a lot more funds into this hobby after hearing the differences, but I'm grateful for this community steering me in the right direction.

Apart from that, I received a lot of help from @AudioFriend and @Zampotech when I was trying to mod the ZDT Jr. and I hope to give back to the community whenever I can! (Thank you for helping me even though I was just a rando)

TL;DR - I learned and received a lot of helped from SBAF, so I hope I can be of any help to those who need it.

Hope you all have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

    Best,
    Tommy

Hello fellow old duffers. As I started reading posts, the word "retired" was used quite a bit. I am 71 and live in Raleigh, NC, I am not retired yet. I have been into Audio since 1968. Presently more into headphones than a speaker system. Although I do not use my Cary/Merlin /Rega system, I have no interest in selling it. I have sold too many systems and turned around in six months and started over.
It has taken me since December to get this forum to send me a confirmation Email. As such, no one could be more happy to be here. As you can see from my avatar, I am a Donald North Audio customer and a tube guy.
