    Hi.

Just discovered the forum. Back into the audio hobby after a lapse of many years. In my mid-50s and struggling with the reality of diminished hearing ability and tinnitus after a lifetime of listening too much and too loud. Worked on the air in radio for years, with either headphones or speakers always on, and no doubt damaged my hearing (along with the usual loss that occurs with age). It sucks to lose this ability when one loves music and great sound! Nonetheless, I recently set up my old equipment, which I hadn't used seriously for a long time, and have enjoyed many hours of listening, and the fun of tweaking and making improvements.

My stuff is old (like me) and entry level, but still works well and sounds quite good:

    Mission Cyrus 782 Speakers
    McIntosh C15 Preamp
    Adcom GFA-555 Amp
Technics SL-1100A Turntable with Sumiko Pearl Cartridge
Samsung (crappy) Disc Player (as transport) into Audio Alchemy Digital Decoding Engine 1.0

Most of that is at least 25 years old. Anybody here remember this stuff?!

I lost count years ago, but I have 6 or 7 thousand CDs and 5 or 6 hundred albums. Lots of jazz (that's the radio format I used to work in), but lots of funk, soul, pop, rock, bluegrass, classical, electronica and on and on.

Anyways, thanks for the forum. I'm enjoying poking around and learning.

    Hello,

I've started browsing headphone/audio forums roughly 4 years ago - that's when my unhealthy passion for not just music, but also headphone gear started. I've been pretty active on native forums until about a year ago - so this is a bit of a comeback, although international.

About 2 years ago a few of the more experienced members of polish forums have recommended me SBAF - a place where not every DAC is a KILLER in its price range and headphones have actual flaws. At the time I couldn't register, but I have been browsing the forum. I'm mostly interested in unbiased and unfiltered opinions - the measurements on the other hand are interesting, but never decisive for me. The most important thing about the SBAF though are the "rules" - they basically tell us what type of people SBAF attracts. I've always wanted to be a part of the community that can be honest, trustworthy, but at the same time can disagree in a healthy way.

Throughout my life I've had fascinations with different genres - it started with rap then electronic music, rock, metal, blues and a bit of jazz and currently I'm in love with classical. That being said I still listen to all of the aformentioned, mostly based on my mood or the activity - metal and rock for workout, classical and blues to relax and electronic ... or even pop when i'm on the move.
To throw a few names: Avatar, Eminem, System of a Down, Glitch Mob, BB King, Eric Clapton, Rachmaninoff(mostly concertos), Chopin, Dvorak.

I've never owned a speaker system - after a traumatic time in a flat where I could hear my neighbours waking up or watching TV, I simply can't listen to music in such a way. That's why I'm stuck with headphones. I've owned a few interesting cans, my favourites being LFF Code 6, normal HE-6, 007mk1, Kennerton Odin, Ether Flow and DT-R10 by Michauczok.
Right now I don't even own a DAC ( I'm taking my sweet time ), but I still own Audio-GD HE-9, modded wooden HE-6 and I've recently ordered Sendy Aivas out of curiosity.

I'm sure I won't be too vocal, as at this point I have neither the knowledge nor the gear to write something reasonable. That being said I might ask a few questions here and there just to widen the horizons. I'll certainly keep reading though.

Hey all, just here to enjoy myself, learn some new things, and share what little I know.
Now, I will leave ya with a quote from one of my favorite writers; "Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience."
Cheers, looking forward to meeting any and everyone....

Hello all. Here because HF is, well, pretty unbearable. My background is electrical engineering, I currently use an all ATC main system, building a few of speakers for H.T and party systems (think cheap powerful amps, crap sources and high SPL), I rarely listen to headphones but when I do I prefer Sennies, and seem to dig a lot of the DACs you guys like. Theres a lot of DAC experience here and I enjoy reading it!

Hey, all. Glad to be here.

I'm primarily a two-channel guy, but I moved from a house with no neighbors to an apartment in the city, and from an office with a door to an open-plan office, so now I'm a daily user of headphones that used to get pulled out only a few times a year.

When I worked in high-end audio I had a constantly changing array of equipment -- mostly because the feast-or-famine manufacturers in that industry couldn't always afford to pay their bills with cash -- but over the last decade my headphone setup's been pretty static:

    Home
Headphones -- HD800 with OEM cable (modded with a nasty Kapton-tape insulation repair), SDR mod later this week
DAC/Amp -- Headroom Desktop with Max Module, Max DAC, stepped attenuator, Desktop power supply
Digital sources -- Squeezebox and CD player; Audio Alchemy DDE 3.0 for input switching and HDCD decoding

    Work
Headphones -- OG HifiMan RE-0, or HD580 with HD650 cable/grilles when open backs won't bother anyone
    DAC/Amp -- AudioQuest Dragonfly
Digital source -- Linux workstation or Macbook Pro or whatever

    Portable
    N/A, I don't do that

Found SBAF while looking for HD800-compatible cable connectors or prebuilt replacement cables. That was about two weeks ago, and I still don't have a new cable. Instead, I have an SDR coming from France and a request in to Bill-P for photos to accompany his HD800 screen-removal post, and I'm trying to decide whether to replace my headphone sockets with mini-XLR4 connectors. Sigh.

Retired communications engineer, hardware, software, radio, audio, station, studio, stuff. Higher-end audio for 40+ years, purely as enthusiast.

Nowadays, Schiit, Senn, Audeze, Hifiman, and music all the time, classical to metal.

Imma just do a short re-intro because I've been largely lurking for the last few years... Just haven't had any pressing questions! I'm surprised my account didn't get nuked tbh. IT worker/student from Puerto Rico here, a few years ago I took a chance on the HD 600 (coming from Beyers/X2) and then started looking for a tube amp on a whim, hoo boy.

At the time I asked way too many questions and received some really useful answers... You've totally failed to live up to your asshat reputations, sorry. I'm glad I asked those questions tho, having had the chance to try some of the gear I asked about over time, I've realized just how many pointless side-grades I've avoided.

PC gaming and photography are amongst my hobbies. That's all I've got for now... Hola!

    Hello everyone,

I'm an off/on-again music enthusiast who played guitar for 20+ years, gave it up, and formed subjective opinions on lots of music. Also sold mid to high-end audio (from Adcom to Bryston to Levinson) a couple of decades ago while going to college and formally got educated/addicted to audio at that time. Also starved for a living during that time.

While I still have some SS and tube gear from those days, I'm now devoted to headphone gear for ease of use. I'm still learning how to appreciate music, and still looking for the next tweak or improvement that I might never notice.

    Current Gear:
Headphones: Sennheiser HD700 with that foam mod that doesn't really work, unmodded Sennheiser/Massdrop HD6xx, Monoprice M560
Headphone Amp/DAC: Monolith THX AAA 788 (using amp only), possibly upgrading to Schiit Mjolnir 2 but looking at Rag 2.
    DAC: Yggdrasil A2, Modi MB
Transport: rPi v4B w/ Allo Digione non-Sig, and a PC
Tuners: Nakamichi ST-7, and that modded Sony tuner that no one can find anymore
Stream Sources: Qobuz, Spotify, Google Play Music

When do I listen to music? Always, since I work from home.

    Nice to meet you all.

AHOY THERE MATIES... WARM GREETINGS FROM NEW ZEALAND!
    \/

I joined some weeks back - but broke the house rules by posting a question BEFORE READING THE INTRO RULES! I know, I know... A shameful deed. No doubt, I will need to be soundly whipped for my transgressions!
I’ve been an audiophile for decades and - like many of us - own far too much audio gear. Everything from LEBEN tubed confectionery from Japan to a quite rare LUXMAN LUXKIT Z501 solid state amp. We still LOVE our NAD3020 and we are currently quite enamoured with our tiny CREEK4040s3. I also recently picked up a pair of very rare MENTMORE (Subsequently known as PAPWORTH) M200 Tubed Monoblocks in stunning condition, but they are in need of a bit of technical repair. A story for another day, perhaps?
We own several great speakers including BLUMENSTEIN ORCA single-driver widebanders, MAGNAT All Ribbon weapons (With no ribbons at all, lol), CELESTION DITTON 250 and the inimitable KLIPSCH RP160M high efficiency marvels. Love ‘me all! Recently, I did a restoration project on an original pair of REGA KYTE speakers. (Sing out if you’d like me to post the pictorial journey here...) I have to say that the results exceeded all our expectations and matched with the CREEK, this is one of the most satisfying amp/speaker combinations that we have ever concocted. Partnership is everything... right? I must say that our MONITOR AUDIO R252 speakers also excellent sound, driven by the 40W CREEK.
When the moment calls for it, I occasionally don my ageing pair of SENNHEISER HD449 Headphones. Very good sound, but the ear-cushions are crumbling like black, mouldy cheese. A bit disappointing.
As my handle suggests, my wife and I are vinyl LP collectors and run a highly modified LINN LP12/ITTOK LVII with ORIGIN LIVE ADVANCED DC MOTOR KIT and (beloved) SHELTER 501/2 MC cartridge. Sonically, the LINN really responds to the right improvements, particularly around gaining increased focus and accuracy, without losing that sumptuous mid-bass warmth (Of course!).
But we are not all analog, as much of the music we love is just not available on (worthwhile) vinyl LPs. So, we run lossless (so they call it) Apple ALAC files from iTunes - ripped from CDs - played via our huge iPAD. This, in conjunction with streaming from the likes of SPOTIFY, NETFLIX, YOUTUBE and others, keeps us well entertained. All of this digital music datastream finds its way through to our trusty HRT iSTREAMER DAC where it is entirely reclocked and massaged into stunning analog - ready to be amplified. The quality goes head-to-head with out REGA APOLLO ANNIVERSARY EDITION CD-Player with its internal WOLFSON DAC. (Amazing!)
One of my other passions is repairing amps and speakers. Still learning and loving every minute of it.
Anyways, that's a bit about me. Looking forward to some great exchanges with you all.
Rich blessings from Auckland 1051, New Zealand.

I just posted for the first time here.
Whoops, except I've posted on the old site a few times.
My gear's listed under my profile at the other place.

    Hello there

Joined in 2016 with the intention to check on that "other" forum. Have been hooked and lurking ever since but never took the step to post anything. Even now I'm not sure I can contribute much, as the hobby has somewhat taken a step back due to other part of life catching up. Nevertheless for some reason I decided to finally introduce myself here.

My journey in hi-fi started with the SH forums some 15 years ago. Since then I've changed a dozens of headphones, several dacs/amps, portable players, hundreds of CDs, etc. until I settled on my the current setup of Fiio X3ii + EarSonics Velvet for portable, and Jotun + Bifros + HD600 for desktop. Just recently I bought the Focal Clear - a decent upgrade over the HD600, also lighting up again the audiophile spark.

So yeah, that's where I am now. Thanks for all the knowledge shared here, hope I will also be able to contribute somewhat :)

    Hi everyone,

First of all, thanks for putting the forum together and keeping this awesome resource going! I joined the forum based on some of the great posts I read, and liking the philosophy behind SBAF.

My hi-fi tastes are probably going to get me laughed right out of the forum (or maybe not :)), as I listen to music through my old pair of Grado s80. I came back to Grado after many years of searching for the perfect pair of headphones, realizing that the ones I've had all along sounded just fine. But, don't write me off just yet - a few more weeks of reading the forum and I might resume the search.

I was surprised my account is still active. I visit this site whenever I am interested in some special gears. I have been a audiophile for a little bit over 20 years. My first dream headphone is the hd-580. But then the hd-600 was introduced. Nice to meet everyone here.
