    Thanks!

HIFiBuyGuy gets credit for the audio rack idea...he just joined the forum as well. He's been building racks out of threaded rod and retail store display shelves...cutting boards...whatever he can find that makes sense...for years. I took his idea and tweaked it a bit. I might even add one more shelf...because I'm out of space - but my quest is not over!

Hello guys, I'm new here. I do understand that culture and I appreciate to be here.
I also wrote Garuspik for his handmaded Verums.
The Leader Purr1n was pretty excited about these headphones.
Actually I'm 19 years old, but I hope this won't be something to deal with.

Hi all, on-and-off lurker living in Singapore. Mostly enjoy 2 channel.
Here's my setup: PC with ambiophonics DSP → COS Engineering H1 DAC+pre- → NuForce STA200 amp → Audience Ones speakers & Adam Sub7. Smaller speakers and setup since it is used in the bedroom.

Also own Tecsun HP-300 chi-fi headphone, Topping D50 (trying to get rid of it), Schiit Modi Multibit, and an assortment of tweaks bordering on voodooism (yes yes I know, but tweaks are fun for me).

Likes measurements as much as subjective listening opinions. And in the midst of slowly building gainclone and F5T (I may complete them someday).

Looking forward to more fun and sarcastic giggles here.

Hello from HK. Seems I might fit the bill as I tend to do a lot of reading and lurking before posting, if at all. Also trying to follow the advice or instructions given to new members, but after getting diverted a few too many times through the stickies, am just going to get to it. If I am meant to stay, hopefully not step on too many toes and avoid the boot, I should be fine if I missed a sticky or two.

Due to various reasons, I have spent a great deal more time doing general reading and listening to music recently. Landed here on my quest to find an IEM that suited me, when it really just started out as a simple search to replace broken earphones. Currently enjoying the Sony IER-Z1R playing through a Sony ZX300A.

    Thanks for having me.

Pointlessly joining this forum mainly for the same reasons I joined the defunct one—concern for truth and sharing of useful information. Also planning to dig into measurements and maybe share some of the mods done on my GMPs. Purely egotistical motives as usual.

Hi, joining because I like the general attitude on the forum.
I’ve been in and out of HIFI for 30 years, recently getting back in interested in headphones, since it’s all I can practically listen to these days. Interested in measurements as much for their limitations as their impartiality.

Long time lurker for quite some time, and after picking up a pair of HD-800s, looking forward to more learning on upgrading the other parts of the chain, especially the amp. After recently focusing on the Music portion of the forum, I decided to join, as there are some excellent recommendations that I've enjoyed.

    Hi
I am a long time lurker and I do like the mentality here, I can finally trash a gear without the fear of getting witch hunted because I hurt some little girl's feelings.

I do appreciate resolution and macro dynamics more than anything else :). Also EQ rule!.

Hi, I’ve been lurking SBAF for a while, as a source of subjective impressions on source gear. Been into personal audio, especially IEMs, for a while, and I’ve been around the block and tried most of the stuff on the market. I like my gear to have tactile slam, big dynamics, subbass rumble and high detail retrieval.

Hello. I'm a guy from NZ. I have lurked here for years, and I don't intend to do any much more than that, but stuff happening today makes me think sign-ups might close again pretty soon.

I'm not big in to speakers or headphones. I was an IEM geek on head-fi for too long, and have far more than is reasonable, including a few that cost vastly more than is reasonable that I really need to sell. I do have the Andros for reference, and they're undeniably great though I don't use them all that often. I don't have any of the fotm stuff from the last year or so; for my money, the FLC8 N and D through ZX300 (balanced) and Hiby R3 respectively is all I really want.

My main reason to sign up is to eventually ask some questions about what I should get to give my Aeolus the source and amp that Zachs work deserves. MCTH is pretty nice to be fair.

    Hi All,

New here. From Manila. I signed up because I find the impressions of gear here interesting and quite OCD! (and not limited to measurements, though that too has its merits).

I've only recently ventured into Hifi and listen most on Speakers (Dali Opticon 2, Onkyo 9150 Integrated Amp)

I started with portable gear (IEMs, DAPs) and throughout the years eventually graduated into Stereo which I found to be the most fun. Recently, I upgraded from a Wharfedale to Kef speakers to Dali Speakers and have been very happy with the result that I no longer plan to upgrade anytime soon.

Now that I had the speakers and amp set, I started trying out various DACs. I started with the Fiio E10, Audioquest Dragonfly, Topping D30 and finally was able to source a Modi 3 (Schiit gear is hard to purchase from my country). The Modi 3 was a much better than the d30 for me (despite costing less) and this sparked by interest to try the Modi Multibit.

I now have the Modi Multibit and wanted to join this group since lots of discussion about this dac are available.

    Hey all...

I've been lurking and decided to create an account and contribute (not that I will be able too...). A little about me:

    • I live Cary, NC
    • I've been into audio equipment my whole life
    • I fall in and out of being a music fan (probably depends on what my system sounds like at the time)
    • I'm typically more of a Jazz fan; however, I occasionally listen to rock when the spirit hits me
Being that Cary Audio is in my home town, I'm very familiar with there starting. In fact, at one point in my life, I worked for Cary Audio. I even travelled to CES with Cary Audio. I've owned it all (well, mostly...): Audio Research, Conrad Johnson, Macintosh, Quicksilvers, Celestion, Magnepan, Acoustat, Sota and...

Currently, I've moved almost exclusively to streaming with Tidal. My system consist of an older MacBook Pro -> Schiit Modi 3 -> inexpensive Kenwood receiver from the 90's -> ADS L780's. I do have a JVC QL-Y66F turntable (I'm into convenience these days) and a Macintosh CD player just sitting waiting for a new system to play them through. I do have a Sansui 9090DB waiting to get serviced.

I'm intrigued by the Schiit line and I'm looking into some combo preamp - amp with them. Always looking for suggestions and getting myself familiar with todays technology as time has passed me by...

Been there lurking from quite some time now, having registered two years ago, but never introduced myself there, my bad!
Interested in iem and headphones talks, I consider myself an open-minded guy.
Outside of audio, I like to discuss with people about any subject and I'm particularly curious about whatever stuff which I don't know.
    Ciao!

    Hi All,

I've enjoyed the bit of lurking I've done here so far. Hopefully I've read enough posts & stickies to not step too far out of line when I do post in a thread.

I'll be honest upfront that I do consider myself a bit of a Schiit fanboy. This is mostly because I'm trying to get the most bang for my buck as I start off on this hobby. I figure if I don't let my taste get too expensive too quickly I'll be better off in the long run, and my ears have been pretty happy so far! I also do tend more toward speaker listening as well, so I realize I may be in the minority here, but very much enjoy a good headphone session.

Current home setup is a Bifrost 2, Saga S, Lyr 3 w phono card, Mani for digitizing vinyl, Loki mini, Yamaha M-35, Pinnacle speakers, Grado SR225i, AT ATH-M50RD. For the Lyr 3 I have a LISST, Ken Rad VT231, Sylvania 6sn7gta, and a few others.

Work rig is a Modi Multibit w Wyrd, a Sys, and a Vali 2, usually with a LISST to save the lifespan of my Bugle Boy.

First product I bought was the Modi Multibit, and I actually teared up a bit when I heard it. Kind of reminded me of the Sony CD player I grew up with, which was multibit. At the time I had been doing my digital listening on an airport express up until that point and hadn't realized how crappy it was until that moment. Been upgrading ever since!

    Thanks for opening up registrations!

Hi, my name is Alchemy and I'm super duper excited to be here!

I got wise about what actual audio quality was when I received a pair of HD650's, and more-so when I got the equipment to drive them properly. As of now I run them through an HPA4BL and sometimes a Crackatwoa (which is fed by the HPA4). I've poured most of my effort into messing with my Bottlehead stuff so I can lick and suck as much gooey music out of my 650's as I can. Other than that I have a few other things like hybrid tube amps and some more Sennheiser stuff (HD280 pro, CX200). I am very interested in the Van Waarde OTL design as it has been replicated in a good deal of commercial amplifiers.

I'm into engineering in general. I'm a CompSci student and I learn what I can about electronics on my own. This forum so far has been awesome because as far as I can tell the quality of a person and what they post seems really good.

Hello! I'm David, and I'm joining these forums after looking around a lot of different places, and deciding that I like the culture here the most. People seem genuinely friendly here, and I'm sure that I have a lot to learn. I recently upgraded to my first pair of higher-tier headphones (Focal Elex) and I've been really enjoying them with a JDS Atom and Topping D10. Look forward to chatting with y'all!!

    Hello all!

I am a long time lurker and figured I would finally make an account and introduce myself.

I have always found SBAF to be quite a solid resource for getting impressions, measurements and lots of information in general. I appreciate all the data you can find here as its hard to get solid info that isnt clearly biased or suspect in some way.

I am an American but I moved to Japan 5 years ago. I got into the headphone hobby right after moving to Japan and it has drained my wallet ever since. I have been in midfi hell forever and at this point tried way too many cheaper dac/amps/headphones. I recently sold basically everything and have settled down with a Hifiman HE5se and got a Asgard 3/Modi on the way that I hope to be happy with!

My favorite headphones of all time (soundwise!) are the Onkyo A800 and I think the DAC/Amp I enjoyed the most was the Burson Playmate. My least favorite headphones were the Fostex T-X0( sorry if you like them I really really didnt!)

I mostly listen to rock and metal, but at times listen to nearly every genre. Love video games as well but dont have as much time to play em anymore sadly.

Look forward to actually interacting with everyone instead of staring creepily from the corner!

Long time no see. I would like to reintroduce myself.

After a long time of me not posting, occasionally lurking, cutting out habitual inhalation of herb smoke, moving on to hard stuff, actually enjoying audio, getting into ("vintage") speakers and spending a lot of hours experimenting with speaker placement, bed sheet, blanket and pillow room treatment, I feel confident about slooowly posting again... Whenever I get the inspiration to recollect a high SNR post mortem of my experience, along with pics or didn't happen.

    Currently employed system:
BlackShark 2 - {EDIT: - HibyMusic app - exclusive USB output} OTG - wyrd - wyrd - eitr - modimultibit (- sometimes Valhalla 2 as pre) - PioneerA445 - wtf are those simple, beautiful, two way sealed teak wood, blue cloth on the fron speakers got for 60 euro, branded B&O "Type: S" "hojater HT42" 6202-5" 3-5Ohm that barely bring up google search results, apart from, like, two for sale listings, which are now gone and contained, from memory, descriptors such as "10-15W" and "-3dB at 50Hz"?

Anyone heard of these at all? They sound sublime. Honky, lean, closed in, smeared stage no matter how I set them up (probably in part due to the 50ish year old age, I mean, crossovers, capacitors and stuff, mechanical wear and tear, moisture, idk)... Yes, terrible, yet absolutely sublime, I joke not. Weak, tight bass, magical, lush mids and very pleasant, non-fatiguing highs. Whenever I get around to posting more, I will research good ways of posting photos to SBAF and include a bunch.

Reminder, I adore HD600. I've always been a sucker for forward mids.

ATL HD310i... Impressive at first, boring AF after a short while. One time I got angry and botched one of the mid drivers, they have been in storage for months since then. One day I will use them as subs.

Also I intend to share my limited success in my on and off struggle to digitally restore dynamic range in a recording. I only managed to get somewhere with Re:Zero soundtrack, and I am proud of the result. I believe bonus CD1 and all the OP/ED/Original(from-some-band-and-not-the-main-composer) tracks have a simple, non-multi-band-nonsense final compressor applied to the whole mix. After many tries, the results of the following process IME magically clicked with all of the aforementioned songs:

    In GoldWave,
    Start with a good quality blurayyarr collection (coughahemnyaasneezecough);
    Lower volume by 6.02dB
    Compressor
    Threshold -12.04dB
    Multiplier +6.02dB
    Attack/Release 500ms/500ms
    No "anticipate attack"
    No "use smoother"
    No "process channels independently"
Save as 24bit wave, No sample rate change

Funny, I found Bonus CD1 in 44.1/16 mp3, later in 44.1/and16 flac and finally in 96/24 flac as part of a bluray mega collection thing. I have not compared extensively, but I feel like it's not a fake 96/24, it's that much airier, lingering and generally effortless. The rest is all 44.1/16 flac.

Interrogative. I intend to post this here above-standing "restoring dynamic range" part in the recordings session AND provide original + modified track files, is that OK at all and how might I go about it, Google Drive rar archives?

BTW I would like to disclose that I visited Alex Peychev of APLhifi in spring 2018, he had invited my family, my parents were his veterinaries of choice. He is 5mi away from me. His home setup, wow.

I am in no way affiliated to anything or anyone whatsoever.

League of Legends is a disgusting game, I finally quit that shit for good months ago, I could not get any worthwhile pleasure out of it for two years now. CSGO is a real game.

    I love you all!
