Rando lurker here, hoping to at least establish some presence, though most of my browsing these days is on other not-to-be-named forums. My main draw towards SBAF is because I've been an owner of an amazing Eddie Current Studio Jr 300B since Dec 2020. Read through all of the posts about the Studio Jr, Aficionado, and Studio B, and truly appreciate the wealth of knowledge from the long-time members here. Since then, I've branched out a bit reading on other equipment as well, particularly the Pi2AES thread. Hoping to one day own a similar streamer for my setup!

Hi, I'm Juan and am both tone deaf and addicted to the good sound of good music. Started buying non standard issued audio crap less than a decade ago, mostly Schiit ($). I've grown out of classic rock a bit and grown into classical/jazz/americana, could be I'm just getting old. mostly switched over from the overly polite headfi, probably because i tend to associate polite in this industry with sucking up, but what can i do, call me cynical. probably have other things to mention, but who remembers...

    Hi
I'm Charles, from France. Been a long time lurker here before signing up. I'm mostly invested in iems but i'm in the process of building (again) a headphone setup.
I already have the cans: Utopia & Stellia
I have placed an order on the Studio B - but still checking what other pieces of the puzzle i will add.

    Anyway, hello @MrButchi

    Hello

I am Crow, a bird that regularly migrates between Seoul and Georgia every couple of months

I have been silently reading this forum for quite sometime, and I am really grateful to members of SBAF who has helped me making an informed gear purchase through their impressions

I hope can contribute something back.

Hey everyone. Just joining after lurking for quite some time, hope to give some feedback now that I've hit my point where I don't feel upgrading is "necessary." Lol. See signature for setup. But then again, I'm also here to learn and maybe squeeze out some of the last bits of my chain, maybe finding quality I never expected.

Hi everyone, longtime lurker here from India. I am mostly interested in DIY of things, and currently in between setup due to impending move. Right now using HD800 and modded YH100 with an OTL amp based on 6SL7/6AS7 with low OI. Looking forward to learn and share more on audio esp. on 2 channel front.

There goes the neighborhood :p !! To all who care, @uniqusrname is an awesome DIYer and I've had the privilege of knowing him for over 3 years now. I have used (and continue to use) some of his products and they are very well made. Welcome.

    Hi guys

I'm an old timer from the diy scene, mostly on hf and hc. I haven't been in the headphone community for a few years as interest in truly diy projects fell and newer projects became very specific while low budget "just because its fun" was replaced by cheap Chinese eBay offerings that offered better value.

Nothing against Chinese amps on eBay, and especially DACs, especially considering that I love AudioGD products and currently use the NFB-12 at home.

There simply came a point at which I realized that I could not build something at a lower cost in parts than buying a similar product. Sad day.

Anyways, just yesterday, I got an email from a truly wonderful person I met years ago and will always consider a dear friend, Whitney. He pointed me to this site and suggested I say hi.

    Hi

I hope to spend some time here and get to know you guys. Looking forward to it.

Welcome @Fallenangel ! So glad you signed up.

For those who don’t know him from head-fi back in the day, Fallenangel (Pavel) is one of the most brilliant amp builders out there. He built the magical SOHA1 that I’m constantly bragging about which has beat every amp I’ve had here in house. It somehow sounds equal to a First Watt Aleph J speaker amp with the HE6SE. That should not be even physically possible. A true artist.

Also a very good guy and friend of mine for years. Hopefully we can pull him back in and he’ll build some cool stuff to show off.

Pavel is also responsible for the multiple PPAS portable amps that members here have won at meet raffles. Best portable amp I’ve ever heard.

    cheers mate!

Welcome! I was just thinking about you the other day; I saw some ooooooold posts of yours in the Soekris dam1021 thread on diyaudio.

I hear that, I recently returned after many many years away, and was really depressed at the state of DIY. I'm still finding ways to live in nostalgia, but you're spot on about how expensive it is......

@Fallenangel Holy crap, there's a name I haven't seen in a long time! Now all we need is Avro_Arrow for a Canadian headfi diy reunion...

Was going to comment and like individually for a lot of the intros but there are too many intriguing new member posts in the last several pages.

Hopefully a very good sign for the future of SBAF

Aww, thanks guys, feeling all warm and fuzzy (inside joke as some friends call me fuzzy because I buzz my hair short and it feels fuzzy to touch).

I'm very happy you enjoy the SOHA @rhythmdevils just don't change tubes from original unless you are ready to get out a DMM and set the bias for the new tube. I looked around for documentation but couldn't find it easily. Maybe another person has saved a copy. I could probably get in touch with Alex, the original designer and ask, but you know how much of a shitshow the project was. After Alex posted an early schematic, some guy started making boards before it was done and I think Alex got upset. The rest of the community looked at boards available but design stalled. I remember posting a schematic using a simple diamond buffer with bc327/bc337 and getting a text. Yeah, it was that nasty. Such a shame.

The SOHA 2 was much smoother, but it all left a bad taste in my mouth, as I'm sure it did with Alex. Long story short, an inexperienced and disrespectful person tried to profit by making boards before the project was ready, pissed off the designer, essentially killed community input in the project before it was ready.

It managed to survive through the community and Alex's good will. JISBOS was created to fit the board as a good buffer and amb helped sell boards.

The PPAS was a beautiful, though power hungry project that didn't go far, I think because it didn't fit a case easily. I had no problem making crazy diy solutions, sometimes fitting 8x AAA batteries in a Hammond case with an lm317 charger on perf board. Fun times!

Anyways, glad to be here and I appreciate the warm welcome.

That's a name I know and haven't heard in ages. It's been so long that I don't remember if you made it to one of my meets. Double edged sword - I hope you did and we hung out, but then I sound like a fool for forgetting. :)

Your name sounds familiar, hi again.

I remember that DAC. I built a couple. Fun project, a little weird, but fun.

There was a capacitor mod and complex wiring if I recall correctly.

Oh shoot! Forgot to post here first...
    umm.. hi?

My occupation tag says it all. I work QC for industrial electronics as a day-job, trying to branch out into programming (started with Java, kinda late for the party on that programming language what with Kotlin trying to muscle in on its turf)
I'm a compulsive tinkerer at heart. Been that way as far back as I can remember. I modded my cheap Chinese XLR mic with a voltage divider and larger voltage rating capacitors in line with the signal path, my AE-5 sound card with better, hand-matched hFE rating transistors for the push-pull NPN+PNP headphone amp circuit, twice because i ruined the first AE-5 board by shorting one of those transistor gates to ground; even solder modded my 1080-ti Nvidia GPU with 10-ohm resistors on top of the caps surrounding the power-regulator chip which tricks it into never power-throttling. Again, second try there, because i ruined my first 1080-ti by knocking off a sandgrain-sized tantalum cap next to one of the memory chips then had the bright idea to just solder-short that path... which fried the memory controller ...it was a much nicer Xtreme edition board from Gigabyte too, where-as this one's a stock reference board that's 3rd party ._.)
Still gets better clock speeds somehow tho, which is weird seeing as it doesn't have two 8-pin power connectors, just 6+8, but it was oven-baked to bring it back to life after it failed on me, so that might be why.
It's using a aftermarket Morpheus II cooler with liquid metal paste on the GPU chip plus a whole slew of other heatsinks all over it, especially the memory chips which have their own copper ones attached with Arctic Silver thermal adhesive.

Umm, back to audio I guess.
I own the Fostex modding meme planar headphones, now with upgraded headband padding AND an elastic strap screwed in with a seatbelt cover slapped on top for extra weight distribution (i can basically headbang to metal with these on and they won't even budge lol)
Acoustically they have the following upgrades:
-3d-printed phasor plates on the front and lead strips in the back of the baffles, which have the paper removed to unleash the bass-beast.
-Dekoni Elite Velour pads (TH900 model) which don't dull the bass as much as the previous cheap non-angled chinese velour pads i was using, but still have the benefit of extra breathability and super-clear highs from the easier forward excursion on the driver membrane and no leathery pad-bounce distortions.

These however have been superseded in clarity by the Hifiman 400SE pair I modded with 3mm self-adhesive round decorative lead strips (the kind used on windows) applied to each of the 28 (really fragile) magnetite bars that make up the driver front and back.
The bass still doesn't have the same force as the Fostex, but the soundstage is wider and has better detail retrieval thanks to the larger and lighter membrane.

...I guess that's about it as far as presentations go.
Oh yea, guess I'm also modding the internal chemistry of my own body to fight off dysphoria, but that's outside the scope of this forum so I'll refrain from elaborating.
