Hi. My name is Michael Shaw. I will lurk unless I can speak about something with authority. That means I’ll post pretty much nothing at all.

    Hello everyone,

I have been lurking for a loooong time and understood the culture around here. I have been thinking to post self introduction but hasn't really got time. Well here I am, my first post :)

In the earlier days, I hang out in HF like everybody else, but more and more I trust sbaf impression better.
HF have just too many, time wasters, rubbish, noise, manufacturer (I think) pretending to be member posts without baseline comparison whatsoever! How can anyone make mental picture without comparison? that's just poppycock.

I am multiple gear kind of guy. I don't believe one gear rules them all as I tend to get tired with one gear signature after awhile, I buy and sold gear in the beginning of my audio 'career' only to regret and missed the gear that I have sold eg. Darkvoice THA 337, Graham Slee Solo SRG II. So the solution is to have multiple amps and headphones and rotate it subject to my mood.

I am listening to TV series (or movies) 95% of the time because I am irritated to listen to the same song over and again. The remaining 5% are about everything really but maybe mainly listening to Female vocal jazz to k-pop, pop, classical and hip-hop, to a lesser extend, so please take that into consideration on my comments or impressions.

I prefer headphones far more than IEMs for the sound signature and comfort but I still have some ancient IEM from the earlier personal audio times, Shure SE530, Senn IE8, Westone (forgot the model), AT CK100.
I also prefer headphones than speakers due to the intimacy and better detail, beats me! :)

I have 'samples' of dynamic, estat and planar headphones. I like dynamic sounds the most, followed by estat then planar, primarily because of dynamic's seductive tone, wide soundstage and plenty of amp design/tubes combination to alter/tweak the sound; then e-stat for the sheer effortless speed! then planar.
Planar is okay I guess, just that I don't really like the smaller soundstage and its neck breaking weight.

I have collections of amps with different topologies:
    2x solid states
    2x hybrids
2x OTLs one with 6AS7 and the other 6C33C-B design
    3x OPTs one with EL84, 6L6 and 2A3 topology
2x stats, one Koss ESP950 and entry level Stax

That's pretty much summing it up about me.

@Admin, thank you for having me in the family!

    Helo All,Im new on here
My first audio system consisted of a Garrad turntable,Fisher TX100 amp and AR 2ax speakers. By the early 70s, I was DIYing amplifiers and speakers. I stopped in the mid-90s as I got old and carrying 30kg power amps and 60kg speakers got tiring.

    Hi Everyone,

Long time lurker. I avoided headphones due to tinnitus. Decided to try to get into them by listening in short periods of time. Bought Lcd-x (newest 2021 vs) and have been on the hunt for dac and amp. I like the vibe here, thanks for allowing me on.

    hi there,

i am *very* new to all of this but i have (in my typical style, for better or worse) jumped in with both feet (which often includes jumping the gun on various things).

at this point i cannot see myself offering my own impressions of much of anything but plan to use the bejeezus out of the collective wisdom here.

i have a very specific question which i will post on what i hope is the correct thread, but as requested / required, i am offering this introduction.

for whatever it is worth (i assume it will be very important in order to get informed advice) here is my setup (and proposed/possible further options):

    vinyl:
    - rega brio r
    - rega planar 6 w/ exact
    - b&w 606 s2 anniversary edition

    ear-related:
    - shure se315 iem (old (obviously))
    - sony wf-1000xm4 wireless anc earbuds
    - focal clear headphones
    - audioquest dragonfly cobalt portable dac/headphone amp

purchasing in the near future and would appreciate input:
    - headphone amp for home
    - dac for home
    - interconnects
    - usb cable

i hope i didn't screw up my introduction. i look forward to communicating with all of you.

    thanks,

    sam

    Hi, I'm Greg.

I was close to music from age 6 to 22 and now I'm in chase of equipment to get back. Not yet found it.

    Hi,
Big fan of 2.1 systems with DRC. Also enjoy earphones with good bass to use while commuting. When it comes to headphones, still looking for something better than e-stats. SR-007MK1 bass with SR009 midrange and a little less treble would be my perfect choice.

    Hi everyone,

I've been lurking for a while and am looking to learn more and ask questions along the way. Thanks to you all, I'm enjoying a a HD 6XX paired with a SW51+. Trying to fight the impulse to spend more without a large benefit. Unfortunately, I have begun to have the thoughts of, "if I could just have a little more clarity and top end, but keep the midrange magic and tonality.... " If anyone ever finds something like that, please let me know. Currently looking at JAR 650 and maybe JAR 600.

If you seek clarity, SW51 has it. The answer could be in switching headphones (6XX lean towards the darker side of things), or it could easily be in your DAC. What's your chain?
Jar 600 would get you there more than JAR 650. JAR 600 leans towards the 650 while keeping some of the clarity you say you're after.

Hi. I'm most interested in gear that helps me watch tutorials better. I tend to watch them at 3.5x speed. I don't read much. I want to understand speech at max speeds. I also listen to music, but don't care how it sounds right now.

You should be looking at Audacity software and its Effects menu to improve the clarity of speech. Vocal Reduction and Isolation, Change Speed and Noise Reduction would be good starting points. You might also find plug-ins that are suitable.

You may need to extract the audio from any video file to use Audacity.

@Erroneous I'm using a Bluenote Node 2i into a Gungnir Multibit and then into the SW51+. I enjoy the overall sound of my system, but I would like to have just a smidge more sparkle in the highs (or perhaps a smidge more highs, I'm not sure exactly as to which is more accurate). Forgot to mention that my DAC is the first version of the Gungnir.

Switching headphones is the thing. Jar 600 will give minimal improvements. Something like an Aeolus will be better.

My name is Rafael. I bought my first stereo system in 1989, when I saved my first stipends at my first job.

In my journey I went to Astell&Kern, Chord, Harman Kardon, JVC, Marantz, Musical Fidelity, Naim, Onkyo, Philips, Pro-Ject, Rotel, Schiit, Sony and others.

My speakers are B&W, Dynaudio and Spendor; Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser headphones as well.

I listen to my stereo, ride motorcycles and run marathons. I moved my family, audio kit and 2500 CDs around Africa, America and Europe when we traveled because of my job. Presently we live in Milan and I work in Nice.

I like Prince, enjoy exploring new music and treasure my CDs.

Main system: Spendor A6, Naim CD5i, Naim SuperUniti

    2nd system: Hugo 2+2go, Schiit Aegir, B&W CDM1

    Hello SBAF :)
This site has the name similar to my company's name. And it is kind of funny.
I have been reading the site for a few years without an account. But I had not urged to sign a new one because I cannot understand almost all technical subjects in other members posts and my English is not good as well.
My headphone is 9 years old LCD2 r2 (unicorn one?) and I have bought/re-bought and sold dozen audio devices. And admitly I don't particularly like Schiit house sound (lacks of details and microdynamic) but it seems to get a high regard here.
I don't like HD650 and tube amps as well but it could be my lack of experience with high-end gears. My most expensive audio gear was the Gungir A1 and the cheapest one is the Apple usb-c dongle that I love. Maybe I am a weird or incompetent person but I think it is a bliss for my wallet now(though I spent quite much for this hobby :p)
So now I am finding a less-than-$400 headamp for my LCD2 that had a lovely soundstage and natural timbre out from my old Asgard 1. My dac is the Zen signature. So I am reading and reading..

Howdy SBAF! Late-in (mid)life audio interest, getting a toe into the waters of the headphone world. I primarily joined to donate and thank the crew here for it's long back-log of conversations, topics, and reviews. I don't have much expertise to add, but this has been an invaluable place to lurk for a few months and start getting a basic approach to (headphone) audio. I started out with a Topping 10DS, Schiit Heresy, and Senn 560s back in May....and now I'm groovin' with Planars, R2R, and tubes here in August.

Combo "best and simultaneously worst" first 90 day discovery:
I really, really wanted to find that things like "synergies", or "Burn in", or rolling tubes were more message-board/hobby lore than reality. $100 D/S Dac, $100 opamp Amp....good and done. Oh man....changing the tube in my Lyr 3 greatly impacts sound. Different amps sound notably different....different DACs sounds notably different....and then DAC/Amp combos sound different! My mood makes things sound different (whether I'm relaxing with a drink on the weekend or trying to multi-task on a working week-day).

It's both been fun and a little challenging OCD-wise. I'm going to try....try real hard....to avoid rolling different cable/connectors or pushing too hard on streaming sources and to leave the decisions around headphones-DAC-Amp. At least for the rest of 2021. Or at least until maybe next month....

Edit : For initial/intro post- what I'm rolling with currently:

    Bifrost 2 : Soekris 2541 : Modius : Geshelli J2 -> Lyr 3 : Fluxlabs FA-22 : Archel 2.5 : Erish : Magnius : Heresy -> LCD-X (21') : Elex : DT880 (600 ohm) : Grado Hemps
