This is a tangent, but I wanted to address something raised up here about SBAF.

Believe it or not, it's not fun to always shit on gear. Shitty gear is not fun to listen to in any capacity that takes it further than "passing curiosity." Ask me how I know.

Also, we as a community haven't heard everything, true. But sometimes our silence on some piece of gear is telling. I'll just leave it at that.

Most of (not all) of the gear poo-pooing is behind us. Changstar was well-known for this. SBAF is a little more grown up, but we'll still occasionally sling shit because why not? Ultimately this is a hobby and making fun of something occasionally is fun.

@caute specifically regarding synergy; take the notations on SBAF about synergy as more "factor to consider" versus outright "this sucks."

And now to return on topic; I actually glean a lot from Crinacle even though my preferences are vastly different than his. Since I know where he's coming from it's easy for me to triangulate.

Agreed! I find it more enjoyable to spend most of one’s time telling people what you love and like than talking about what you hate.

Hate is cheap to spew, you don’t have to think much. We’ve all done it, we all know.

The hobby is full of nepotism and sycophantry especially among official reviewers but even in more casual contexts, so I think it’s natural to be drawn to assessments that bend toward negative or might seem relatively contrarian. It’s the industry and the hobby’s fault, really, but yeah, I also agree that you can easily overcorrect and just begin to blindly follow voices that seem to “tell it like it is” without having much reason to trust them other than being motivated to do so because of their being a negative voice vs. what seems to otherwise be a positive consensus/press. SBAF is valuable in that way because it can build a sense of community and trust in impressions, positive or negative.

Tarun, British Audiophile. Sure, every reviewer has their own opinions but hes very knowledgeable on the inner workings of components, amongst other things.

    1. It's less the hating on gear but rather the wasting of my time. I think people here understand this now: I will usually have other people screen gear for me before I accept it. There's no need for me to review it early or first, even though many people would like this. There's just not enough time in the day.
    2. The review style has changed here to one of describing the sound as opposed to grading the sound. Of course we will interject what we may personally prefer. However the point is the help readers get an idea if a product suits their tests or their systems (again, component synergy). I think I've becoming a better reviewer over time because of moving to this approach as opposed to the Changstar style of "shit" or "not shit". On occasion, there is shit, and I'll draw a line in the sand. But even then, I'll remind readers that one man's shit is another man's treasure.
    3. I'll hate on stuff which has already been well received to provide a counterpoint. Providing an alternative opinion is important. When I read reviews of products or restaurants, I will always hit the one or two star reviews. Many times these poor reviews are "user error" or a matter of different preference.
On this last point, when I was looking for a Paki restaurant in Austin that served Paya (trotters cooked for a long time into a fatty melted connective tissue stew), these one star reviews convinced me this would be the right place:

Being vegetarian, we only had dal & naan and few appetizers and had to pay the full buffet price. It could have a separate pricing if the menu is skewed towards non-veg.

(From white girl) I ordered chicken quorma for pickup online, and when I got home I discovered they gave me lamb quorma and it was DISGUSTING. The meat is old. It has been sitting around so long the grease won't mix into the sauce it just pools on top. 0/10

Extremes are the best reference points for triangulation, I agree.
The fact that people rather offer reference points instead of trying to give a judgement which is deemed to be valid for all is one of the things that drew me to this place.

That does seem to be the mark of a traditional Paki restaurant. That's exactly how they make it at one near me. As you say, different preferences.

Yep. And even here at the southern end of the sub-continent, one often has to get through the layer of floating oil before reaching the meat.

(and this is the first I ever heard of for-a-white-girl curry. I'm a white male, and I don't, personally, like much chilli. But the best I ever heard on the topic came from a brown female: "I don't see the point of food that hurts.")

Sorry to go a bit off topic here, as someone who grew up in the UK, shortening Pakistani as above isn't far off using the N word in the US, so I just had a bit of a double take moment.
I believe a lot of the Indian restaurants in the UK were set up by folks who came from Bangladesh (originally East Pakistan after partition)
I think the really oily curry you describe is pretty much standard in the UK, seems to be what people want. When I go back there now to visit I find it really unappetising. Very different to what we get in Australia, and what I've had in Little India in Singapore. @Thad E Ginathom 's experience living in India would appear to contradict my experience though :)
In a country that big the food is massively varied, given the differences in climate.
    Waffling over.
