I had a little more time today and hauled out some scraps to rig up a test bed for the OBs

some old shelf brackets lying in the basement - make do as stands
some stakes that were used for putting out some signs for my sons graduation bash a year ago - side posts
Doors from the kitchen cabinets we pulled out when we redid the kitchen earlier this year - speaker boards

so all in, just a bit of cutting ---- I really do need to get a table saw - cut these with a little dremel cabinet saw, not ideal. I also have never used a router and thus don't have one, so holes cut out with a jig saw.

now to assemble the crossovers and figure out how to hook it up stably.

can't wait to get a first listen to the potential.

Very cool, I like the idea of using old wood you already had laying around. Looking forward to reading your impressions of the finished speakers and seeing pics of the final wiring.

Continuation of the long weekend with no other commitments

Crossover's bolted to a cut-off which provided a spot for the binding posts

    Wired up for bi-amping

I borrowed @zerodeefex idea of using the moth badge - I know this is only a temporary housing but it just seemed like the right thing to do

set up where the Maggies were - Linn driving the bass units and my modified adcom ( bias up to 4W class A and adding some ultraquiet cooling fans - 9dB at max flow )

I ran each amp separately first to make sure both sides sounded roughly equal and that all drivers were doing their thing
    - passed the first test but I knew that the bass units were going to need some volume matching = the advantage of pure digital crossover and active amping each drivers - a luxury I currently do not have .

This impression was immediately realized as soon as I powered the whole thing up , so I fiddled with an L-Pad to get things close enough to allow for me to listen .....

So very impressed, very wide image but with pinpoint accuracy , bass is not as hit you in the chest but you know it is there and when the subbass throbs the floorboards join in.

For a temporary fix , I am going to run 2 preamps and thus have the ability to drop the upper frequency and balance the bass without any resistors in the signal path where it matters most. I am also going to play with the option of running the fullranger without the ribbon. The really nice thing with it set up this way is that I am not hearing that 10K shout that I was hearing with the Moths previously.

    Very glad I tried this

@dBel84 - i missed it but are those Cicada drivers or Lowthers? Do you have any time alignment issues or comb filtering with the tweeter mounted sideways with the midrange driver?

They are Cicada drivers . I do not hear any obvious issues - I pulled out the resistors and dropped a tubed unity gain buffer in front of the adcom driving the mids/highs and it sounds phenomenal.

I moved quicker on the build than I thought I would and have not yet built my test rig - plan was to use the linkwitz modified ominidirectional capsule to take some measurements and get some objective data on how the speaker was really performing.

I have a few more boards cut should I need to try different configs - separate tweeter from mid-driver or remove it entirely.

for the time being I am just going to sit back and enjoy.

This is for the lxmini and you have to spin your own version for diff configs. But same/similar design otherwise. Realized my upgraded JFETs might need a diff board so I'll stuff the stock ones with the cheaper parts and if I'm happy I'll cut a new board if necessary.

I am very curious about this - need to read all the material I pulled off on how to develop your own curves as this is ultimately the best situation for OB ..dB

Am I missing something critical ??

    upload_2018-9-22_15-38-4.png

    upload_2018-9-22_15-38-31.png

Board has output for Hi and Low , chassis has Hi,Mid,Low

I have been trying to convince myself this is a 3-way option but analysis of the details sadly tells me not.

If this is the chassis that will be selling, I would just buy the chassis but again, that little clause that says that the image might not match the product ......

    I remain patiently hopeful

I read talk of a 3-way version of the XO in a thread somewhere, with one board per channel in a balanced configuration. Maybe they killed those plans.

It would make sense to me to just make one kind of chassis for both 2-way and 3-way to simplify things and have less problems for stocking items.

I’m in the parts acquisition phase to build a pair of Trio 15s using the Heil AMT tweeters, but I was wondering about the baffles. I was thinking about using Baltic birch, but started wondering about using solid hardwoods instead. I know a contemporary speaker box made out of solid wood is a bad plan, but is there a downside to using it exclusively on the baffles?

    Doesn't matter for open baffle.

I used birch initially and then gave up once I realized I was veneering everything anyways.

Now that I'm effectively going to end up doing something similar to the quintets, I'm having my baffles CNCed from 3/4" MDF to save time. I'll share out some 2D CAD for this eventually once I design the stands appropriately.
