Well, that "shitty" artist just won album, record and song of the year plus best new artist at the Grammys. So maybe you should cut her some slack. Just like I wouldn't presume to tell the top rookie driver in F1 how to drive his car.

Grammys don't mean f**k all and are basically another popularity contest. I've listened to her album and I thought the entire thing was contrived teenage angst garbage.

From a major label with the "Hi-Rez Audio" label on it.

Also, good album but they could had cut three or four songs from it. If they would had done that, it was be a great one.

Holt's Law is still in effect as always.

RAM is hackneyed - a poor attempt to imitate Chic-funk, with disco and Daft Punk's worst electronic inclinations. All the features are phoned in, especially Pharrell and chintzy Nile Rodgers chucking. Daft Punk's albums are marred by too much filler.

The discussion around how Billie Eilish is holding a microphone is far more interesting than the Yggdrasil.

The way she holds it reminds me of my first girlfriend, and not in a good way.

I don't really know much about Eilish other than she seems to be this generation's Lorde with a dose of edgelord on top. I'm listening to "bad guy" right now. It's annoyingly catchy in its own way. The layering of sounds feels well done in the sense that the lines can all be heard cleanly, despite some of the individual lines feeling kinda crunchy (not sure if that's the recording or processing or both). The apparent dynamic range seems better than the usual pop hash. She has breath in her vocals, there's a soft touch and headroom to it, which is perhaps more a testament to her brother for recording that and bringing it up to match the backing track without feeling too forced. I like it more than usual pop vocals that are typically so close-mic'd and shouty you can practically feel them spitting into the pop filter. The overall structure is what I could call formulaic with the small variance at the end; that's not a slight in any way. It fits and they're not trying to break the mold.

I dunno, I'm not a recording engineer. I hear things in this song that are think are reasonably well done, or at least not bad. The style isn't my thing, but compared against other top40 whatevers that I try to avoid, it's not awful.

There's a fun video of her and her brother talking about recording in her bedroom by Rolling Stones. Like most people good at things, they're both quite neurotic about things lining up perfectly, tons of takes, everything has to be 'just so' etc.

I personally don't find her music to meet the hype albeit a few tracks are catchy, but frankly what she and her brother have put together at such a young age IS f'ing impressive. Plus, she's a very good singer with a unique and cool voice.

It must be a particular recording challenge to mix an electronic backing track and a vocal track and make it sound good.

I've heard good acoustic recordings and good electronic music recordings, but I can't off the top of my head think of a good recording that integrated both.

Off topic, but... I've never fired a gun. Is it necessary to grip one's balls? Might they fly off or something? It is part of the proper for stepping off the side of a ship in s ship wreck. So they don't get forced up into your throat when you hit the water, as the instructor on my basic sea safety course put it.

Only twenty years? I'm no historian, but I don't understand why today's audiophiles don't understand that the loudness wars date way back to the days of vinyl. OK, so maybe not poorly recorded, but poorly mastered --- which is picking hairs so far as the listener is concerned. I'd take a guess at fifty or sixty years. Any better offers?

Listen to this. In the 21st century a tribute like this to someone who is almost forgotten unless you are into Disco is unheard of. Daft Punk are sample junkies and when they want to make good music, you will be hooked. They know their sound and they know their inspirations (sources). If on the next album they bring in Mike Oldfield all the Prog Rock fans will lose their minds and finally accept Disco and House in their hearts.

P.S. Sorry for the derailment. That album is one of the best albums of this century when you know how much time and energy it takes to really understand the roots of your own music and still make it sound contemporary. "R.A.M." is the kind of album that makes music nerds, especially sample junkies feel alive.

Most 80s and 90s rock and most Andy Wallace mixes have sampled drums. They were just better and gave a more of a shit back in the day.

I laughed the first time I heard this song... which was actually pretty late in college because as I might've mentioned in Marv's Best Daft Punk Song thread I started out watching those Galaxy Railways-style anime vids for music off Discovery on Cartoon Network back when I was a kid, and this was loooooong before we got regular internet access. Didn't even consider that they had stuff I'd not heard before then, so it wasn't until I was a fair bit older that I even realised Discovery wasn't their first album.

And no I don't recall seeing the weird music video for Around the World on MTV back then. My developing mind must've blocked out all the trauma :p

    Yeah, right.....

Not a Bieber fan and not an Eilish fan. Billie doesn’t win all those awards at the Grammys if she is just plain terrible all the way around AND her album is poorly recorded and produced. So, even though I am not a fan, it doesn’t mean I think she deserves no credit or positive feedback. Maybe she doesn’t deserve all those awards....maybe she does.
