Construction and renovations nearly complete, until then we've still got a crapload of bricks, gravel, and sand taking up space. On the one hand it's untidy as hell, on the other the one doggo has a fun little slide.

More than a year later, I'm happy to say that adopting this vandal was the best thing that happened to our lives, he's full of love and has tons of energy, and he's the best companion we could ever hope for. We learned (and still learning) a lot from him, we love you Beefie <3

Btw he's huge and in great, athletic shape, even the vet is surprised, he weights at a healthy 5.8kg of muscle and measures 86cm from head to paws while standing (he's 1 year, 6 months old).

All our best Rob. Losing fuzzy ones is never easy, and she clearly was a very pretty and lovely girl.

Yes, she was something else. Wonderful affectionate cat. She’d sit on my lap in the daytime and then on my wife’s lap in the evening. And then cuddle up between us at night. I thought she’d be with us a lot longer than we had with her. But at least for the time we had her, she was happy and loved. Doesn’t get any better than that.

I thought I should post up a few pics of our recent rescue dog Joy. She's a perfect little dog, super happy to have a home and yet super mellow. When our other dog barks, Joy just looks at her like she's lost it, and goes right back to sleep without making a peep.

There is something so special about the expression of a rescue dog that now has a happy home.

Agreed, it's like a 50/50 mix of love and disbelief that soon morphs into a 50/50 mix of love and relief.

While I love rescues and all the happy stories, smiles and wagging tails, if you want to see some totally f***ed up operations then go check out many of the shelters out there. I've encountered untrained staff making medical decisions against the wishes of the vets, receptionists turning away low-income pet owners with dying animals because they were 15 minutes late for an appointment after their cross-town bus was behind schedule, fund-raising events that lost money but made the board members feel good about themselves, one shelter bad mouthing another in the press purely to try to steal their funding, "unusual" accounting, grant money re-purposed against the clearly laid out terms of the grant, all types of crazy crap.

So three things you can do to help in your local area: 1) adopt from shelters - the dog's aren't involved in the shenanigans and need homes and love, 2) if you are a business person and/or have some usable real-life finance/accounting/operational skills then volunteer and try to help your local shelters run better, and don't get sucked into the political crap, and 3) before you donate money to a shelter (especially if it's a big #) be sure to dig into their public records, ask questions about how the money will be used, look for conflicts of interest in board members, etc.

One unfortunate truth I've encountered - some people doing good for animals can often treat humans like crap and feel that they are above the rules and that cutting corners is okay.

    Off my soap-box now. Cheers
