Figured I'd post a new pic since my little pup is now a 40lb teenager. Lost all his puppy teeth (thank God, those things hurt).

He only needs to be able to raise his left paw up to his left cheek for that expression of completely camp but contented cuteness to be complete!
'Soooo, you didn't think I could look this cute hey? hmmmmm'

    As canine side-glances go, that's a WIN.

I wish my update to this post wasn't so late -- and posthumous.

We found a partner for Bert in Boba, a lovely lady bunny who lived to be just over 3 years old (spending only 14 months in our care and in the company of Bert). Unfortunately Boba just passed away yesterday after a hard-fought battle with a sudden acute condition -- it was a tortuous 48 hours for all of us.

    Her exact obituary:

I miss having bunnies but after 4 i dont think I can handle the horrible feeling when they depart so early.

Big heartfelt hug for everyone at your home.

Thanks for the kind words and for honoring Boba, folks. It still kills me to know what her tiny 4lb body went through during her last days (and the grief of a phone call letting us know she was being ripped away from us), but we cherish the memories she leaves behind.

Beyond that, remember to kiss, hug and cuddle your pets from time to time. They're not here forever.

    our short term foster, Cindy!

Edit: She's only 2 and it's obvious she's had a less-than-pampered go of it so far. She's likely had a litter, and she's covered in small scars, but she's a pure sweetheart and needs a forever home, so PM me if you have a heart big enough to welcome a little beagle-hound mix with a wonderful temperment. She can also disarm a squeaker tennis ball in less than 4 minutes, in case you require those services.

Incredibly satisfying how perfectly that turtle fits inside of that rock.

So this isn't exactly a pics of pets post, but it'll include a pic.

This is Johnny Cakes. Johnny was supposed to be a short term "bridge" foster of ours for only a few days.

Backstory: as some of you might know through my profile posts, we recently lost our most beautiful girl Tucker to some complications to a pretty dreadful sudden onset disease. So we're still mourning, but trying to share the fostoring experience to help us work through the loss.

In 2016, after only about 4 months of knowing Tucker (and Tucker's mommy), we took a trip to Nags Head NC and stayed in a small-ish single family rental. About 3 days after our arrival in NC, we were going to go for a bike ride up north on the island, and loaded the bikes onto the roof rack on my 2003 VW Passat wagon. We left Tucker with my GF's mom, who had operated a doggy boarding/shelter most of her adult life, and was pretty dog-adept.

About 5 minutes after we'd left, we got a call from my GF's mom that Tucker had slipped the door and was out of the house; no collar, no nothing. Panic ensued; Tucker was a 100% country dog and bound for sound.

I hopped back in my car and figured to drive towards the strip mall nearest, and patrol near the garbage dumpsters in the alleyway behind the strip mall. At that point, we're in panic mode as there's a 4-lane 50mph highway less than a 1/4 mile from the house Tucker escaped from. She can't make it to the bypass; no way, no how.

As I'm driving along at 7mph alleyway, I hear a patterned clinkle of what sounds like a miniature horse at full tilt and glance into my sideview mirror and see a Tucker-dog on full tilt.

Tucker leaped into my driver's side window, into my lap, and the look on her face was of absolute, earth shattering fright. terror which has no bound.

And I held her in my arms, and it was transcendantly beautiful, because she had me and I had her. I so fell in love with that dog, right there, fully and completely.

Today. So today we transferred Mr. Johnny to a longer term foster about 40 minutes away. At around 4pm we got call from the new foster that Johnny had slipped the door and was on the lam. We called the fostering agency and made contact with their missing dogs contact immediately. We immediately jumped in the truck and hauled ass over. Johnny had been sighted in a patch of woods of about 4 acres less than a 1/2 mile from the fostering home (and about 3/4 mile from a 2-lane 55mph road. He absolutely can't make it to that road; no way I'm going to let that happen).

Once we arrived, it was nearly sunset. So we walked the perimeter of the woods and started planning for a few points to settle in to start calling for him. After about 15 minutes of calm planning, I settled in near a corner where I could cover a couple sight lines.

At about 6:45pm, and totally dark, I heard a couple rustles in the woods floor, so I started whistling and calling gently. Shuffle, shuffle, silence. I heard a bit more movement, so I called to it and within about 10 seconds I knew it was him. I waited for him to close on me a bit, and was greeted by a little 30lb wonderboy, commando crawling towards me through the prickles and underbrush.

I scooped him up and clutched him so close. God, how good it was to scoop him up.

JFC, what a night. 2 for 2, so far, of rescuing some close calls.
