This is my basement "watch the game(s), drink some beer(s), and have some fun" setup, and the JBL 530's up on the monoprice monolith stands are "new to this room" as of about 18 hours ago... Previously I had them haphazardly sitting on actual shelves stuffed up near a wall in the 3rd floor "loft" that my kids have basically comandeered as a play room, and I liked the way they sounded so much I decided to "call them up to AAA" (as pictured) for more/better usage, and relegate the Polk towers that had been here to lesser duties.

    SVS PB-1000 sub
    Samsung PN-58B650 Plasma and 2x Samsung LN-T4065F LCD's.
    Two nvidia shield game controllers

Not pictured (on other side of the wall, in the room with the door to the left)
PC and NAS running Roon Core (and Plex Media Server, Steam, and HDHomeRun DVR)
A Raspberry Pi running Ropieee for optimal performance
A Chromecast Audio for easy grouping with the other zones in my house
    Two Nvidia Shields
Onkyo TX-NR809 <-- I select one input from my logitech and the audio moves from one screen to the other.

It definitely isn't "high end audio" and I prefer my living room rig (a few pages ago on this thread) for critical listening... but it sure is a fun "space" for social gatherings where we want to listen to some tunes or watch some games (or both).

I've been really enjoying the move from headphones to speakers the last couple months. This setups been fantastic for the $200 I paid for amplification and the speakers, I added a Modi and I was set after that.

    The full chain is:
PC -> Modi 3 -> tube headphone amp -> 80w of vintage Class AB power -> Elac B5.2s

But an upgrade is definitely imminent, whether it's diy or some of the fancy monitor stuff...coming soon

This is the kitchen rig, DONE.
Everything sounds good on the Overnight Sensations even at lower volume. It glosses over ugly recordings but remains motivational. I will miss the Mid Magic from the Fostex rig but I was getting boxed in to what sounded good on it.

Some might remember my post in this thread:

    https://www.superbestaudiofriends.o...rom-his-moms-basement.7751/page-7#post-254961

Since then I have run across a good offer for a pair of KH420 and could not resist:

    upload_2020-3-13_22-50-31.jpeg

    The stands are custom made:

    upload_2020-3-13_22-51-58.jpeg

    The stands incorporate this:

    http://www.bmsspeakers.com/fileadmi...ium/bms_15n830v2_2011-04_neodymium_woofer.pdf

    with 1000 class D watts

The shiny things at 12 o' clock on the dustcaps are microphones in order to motion feedback (info at https://www.mfbfreaks.nl/pdf/mfb/567/Service567.pdf)

The PA drivers match well with the 10" drivers of the KH420:

    http://www.phlaudio.com/products/?n...oducts&cHash=0854605dd229a33e3966c1e8e5208418

    which are PA, too.

I run the woofers with a subsonic set to 13 Hz. Even with the volume set to half in order to match the KH420 there is a nice feel.

    Shake the disease

I like it a lot. You definitely get the sense that the thing wants to f'ing kill you when you turn it on. Big high voltage sounds. But it sounds great. Really happy with it.

With recent addition of Schiit Sol, my speaker system has been rather complete and sounds pretty satisfying.

Besides the Sol, the source includes a compact Rega Apollo-R CD player. Rest of the chain: (EC Classic Phono)---LTA MicroZOTL Pre---Triode Audio 2A3 Monos---Omega Super 6 Alnico speakers/REL T7/i subs.

My apartment living room is too large and poor for acoustics. Thus, the system has been moved to my moderate-size bedroom at least temporarily. With bed and other things as natural acoustics helpers, the system sounds good without much audio-specific treatment other than a cheap reflection control panel.

With Sol being my first experimentation with vinyl record playback, I have much to learn. However, with the few old time records (e.g., the Sound of Jazz, Billie Holiday songs), Sol produces some magic sound, distinct from CDs. I did not hear as much differences with contemporary records like by Norah Jones or Adele.

Adding the REL subs has also made a significant improvement. While I like the speed and tonality of trebles/mids and the imaging capability of the Omegas, lack of bass is a weakness. Now with the RELs, the effects go beyond enhancing bass. Soundstage, imaging depths, and tonality are also getting better. This is one of important insights during my audio journey so far.

Yeah, I definitely... uh... pushed the boat out on the Bottlehead stuff. But I'm done for a while.

My rig is very transparent. Here's a photo, like looking through glass, eh?

(I tried to post a link of my rig but no joy....forum wouldn't accept the link!)

On at least two pictures in this thread subwoofer are used as speaker stands. Is that really possible or a good idea? I would expect that the sub enclosures would transmit vibrations to speakers and vice versa.

That was the basis of the great BBC monitor LS3/5A and a number of more recent designs from a number of different manufacturers. I would advocate some degree of decoupling but do not see it as a major problem for sound..dB

EDITED to add a pic or 2

Linkwitz LX521 is probably the "flimsiest" coupling (although the bass drivers are decoupled from the housing)

I have my speakers on top of the subs as well. They both liked that spot so i stacked them and then i could cheap out on the stands by using concrete tables. Everything is decoupled from eachother with sorbothane.

Old pic but the general idea is the same, also bonus woofer.
