I concur with your statement, but to me his subsequent posts made it clear that he used "measure" for "pick up with a microphone" and "hear" for "pick up with your eardrum".

It’s interesting to compare the ratio of posts made to likes received. Your ratio is not bad; many SBAF “Friends” have a similar metric. At least polite disagreement yields dialectic and learning, and that’s much better than irrelevance.

On objectivity, I can’t help but share my 2¢: there’s an important distinction between things we “can measure” and things we “have measured.” Standard measurements provide only thin slices across the high-dimensional space that makes up our experience. Probably, given modern tools, all important experiential things can be measured, but we might not take the right measures as a matter of course, and might not even know which measures are relevant. Hence the limits of human-mediated objectivity.

Finally, as insulting as you may find it, at least you have a custom title; better than being just another faceless Rando! Welcome to the SBAF hall of fame.

    Hey @Ardacer -

I count myself as being in the objectivism philosophical camp.

That written, the more 'active' the component, the more inclined I am to leave room open to the measurements are incomplete, and turn to trusted reviewers to fill in with their impressions.

This is obvious when comparing transducers. No graph conveys subtleties (at least not when I look at them) like 'I hear a metallic tonality', or 'I hear annoying one note bass'. That kind of subtle impression I rely on other's ears (and my own).

Thing is even when it comes to amps (and DACs, even if it is just the analog section of DACs), there are subtle traits that I enjoy, or annoy me. The measurements tell me if something is grossly wrong, but they never convey (to me) those subtle details.

Hang out, I do think there is a value in combining objective views with human subjective impressions ;)

Let me give you guys an example.

Yesterday @Cspirou came to my home to share with me his Dynalo 2 build. It was still w/o a box and pretty much barebones.

The Dynalo 2 has similar connectivity as a Jotunheim (minus the DAC option). As far as I know the Jotunheim measures fairly well, though I haven't measured myself the particular unit I have on loan.

In terms of looks, the Jotunheim is heavier finished product. The Dynalo 2 we listened was still a work in progress in terms of looks.

I felt the Jotunheim was more "hazy" and "blurred" than @Cspirou's Dynalo 2. The Dynalo 2 had a "blacker" background and to me it was more engaging. Feeding both the Jotunheim and the Dynalo 2 was my Focusrite 2i2 pre-out using balanced connectivity and ASIO drivers. The amps were driving @Cspirou's HD6XXs. Different headphones and sources my yield different results.

The next step would be to submit the two units through distortion, frequency response and other set of standard measurements and hope that any given measurement will correlate to what was heard.

(trying double quotes, please ignore the eye sore if format turns out bad)

Guys, @Ardacer has been a good sport, in case we missed it.
Don't need to pound on it when someone actually listens to what you've got to say.

"Poor understanding of science" sounds too literal to me. "Science Nut" has a better ring to it, more lighthearted.

Yah, this guy seems legit reasonable and friendly. Not sure what prompted the move into WTWFAIP. Didn't follow the whole thread though. Welcome to the forum @Ardacer.

Thanks everyone. You managed to warm my heart :)

Congrats on Science Nut :) .

I'd be happy with anything else.

    "Nwavguy's no1 fan"
    "Resident objectivist"
    "Deaf but reads measurements"
    "Trusts science too much"
    "Learn to hear"
    "Git good, you foo"
    "anything else"
    "waiting to be banned"
    "banhammer imminent"
    "super best audio noob"
    "Objectively, a pussy"
    "retarded soundwave"
    "too few particles in brain"
hell, even a fckn "Rando forever" is probably better.
    Mr. Sorbothane is way superior.

Poor understanding of science still stings. I'd literally be happy with anything else. They managed to find the single thing to piss me off and make me sad. :D I can't shake the feeling it was meant to be offensive.
    Such is life.

LOL good job @David De Lucena. Now you need a new profile picture; the kid looks too cool to give any shits about science.

    Wait... It just hit me...

Is this thread, perhaps the first one ever in the How to Win Friends and Influence People , that actually was about making friends and having a nice conversation?

If nothing else, you show exemplary understanding of yourself, and of other people.

Hell, I think you're more deserving of Friend status than I, given my admittedly rudimentary understanding of acoustics, engineering, and other fields that most on this board are (seemingly) well-read on; flawed as your understanding of certain fundamental aspects thereof reportedly are (and I'm just going by hearsay here), at least you have a frigging clue what people are talking about without having to Google it! My main "contributions" to date coming up on my one-year anniversary on SBAF have been somewhat tenuous statements on audio, more affirmed opinions on morals, ethics, and propriety, cruddy jokes, and following through on conversational tangents (... which I also do in person. A lot.).

I've taken more than I've given back to the forum in that I've had my ass and wallet saved multiple times by the content here, but when I do try to chime in, the most I can do is affirm what others with more experienced ears have said before, the only addition being how much these align with my preferences (which at this point are still volatile save for my hating upper treble spikes). For the most part and during the bulk of my time on here, I just read and spam Likes (yes, I'm that self aware). While your posts did generate a bit of a shit storm, it ultimately produced information that could be used to the forum's benefit.

It seems to me this thread really is suited to the HtWFaIP forum, only it emphatically forgot to put its tongue in cheek. Well done, and thank you for engendering more educated discussion.

Mass Effect 2 is the best in the franchise, and one of the few FPS games I actually like. Haven't yet tried MS:A, but I hear it's akin to Dragon Age 2 in that it's... not great compared to what came before.

I'm sure that you will win friends and influence people. And have started already.

Science only, as per Hydrogenaud.io is not SBAF.

Science ghetto as per reality-is-bad-for-sales adFi is certainly not SBAF.

Science is just a nice part of the mix here.

    Add me to the list.

And even though I might be said to be pro-science, there are threads here I have no hope of even understanding :eek:o_O.

Thanks @Lyer25 and @Thad E Ginathom . :) You're too kind. You don't need to be well versed in sound, or any science to enjoy an amiable discussion about hifi, I'd argue. Subjective impressions are great, really. Without them, what's the point... and everyone can contribute there. Also, I have considered sharing my knowledge of measuring and designing speakers here. Granted, I'm far from perfect and I'm 100% certain there are people here with waaay more experience than me, but I thought about writing a small practical guide for the regular dude, and more experienced people could point out potential errors and/or improve on it. That was the plan. But I guess I understood things poorly after all, and communicated them even worse. Without false self humbleness, I think I have a very good understanding of physics, scientific method, and audio in general. And I have a very great passion for these things. That's why the title hurt me so much.
About me deserving a friend status, that's kind of you to say, but probably wrong. I've been here for what, a week? And already made a small disaster :D

Also, YES! ME2 is the best thing ever. Didn't touch Andromeda.

    Thanks :)
The thread wasn't moved here. I started it here. Yes, I came to the sewer willingly.

Edit: was disappointed and prepared to give up and go away. Stayed and gave myself and the forum a second chance, because awesome people.
Edit2: still pissed a bit at the title. trying to cope.
