This is a super duper closeup view of a drop of nickel superalloy that splashed (and subsequently supercooled) onto another nickel based substrate. The lines you see are sorta kinda steps in the crystal structure of the metal. They aren't actual atomic steps, more like a grouping of layers of atoms where each ones represents a defect that arises from residual stresses due to the supercooling.

Think of it like pages in a book, and the residual stresses are trying to slide the pages laterally to make a slope instead of a vertical edge. The spine is resisting, but above a certain point the spine breaks and instead of a smooth slope you have a jagged step. Apply more stresses and each step can break down further. The lines above are the big steps; there are roughly 5-10 small steps between each one.

Now do all that during a liquid to solid transition that happens at 10^6 K/s

Sharing your namesake, it was taken on a Zeiss microscope and camera. I don't know any specifics beyond that.

I've been shooting a lot of Houston lately for a class I was helping with.

This first shot was pretty special. I was able to get access to the 50th floor of a building in downtown. I printed it LARGE on glass and it looks great.
