    Brilliant :D

And thanks. What I meant was that daily I have access to very costly audio rig. Knowing its owner, going turntables would most likely mean him going after adequately expensive deck and even pricier cartridge. I'd be scared to use the latter, these things are so fragile after all, and I imagine that skipping tracks on records could result in damage. But then again, perhaps I'm wrong.

I've never used a really posh deck. I've seen one unipivot arm that I wouldn't like to wave around, but having said that, I thought its owner was much more rough with it than I would have been.

Vinyl requires a steady hand, although that little does a lot of that for you. The LPs are probably more fragile than the gear they get played on. I have the warmest of feelings for my record-playing days, but I can't say that I liked the fragility of vinyl, and shellac was worse!

    Definitely an album listener, too.

Why settle for à quicky when able to enjoy the real thing 20 odd minutes sounds about right.

I have lived in a city sporting a gothic cathedral built real quick in 70 years imagine the mind set of people starting to build something knowing full well they would not live to see building finished.
I would not like to live in the Middle Ages but I think the haste of our age is not what we humans were made for

My VPI has a unipivot arm. The same unipivot designed arm used on their 15k+ turntable. It feels delicate until you get used to it. It’s not as finicky as you would think. The hardest part of dropping the needle on different tracks is trying to gauge where in that massive Grado cart the needle actually is. Not getting it to wobble side to side is a bit of a trick too.

I think you’d have to be pretty rough to damage a needle. I don’t think you could significantly scratch or damage vinyl even if you accidentally drop the need and it bounces a bit (done that). I don’t think vinyl is nearly as fragile as one would suspect.

Massive supernatural forces attacked my records while they were supposedly safe in their covers. This is the only explanation for new clicks appearing while the record has not even been handled. And yes, I was always extremely careful.

But the nature of the beast is that the next guy will post that he never had that problem, and he'll be right too. And I'm jealous of him!

Ha! That is very true. Do you use the MoFi anti static sleeves?

It’s true, vinyl as a medium is very finicky compared to others. I was more referring to the hazards of lifting and dropping the needle. I’ve done some bone headed things without any visible or audible damage to the record.

My deck is in dock, destined to remain in storage now, I'm afraid. Whilst I am perfectly happy that my exclusive source of music is now digital, and almost exclusively computer files, I reflect that I used to say A house without a turntable is not a home. A sad thought!

Anti-static sleeves sounds good. I just used the standard-issue ones.

I suspected that my take on cartridges could've been not exactly a spot on. Thanks. Now after all that talk the vinyl fever got me and you're also the one to blame :p.

Budget Pro-Jects any good? Seen a lot of them and was wondering... Perhaps it'd be good to buy something affordable and see how I feel about it.

I haven’t heard a Pro-Ject TT. I started with a Rega RP1. Sounded lifeless and congested. No bass, no treble sparkle. It had an ortofon red cart. Moved up to a VPI scout. No matter what I did, couldn’t get the damn thing to track. Inner groove distortion was annoying. This used an ortofon blue cart. I finally bit the bullet and got my current table. Haven’t looked back, and I have no strong desire to upgrade.

My TT choices were purely based on what my local shop sold. Hopefully our budget TT guys will chime in. I’m sure you can get a great experience for way far less than I paid.

In my limited experience - many of the cheap belt drive MDF plinth tables are fairly similair. Cartridges likely make a bigger difference here. Ortofon 2m RED sounds exactly like the description above. For $150 one could change the stylus to a Blue for a fairly significant upgrade.

Because many of the MDF plinth belt drive tables are so similar, I recommend getting whatever you can get the best deal on. Uturn Audio is pretty good in the US, Project is fine too (I had a debut carbon, and liked it).

Nothing like a morning spin of a fresh album (Jay Som "Anak Ko") while working from home on a Friday.

If you're looking for an LP that captures a Hammond B3, bass, and percussion in the most realistic way possible, check out the Shoji Yokouchi Trio Greensleeves. Recorded in 1978. Damn. I first heard it on a rega P3/ortofon blue/Lejonkou Gaia/PrimaLuna/Klipsch RF7 III setup.

It's one of those pressings that even a staunch anti-vinyl person would have a hard time criticizing.

So I got in a Maglev record player with the Project 9cc Carbon fiber arm and Ortofon OM10 cartridge to review. In part because I was curious to see if it was just a stunt, some cute tchotchke that got millennial approval, but had no underlying cojones. And also because it was available, lol.

    0DD79468-29D1-4F37-A4B6-E6E327FCABFA.jpeg

All come to those who wait, but briefly, this thing is seriously good. The cart has a scrim to it’s sound and a tendency to flatten dynamics, but it $80, after all. I can’t quite take apart the arm, and I don’t have another MM Cartidge to swap in yet, but I can tell the turntable itself has intrinsic strengths that deserve consideration. On the Kab strobe 33 1/3 was pretty solid (as one can be with the KAB )and while it was a tad fast at 45, it was fairly stable. No herky jerky speed fluctuations I’ve seen in a tables at this price. It’s ink black backgrounds, sense of pace and overall tonality is inviting. I will be listening the next few days to further get a handle on its pros and cons, but the sound is really enticing, initially.
