Do you feel that the departure of Mike Portnoy influenced any change in DT music? I was really into DT during their first 4 albums (impressionable high school years) but over time lost interest.

I agree more or less with @Valolilol that while technically incredible, there's usually so much going on and not enough "something" (which I can't describe well enough) to keep me engaged and listening.

Will have to spend some time with their recent work.

If they haven't already been mentioned in this thread, Rush remains for me the benchmark of Progressive master musicians who create music that is easily approachable but craft tunes that stay with you (over many years).

Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond has not been posted yet? That's a must hear:

Have you guys ever heard Demilich? They're definitely the most out there rock or metal band I've ever heard in my life. Truly a weirdo classic like early Morbid Angel and Atheist but transcending all convention past microtonal oriental music into outer space.

Yeah I think Mike Portnoy had some impact on DT, I miss him, but Mike Mangini is an outstanding drummer had holds world records in several different drum categories. I think Portnoy may be back someday, as I always thought of him as a leader for DT - as far as the departure of Portnoy as to the influence of DT's music, I would say yes, but not too much. I still very much enjoy alll of the releases that DT has done since his departure. The new album coming out in January 2016 I think is going to be an epic concept album, probably on par with the 1999 concept album "Metropolis PT 2: Scenes From a Memory.

As far as the comment as "Too much going on" in their compositions, I can see that some listeners may feel that way. Their music is definitely complicated and I think as a musician, it is something I appreciate very much as far as skill goes. However, there are still a lot of songs they have written that aren't as musically challenging and are straight -forward tracks.

If you have not heard their latest album the self-titled "Dream Theater" I think you may really enjoy it. Yes a few songs are complicated skill-wise with odd time signatures, time changes etc. however there are some very straight-forward tracks as well.

    1. "False Awakening Suite" 0:00

    "I. Sleep Paralysis"

    "II. Night Terrors"

"III. Lucid Dream" (instrumental; music by Petrucci, Rudess)

    2. "The Enemy Inside" 02:39

    3. "The Looking Glass" 08:57

    4. "Enigma Machine" (instrumental; music by Petrucci, Rudess, Myung, Mangini) 13:49

    5. "The Bigger Picture" 19:51

    6. "Behind the Veil" 27:40

    7. "Surrender to Reason" (lyrics by Myung) 34:24

    8. "Along for the Ride" (music by Petrucci, Rudess) 41:00

    9. "Illumination Theory" 45:45

"I. Paradoxe de la Lumière Noire" (instrumental)

    "II. Live, Die, Kill"

    "III. The Embracing Circle" (instrumental)

    "IV. The Pursuit of Truth"

    "V. Surrender, Trust & Passion"

*Times are not the length of the songs, just their position in the video.

I appreciate Dream Theater more than I dare to admit. This album simply sounds right in most ways except the vocal department. Thing is, play it a bit louder and my inner Metal-head wakes up. Then "Another Day" plays and am floored. Fuck this album is awesome in so many ways.

I concur, great album, I love all of the tracks but I have to say my 2 favorites off of it are Metropolis Pt.1 and Under a Glass Moon - The guitar solo in Under A Glass Moon is one of my favorites.

@Deep Funk - You may actually like this one if you haven't heard it. It is off of their Awake Album back in 1994 the album after Images and Words.

The Verve 's album "A Storm In Heaven" is a little Prog gem. It was their first album and showed off their enormous potential. Nick McCabe was beyond awesome.
