prog rock is probably my favorite genre.

    but a few questions.
    is Chicago considered prog rock?
    Styx?
    some Boston?

    I would think possibly...

Try the new Pain Of Salvation, I think it's their best album since Remedy Lane.

There are some of the more symphonic prog elements in each of those bands, but I don't consider them as "prog". Doesn't affect that I do listen to those bands from time to time.

Out of curiosity, what are your favorite prog bands?

No. Period. I grew up with this.

Chicago: Some great early songs. Make Me Smile is one one of the finest of the 60s. But not progrock unless that term has no meaning.

    Styx. Pure Shite.

    Boston. Pure shite.

    None of them progrock.

Progrock in the classic definition: Genesis (with Gabriel and at least Trick of the Tail); Gentle Giant; King Crimson; Yes; Van Der Graaf Generator; Pink Floyd; Jethro Tull; maybe Gong and Camel; perhaps early Electric Light Orchestra... not classic pop like Chicago and certainly not unrepentant shite.

BTW I know what I am talking about. Dinosaur here, Jurassic period and fading.

ok. Just because you grew up with the music doesn't mean you get to determine what is good or not

I wouldn't get too worked up about someone's opinion.

    How did I get here
    Home Page:
Styx is pure prog rock excess. Of course it's shite, but with concept albums, overwrought grandeur and pretentiousness and insipid pop, they're more prog than not by a longshot.

BTW, @insidious meme , thanks for the Henry Cow recommendation, digging them. Every time I think I've caught up to everything that was going on in British rock in the 70s, another great band pops up.

I slap an IMO after every declaration of things. Keeps the triggering to a minimum.

Regarding the definition of progrock, having been in the center of it does help somewhat. Unless there is no meaning to anything upon which why even ask? Chicago, Boston and Styx are not progrock. (I do hear you anetode but somehow giving those guys credit for being in the genre rankles.)

How did I not mention ELP? Now there is overwrought progrock for you - although I love it.

Beyond that, I was just having some inebriated fun guys. Now that I am sober, I still think that Boston and Styx really are unrepentant shite. ;-)

Yes, all IMO; it is the only one that I have. :)

yeah, I understand not calling them prog. Prog elements, but not full on like the ones you listed.

    "Rankles?" Isn't religion man. :p

I've only been in the genre intensively mostly since I got on the internet way back around 96. Research and hanging around key people never hurt.

ok, I have to ask, what makes styx shite? I understand the argument for Boston, but not styx. They seem pretty talented. Tracks like "nothing ever goes as planned" show that, and shows their more progressive side. The whole paradise theater album shows that (though some tracks, like "too much time on my hands" don't belong, and show the divide between Shaw and deyoung)

I could be wrong, but the way i read his reply I felt like he was just trying to continue ruffling your feathers a bit :)

I need to check out more styx and boston.. I heard some of their stuff when i was much younger and only really got into this world of music myself maybe 10 years ago (first prog band i ever heard was DT) and there's been a ton of artists to discover!

Oh my. One of my few regrets. Quite a few years back now, I went to the Knitting Factory, where they had two stages in different rooms. I was there to check out some bands in one of the other genres I listen to, but didn't know there was another band playing the other stage. Yes, SGM. In fact while waiting in line to buy tickets, I came across a couple of prog rock people I knew from when I hang out at the local prog rock cd vendor. They asked me if I was there to see SGM, but told them I was actually there to see the other thing. I could have made a switch, but sadly I didn't.
