It is quite a large case. Not super heavy but if I was to travel with the Raal on a flight, I would use the case. Keeps also the drivers safe during transport.

Just to clarify, when you say the frame, you mean the entire carbon fiber part on the hinge? I only looked casually, but would you be able to highlight this in a picture when you have the chance? Wondering in regards to still wanting to come up with my own headband for these.

Yes, all of the carbon fiber including the metal shaft connecting the carbon fiber to the headband is all one assembly, and this assembly is threaded into the headband and fixed with loctite. I don't have a picture handy to show this but I'll ask Alex to see if he has a disassembly picture.

I read some music producers saying that Sr1a could substitute their near field monitors when they need to travel for work. Would be very interesting if someone compare our prefer their Raal versus those Genelec/Focal/etc monitors.... really interesting . cheers

I have Genelec 1034Bs and 8040Bs. SR1 does not give the same experience as either of them. I think if a producer got used to the SR1 sound it could be a substitute for the monitors entirely, they could then take them on the road and get the same experience wherever they are. I think that's the stated use-case from RAAL for these.

Just because they’d use it while traveling doesn’t mean they wouldn’t use monitors instead if they were available to them while on the road. It’s still just a headphone. There is no true soundstage playing out in front of you.

I got to hear a pair recently, and while they did so much right, I felt nervous about moving my head and shifting them in any way on my head. Slight shifts in placement greatly affected what you hear. They also have a few odd pressure points that didn’t inspire confidence that I could move around or bob my head while listening.

it’s an impressive piece of gear. I just wonder how the next iteration or two will be, ergonomically.

Although by the time you pack up the SR1a, power amp, adapter box... you're not that far off from a set of small monitors. Heck, a pair of Genelec 8010's or 20's might even be smaller than that stack.

Quoting RAAL: "Experience mixing, mastering, and home listening with unparalleled accuracy and realism in a soundfield devoid of room acoustics and comb-filtering caused by work surface reflections." So their argument would be that if you travel with a RAAL rig it will sound the same everywhere, unlike with monitors.

I agree if you have to carry an amp with that much power its going to get hefty. Smallest I have personally seen is the Benchmark and that would require another case the same size. But if this is your job, yeah, might be worth it.

You could use an amplifier that resides at the destination location with the requisite power I guess, but it would sound different.

If I were traveling, then Schiit's potential offering becomes a tempting package just to ditch the extra adapter box.

Looking at it from a road warrior production viewpoint though, chances are I'd have a few pieces of rack mounted gear in a travel case so I'd lean towards getting a lightweight 1U or 2U power amp (leaning 2U for bigger/quieter fans, or with the bigger chassis the fans might not come on at all).

    I'm just theorycrafting here.

When you're demoing these it's hard to get a firm idea about fit and the adjustment latitude. If you're getting pressure on the temples you can flex the headband outward (and vice versa for a pressure point on top of your head).

I agree that these don't have the best stability on your head because of the way the headband works. One thing I didn't like about them is I couldn't really solder or fix things with them on, since I'd lean in to get a closer look and they'll slide forward.

My feeling is that for practical mixing purposes the specific power amp used isn't going to make or break things, people would just use whatever monitors onsite and that's a much bigger difference than a different power amp.

With the Schiit amp you could conceivably travel with the entire stack, but R-R definitely didn't have this in mind when they designed the cans.

Yes, I was told to go nuts wrangling and bending that headband and other bits. And I agree, having the SR1A slide forward and making most of the bass disappear when you lean in or look a touch downward killed the experience for me, even with that rear strap fairly tight to the back of my head.

How were the headphones moving forward when you have a strap that goes behind the head to hold them back?

They still move under the weight of the drivers and enclosure. The rig is kind of flimsy.

Just wanted to post that the Jotunheim R has launched if you've been waiting since there was no official announcement that I'm aware of.

    https://www.schiit.com/products/jotunheim-r

I don't have a speaker amp set up or resistor box, I've been waiting for this amp so I can't compare, but I'll definitely post SR1A + Jot R impressions once it arrives.

If you look closely, you'll also notice that the Jotunheim R + Bifrost 2 bundle gets you $99 discount on the Bifrost 2, when compared to buying both separately.

Soon. I need to get the foam cushioned replace. The unit I have is a prototype in terms of the headband, so I had to jigger some things up. The production unit is more comfortable, but I at least want to send it out so you guys can get a sense of its sound.
