Hi Josh, feel free to message me for help. Also I'm pretty close to you so worst-case I might be able to help you in person.

Our poll suggests Ropieee is the most popular software choice for Pi users here. Out of the box, it works great with Roon software. Enable RopieeeXL and it also works well with UPNP, Spotify etc

Here's a Ropieee setup guide for beginners

The guide doesn't include the new Pi Zero 2 model, which is a great and inexpensive entry point. Can someone confirm it works with RopieeeXL?

    *1 for PiCorePlayer inclusion.

One other note. I was recently having trouble getting PcP to work with Pi2AES. After a major PcP update and trying lots of other things, I finally tried updating the extensions and, voila, everything is fine.

These are amazing little computers, but you have to keep them up to date.

Is anyone using Gentoo with Pi2AES? I can't get any signal out of it to DAC from either Airplay or streaming via UPnP.

I have DAC set to the Pi2AES driver.
Should "audiocard" or "audio device" be set to something? The dropdowns don't give any options.
    TIA

Try setting it to the headphone output on the Pi first to confirm that all is working. For my Pi2AES I am using Allo DigiOne for the DAC. That might help???

It doesn't recognize any audio outputs unfortunately. When I run system status audio out is blank.

Make a new SD Card and try again. You could just run the Pi by itself to get started I have virtually no experience with Gentoo Player.

Sigh... I'm fed up with making new cards man...I spend more time imaging cards than I do listening to music. I *really* don't want a subscription service just to listen to music but one of these days I may just pay for Roon and be done with it.

Did you hit execute and then restart after it was done? Most OSs need to reboot after changing the output device for it to take effect.

Side note, I've been using moOde audio for 3+ years and I haven't had any issues.

Yup after any setting change I reboot. The problem is that at no point did it recognize any outputs.

MoOde won't work with Audirvana because Audirvana is a piece of crap. I'm trying to find an OS for the Pi that Audirvana will do UPnP without freaking out. Tried Volumio, MoOde, Ropieee, Ropieee XL and now I'm onto Gentoo.

Tip for people using UPnP with an Android control point app: if playback stops after the first few tracks when your device's screen is off, try fooling with the battery/power-saving settings to ensure the app will not be put to sleep or shut down in the background.

This was never an issue for me in the past, but a new phone with Android 12 and Samsung's enthusiastic power-management settings resulted in this behavior. The cure - at least for my default control-point app Hi-Fi Cast, haven't tried it with anything else yet - was to go into Settings | Apps | Hi-Fi-Cast/your control-point | Battery , and select 'Unrestricted'. In One UI 4 / Android 12, this setting allows the app to "use battery in the background without restrictions".

Here are some suggestions for older Android versions, again specifically for Hi-Fi Cast but probably applicable to similar apps. Equivalent strategies will likely also work with iOS control-points.

@dasman66 - try this on your Samsung with mconnect and Bubble.

@Biodegraded good suggestion, but I've moved control to unused tablet I had laying around (old nvidia sheild). With Mconnect and HQplayer embedded on the rPi - it's been completely bulletproof... haven't had to reboot anything in months.

Do any of these software packages support airplay2, yet? I'm using Moode, but it only supports v1.

I believe most systems use Shairport Sync for Airplay, which does not have Airplay 2 support in the main branch yet. There are instructions for building the development branch which does have support on their Github page, but I have not tested them. I doubt any of the typical packaged software will have used this branch though.
