Sometimes it pays to revisit old stuff... As in my case, revisiting the venerable (aniso) Yamaha HP-1. Applied some damping and some custom-made leather pads. And here we go ...

I cannot tell you how much I love those mids. Simply miraculous.

This is what I want my HP-1s to be when they grow up, lol. That looks badass. I 'd love to hear them. Great work!

Nice work, would love to hear those.
What damping scheme did you apply. Those pads dimensions looks like stock pads.

The driver was damped with felt>paper>foam>felt and the damping is being pressed against the driver by means of the outer lid, which itself has a ring of felt around it that holds the lid in the cup and allows some airflow at the same time.
The pads are inspired by my NAD RP18 pads, which are not soft enough for my ears. So I just made my own pads using a ring of soft foam [about 1cm thick) and covering the whole thing with some fine lambskin leather. The pads are larger in diameter than the stock HP-1 pads. They do not rest on the cups directly, there is a ring of felt (about 4mm) underneath them (the magenta thingy in the pic).
This set is basically an on-ear set but really soft against the ears, although the wood leaves it a little heavy.

Always a pleasure to see what you've come up with.

I have a pair of HP-2 that I wanted to play around with. I measured them in stock form and found a fairly significant driver imbalance. You don't have any magic method to deal with this sort of thing, do you? I imagine an electronic passive filter fix may be the only way...

Could be driver variance, but you could also check if one of the drivers is not properly sealed to the baffle or the damping behind one of the drivers has deteriorated more.

Did you measure multiple times? do you get same variation? Maybe check the pads and seal.

I guess I had better take them apart finally, and see what's inside.

I took multiple measurements. One side (can't remember which off the top of my head) had the pad removed at some point in order to see the construction underneath. It was re-adhered to the cup before measuring. It's possible that it was positioned poorly but it seems unlikely. The treble side of the headphone seems to have little imbalance as well.
