Yes, I enjoyed. Such a sad story.

Here's that beautiful old song, Summertime. I don't think you'll mind that it is in Tamil! I think this is a wonderful young woman...

I was just listening to a metal band called Botanist and they’re kind of cool. But then they started singing about photosynthesis and oxygen and I had to turn it off. Geeeeeezus

Andy Bell - The View From Halfway Down

I’m really excited to share this one. One of my favorite new releases. I have no idea how to describe it though. It’s not super genre blending, it’s just completely unique I’ve never heard anything like it.

So put it in psychedelic folk-ish rock or non-hard rock for the sake of getting you an idea of what it is.

lots of interesting sound effects hazy and psychedelic, including the way he uses his voice, sometimes singing the words in reverse it seems. I don’t know what else to say honestly. Just definitely give it a listen, like I said, one of my favorite albums of 2020. I think you’ll like it from the get go.

here’s a quote from a couple people on bandcamp:

“1968 UK psychedelia & early 70s cosmic Krautrock filtered through a 90s filter of Britpop, Creation records, and Acid House pop, as befits someone who played with bands Ride and Oasis. Yet it also sounds remarkably modern. One of the few records this year that put a smile on my face.”

“Absolute psychedelic masterpiece. This album raises my spirits. I can not think of any better praise than that. This record fills me with joy. Skywalker is just stunning.”

The Langley Schools Music Project - Innocence and Despair

A music school teacher recorded songs from his music classes at four different schools in the Langley District of British Columbia in the late 70’s. Instead of stupid children’s songs he taught them pop songs of the time by The Beach Boys, David Bowie, etc The music was recorded in a gym. And forgotten until someone found the records and sent them to a label who released a collection of the songs on this album in 2001. A vinyl version was released in 2018.

The sound these children’s choir recordings is what makes it really special. Super minimalist instrumentation and and overall a very haunting sound. SQ is terrible but what do you expect. The final result is just awesome. Turns Beach Boys songs from happy jingles to gut churning anthems.

I honestly don’t listen to it that much but definitely acknowledge how special it is and it has a place on my list of favorite albums of all time.

I personally love artwork that turns the everyday into something truly unique. I believe it doesn’t take a special, new idea to make a great work of art, it just requires opening up and being honest and putting a part of yourself into it. And that is what makes it unique. This music teacher turned kids music classes into something unlike anything ever recorded.

A quote from the music teacher, Hans Fenger:

“I knew virtually nothing about conventional music education, and didn't know how to teach singing. Above all, I knew nothing of what children's music was supposed to be. But the kids had a grasp of what they liked: emotion, drama, and making music as a group. Whether the results were good, bad, in tune or out was no big deal -- they had élan. This was not the way music was traditionally taught. But then I never liked conventional 'children's music,' which is condescending and ignores the reality of children's lives, which can be dark and scary. These children hated 'cute.' They cherished songs that evoked loneliness and sadness.”

A bit of country twang mixed with Beach House style bliss pop played late at night in a broke down saloon in Texas somewhere. And a long endless road through country in the dead of night.

    Mainliner- Mellow Out

Mad psychedelic “noise rock” but better than anything I’ve heard put under the genre of “noise rock” before. To me this is super heavy frantic psychedelic rock. If you like the sound of distorted electric guitar and 3 guys rocking out as hard as they can check this one out. I’m not sure ever ever heard such blisteringly loud speaker destroying distorted madness before.

It’s a Japanese band and the album was originally released in 1996. It was quickly sold out and unavailable until re released by Riot Season Records in 2003.

Zephaniah OHora - Listening to the Music

Unapologetic country music. Really sounds like classic country recorded in Nashville in the 70’s but this album was recorded in 2020 in Brooklyn, NY.

“People Think You Have To Be From Texas Or Nashville To Play This Music,” Says Zephaniah OHora, “But That’s Not The Way I See It. Country’s All About Being True To Yourself And Telling Honest, Authentic Stories. You Can Do That Anywhere.”

    - Zephaniah OHora

Awesome songwriting, a talented backup band with twinkling piano and twangy slide guitar. Sound quality is excellent, it has this super smooth clean sound to it, and his rich voice is captured beautifully.

it’s old style music but the songs are modern.

    from the record label:

“Written and recorded in his adopted hometown of Brooklyn, NY, OHora’s outstanding new album, ‘Listening To The Music,’ is proof of that. Produced by Neal Casal, the collection fuses timeless twang with modern sensibilities, tipping its cap to the likes of Merle Haggard and Gram Parsons as it explores a distinctly urban, 21st century landscape through a classic country lens. OHora is a master craftsman backed by a virtuosic band here, and his songs absolutely crackle with electricity, moving beyond throwback revivalism to break fresh artistic ground with dazzling fretwork and dizzying pedal steel. The result is a record all about the power of music to bind us to our past and reinvent our future, a lush, intoxicating celebration of melody and memory that bridges the considerable miles between Bakersfield and Brooklyn.

“It was actually New York that first introduced me to country music,” says OHora, whose rich baritone voice belies his New England roots. “When I moved here, I wasn’t actually playing all that much, but I was really into collecting old records. The more of those classic country albums I discovered around the city, the more I studied and absorbed the structure and the spirit of the music.””

    - In De Garden
    - African Shores

Two awesome modern instrumental Reggae albums from one of the old roots reggae musicians. They’ve got a great sway and rhythm to them and are quite captivating and musical for instrumental reggae. It’s not dub or some kind of shitty dubstep. This is true roots reggae with no vocals and a jazz influence. I dare you to listen to these albums and not sway back and forth and feel joy rise in your chest.

    From Wikipedia:

“Gordon grew up in Jones Town, Kingston, Jamaica as one of eight children. He went to Kingston's Catholic Alpha Boys School, where he learned to play trombone and string bass. He began his career in 1964 with The Skatalites. He became the main trombonist of Studio One and he recorded for all major producers of Jamaican music in ska, rocksteady and reggae.

At Studio One Gordon met Lee Perry and played with many reggae artists during the rock steady years. He played on records by B.B. Seaton, The Heptones, Bob Andy and Keith Hudson. From 1965 to 1978 he was Bob Marley's trombonist and performed on albums such as Kaya and Exodus.

One solo album was produced by Lee Perry in 1973 (Musical Bones), which was originally released on Dip in the UK on blank labels in 300 copies only. His landing in England in the 80s influenced a mostly British-born reggae groups as Aswad with songs such as "Warrior Charge" and "Dub Fire". Returning to Jamaica he worked on different recordings. In 1997, he started touring with Justin Hinds, then joined the Wailers and the Skatalites in 2004 until September 2008.”

One of my favorite modern Christmas songs.

    from the album

    Low - Christmas
    song: “Just Like Christmas”

the drums at the end of the song! Perfect. Typical Low. They know just when to hit.

    Michael Brook - Cobalt Blue

Who would think that my favorite album of his, especially considering all the special effects, would be a live album. Sounds and feels like a studio album. Gorgeous sound quality.

He has such a unique sound. He actually invented his own instrument which is a big part of it. Called an “infinite guitar”. Apparently used on the U2 song “With or Without You”. I also heard that he taught the U2 guitarist how to play or gave him instruction but I can’t find that mentioned anywhere.

His discography is highly varied, he often teams up with world musicians like Touamani Diabate and Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn for example. But this album is his work.

it’s unlike anything you’ve ever heard. Prepare to enter another dimension in time and space, this album really has the effect of warping your sense of reality and time. A great album to listen to while drinking drugs.

All electric with loop upon loop of swirling futuristic and haunting electric sounds that melt into each other and slowly build. I’ve never heard anything that sounds like this and so it’s hard to describe it further. Even the percussion is totally unique sounding more like a tabla than a guitar set (maybe it is?) or maybe it’s made by his guitar.

    from “Ambient Music Guide” -
“The Canadian-born Brook is not an especially prolific solo artist, but when you make albums as good as these, who cares? These two ethno-ambient works from early in his career are his best albums and remain high watermarks in the fusion of world music with ambient electronics.

Brook's grounding is certainly solid, having in his early years studied Indian music with legendary minimalist composer La Monte Young. In the late 70's he began an association with Daniel Lanois and ambient pioneer Brian Eno, which led directly to the release of his first solo album Hybrid (1985). Featuring significant contributions from both Eno and Lanois, the album displays an intelligence and sensitivity reminiscent of the music of his mentors but with a far deeper ethnic sound. Instruments from South America, Africa and Eurasia feature along with Brook's self-styled "infinite guitar" sound and the marriage of what seem like disparate elements is utterly convincing throughout. Eno and Lanois were also on board for Cobalt Blue (1992)which, if anything, refines the already high standards of its predecessor.”

The percussion on the first song is, I think, Egyptian Tabla. It's an amazing instrument, sometimes played with a slim stick in one hand, and the fingers of the other: making mistakes probably hurts!

    Enjoying the music :)

That's a cool factoid re: U2. I think the other figure looming in the background here is Peter Gabriel. I recall that Brooks had a record, perhaps multiple, on Real World and of course Gabriel and U2 shared production teams in the late '80s/early '90s. A lot of direct and indirect cross-pollination going on during a really fertile period for both acts. They both showed up on Robbie Robertson's self-titled record and at different times guested on some of The Call's strongest work just to name a couple of examples.

I’m getting into free jazz lately. Interestingly I never really got into other jazz sub genres despite taking a jazz history course in college in hopes of getting into jazz more. But free jazz has been really captivating for me lately.

    Anna Högberg Attack - s/t

Here’s an album I recently discovered and really like. I’m not that well versed in jazz language to describe it in much detail because I don’t own much for comparison. I’d describe it as explosive and with a very wide range of dynamic impact ranging from quieter passages to chaotic madness. Very talented musicianship and great recording quality. Incredible tonality from the brass. And great drumming as well.
