It seems SBAF needs more blogs specifically a music blog. I’ll see how this goes. If it’s appreciated I’ll keep going, if not I’ll stop.

I’ll start randomly with one of my favorite albums.

Warsaw Village Band - People’s Spring

Must be heard to be believed. It’s Polish folk music using traditional instruments and style and rhythms but with dare I say a heavy metal influence? It’s definitely f'ing heavy and emotionally gripping. Amazing they get this kind of sound with the instruments they’re using. Think more folky Beirut but way heavier.

Their Wikipedia page is quite insightful and full of information. Click on “about”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw_Village_Band

They have many albums out now but this is the one I’m most familiar with.

Here's a rare recording of Peter Tosh playing acoustic songs, just him and a guitar. It's unreal, the way he layers the rhythm of his guitar playing with his vocals is totally unique I've never heard anything like it. Unfortunately ever other track is a short interview and some are kind of silly, like when he says "it is totally illegal for me not to smoke herb". Some are fairly profound though, when he talks about the "shytstem" for example, or black people embracing the color of their skins. He's very direct. The first song, "I am that I am" is my favorite but all are good.

I also bought the CD version of this album at Peter Tosh's old home when I was living in Jamaica for a summer. Which has subsequently been raided and shut down.

All I could find is a full album on one track, but it's worth listening to the whole thing, it just means you can't skip the interviews.

More reggae! Because these two I can’t wait to share.

The first is a live recording of Bob Marley at a recording studio in Sausalito, CA. The tracks are available for downloaded at 320kbps and the sound quality is equal to a studio CD. But it’s the best musical performance of his career IMO. It’s just after Catch a Fire came out so it has that sound and many of those songs. But the musicianship is amazing. The keyboardist and percussionist are on fire and it results in the funkiest, tightest Bob Marley you’ve ever heard.

    https://archive.org/details/BobMarleyTheWailersRecordPlant1973

And this is a recording called “Bob Marley acoustic sessions”. It’s listen only I couldn’t find a Download online anywhere. And my version has 2x more songs including a 15 minute version of Waiting in Vein. It’s really good though, hearing him perform in such a raw intimate way. SQ is shit but it doesn’t matter.

    enjoy!

If you are like me and have heard Legend one million times and thought you could not get excited by Bob Marley, do not miss this Sausalito live performance. It’s really great.

    Orchestra Baobab - Bamba

I’m kind of out of my element trying to describe this album, so I’ll quote from Wikipedia about the band.

Orchestra Baobab is a Senegalese band established in 1970 as the house band of the Baobab Club in Dakar. Many of the band's original members had previously played with Star Band de Dakar in the 1960s. Directed by timbalero and vocalist Balla Sidibé, the group features saxophonists Issa Cissoko and Thierno Koité, two singers, two guitarists and a rhythm section with drums, congas and bass guitar. Since their formation, the band has predominantly played a mix of son cubano, Wolof music, and to a lesser extent Mande musical traditions.”

    Wikipedia page for more information

It’s gorgeous music. And unlike similar sounding music, isn’t super happy dance music, its a bit somber which When combined with this genre is beautiful.

    Luna - Bewitched

Kind of a hidden gem I think though I don’t really know. Just never heard other people mention this album or seen much buzz. But it’s so good. Ahead of its time I think. If it came out during the dream pop Beach House explosion it would’ve been huge. Also none of their other albums sound anything like this. Don’t like any of them.

It’s dreamy spacey sounding rock. Really good songwriting. Nice emotional presence, it’s rather somber not happy crap. But not sad music by any means. Along the lines of Beach House.

sound quality is really good as an aside.

Joan Shelley - Live at the Bomhard

Here’s an album that I think a lot of you will like. Female vocal fans and fans of exceptional recordings. Its one of the best live recordings I’ve heard, really good maybe on the level of Eric Clapton Unplugged! It’s a bit on the...dare I say - sappy - side for me but I like the English folk revival and old English folk music genre bending stuff in general like Fairport Convention, Espers, The Valerie Project, Midlake’s The Courage of Others, etc. This album is, well, for lack of a better word- sappier than those albums/bands but when I’m in the right mood I still like it.

it’s also a great album to test 2 aspects of your headphones/iem’s.

    1. Her voice will become shrill at times as it ascends through the FR range on phones with midrange Or upper midrange issues. With phones without “fuckery” as Marv calls it, her voice will remain natural throughout every song.
    2. It’s a great album to test for clarity, resolution and speed. I might use this when tuning orthos to test to make sure I’ve achieved critical driver damping levels- that the driver is damped well enough for the diaphragm to be moving quickly as it is capable of.

The full album is not available on YouTube but here are some random tracks from the album.

John Scofield with Medeski Martin and Wood - A Go Go

awesome Acid Jazz. Super funky. Medeski Martin and Wood (MMW) are an incredible band on their own, operating as kind of backup for the great guitar work of John Scofield is way overkill. They have a lot of their own solos as well, it’s well balanced between the guitar and MMW. Really great song crafting. Excellent sound quality.

One of my favorite jazz funk albums. An important part of my formative years (musically-speaking). Billy Martin is a god on the drums.

Yes he is! Dear God have you seen them live? Every show I've seen at some point the other two stop playing and he gets up and sits down near the front of the stage, usually near the audience because they usually play rather small venues, and just plays around with various percussive instruments for a Long time, then gets on the drum set and keeps going solo. So good.

    John Zorn - The Gift

an instrumental album that defies genre but I might say it’s Latin surf-ish rock or something? It’s a brilliant album both on the surface and as you let it sink in more deeply. It starts off rather joyful like a wrapped gift but with subtle dark undertones and as the album unfolds it reveals an inner darkness. The album artwork does a great job expressing this without giving anything away. But I can’t find anything but the cover online. Buy the album!

YouTube took down the full album sadly. Here’s the only track available

More John Zorn because he’s one of the most creative musicians around right now. If you listened to these 2 albums without knowing anything you would never in a million years know it was the same artist.

John Zorn and Milford Graves LIVE

If you like free jazz this is for you. If you’re a fan of John Coltrane’s Interstellar Space, definitely listen.

I happen to have been studying percussion with Milford Graves when he played this concert and got to hear him talk about it for a whole class. No I’m not a master percussionist he was a terrible teacher but very entertaining.

so this is basically two very very gifted musicians just walking on stage and playing their hearts out trying their best to get at that indescribable thing that all music and art tries to get at. “IT” as Jack Kerouac would say.

ahh they took the video down. Here’s a link to a different but also awesome show by the two of them.

Do you have Qobuz? Can SBAF pay for a monthly subscription so you can share a long playlist?

You've always had the best finds. This thread isn't the most popular, but it has not gone unnoticed. Simply good solid stuff without the Sirius XMU crap (young artists who have grand concepts as Picasso, but can only paint like my son when he was in the first grade - he was really really bad at drawing and still is). Or maybe we have similar sensibilities.

I don't have Qobuz but I have Tidal. Unfortunately some of this stuff, like the last two albums and the Peter Tosh acoustic, that particular Orchestra Baobab album which is especially good and a third percussion album by John Zorn I want to post aren't on Tidal. Youtube might have a more diverse selection than anything else. I just made a mix tape recently (yes I still call them mix tapes) I could probably find all the tracks from that on YouTube and post it. I got lots of juicy finds thanks to time spent searching for new music and some musician friends with huge music libraries.

So when listening to the John Zorn and Milford Graves album, don’t try to follow along with melody or hooks like you do with pop music. This is meant to just kind of be absorbed. Just let go and let it hit you, flow through you. Absorb it, don’t try to dissect it or understand it.

Milford Graves at this point in his career had been studying human heart beats for many years, and had tons of recordings of them. He recorded sick peoples’ heart beats and listened. Different illnesses and listened. Healthy heart beats and listened. He said he could hear it and that it was bad medicine to listen to a sick heart beat. He also had a lot of understanding of different indigenous percussive rhythms and culture. You should have seen him dance.

He puts all that understanding along with a lifetime of what he called “woodshedding” (locking your self in the woodshed out back and practicing for endless hours) into his drumming. So just letting this music and all that he puts into it absorb is an experience in and of itself. Not to mention John Zorn’s creative genius.

Ok time for some pop music. The first album released in 2020 by a new rock band who seems to think it’s still the eighties.Really good song writing, vocals and lyrics. Dressed up in an eighties sound. It’s an easy fun listen. Sound quality is great.

Nice! I’m glad this isn’t going into the void! :). I love Orchestra Baobab. Such a unique sound.

as for Qobuz I can’t afford another subscription service, I’ve already got YouTube music simply to have a way of sepersting ambient instrumental music from the rest to listen to at certain times like first thing in the morning. And Amazon Music to make playlists for weird reasons. I could try swapping amazon with Qobuz. How would a Qobuz playlist be more useful than these YouTube playlists?
