this is rad thank you! I don’t know if I see the incredible string band in it though they were always a challenging listen due to something about the [insert expert music descriptor word here] of the music.

reminds me more of a Nordic Warsaw Village Band. Awesome.

    16 Horsepower - Hoarse

This is going to be tough. If you listened to Vic Chesnutt who I recently posted this is.a similar but very different sounding twist on Americana. It’s heavy and full on. I’m honestly at a loss for words to describe them. Some similar band members to the also great band Woven Hand.

This is a live album and has always been a favorite of mine but if SQ is of utmost concern to you check out their studio albums.

Ok Wikipedia does a much better job I will let them describe the band for you.

“Their music often invoked religious imagery dealing with conflict, redemption, punishment, and guilt through David Eugene Edwards's lyrics and the heavy use of traditional bluegrass, gospel, and Appalachian instrumentation cross-bred with rock. For the bulk of its career, the band consisted of Edwards, Jean-Yves Tola, and Pascal Humbert, the latter two formerly of the French band Passion Fodder. After releasing four studio albums and touring extensively, the group broke up in 2005, citing "mostly political and spiritual" differences. The members remain active in the groups Woven Hand and Lilium.”

“It has always been difficult to describe the band's music in simple terms as it borrowed just as heavily from folk music, country, bluegrass, and traditional as it did from rock music.[1] 16 Horsepower and Edwards' later project Woven Hand were described by one critic as "incendiary gospel, hallowed folk and mordant tones infused with a high, dark theatricality worthy of Nick Cave."[2]

Edwards' grandfather was a Nazarenepreacher and young Edwards often went along as his elder preached the gospel to various peoples. This experience colored his approach to songwriting as well as the instrumentation employed to develop the band's unique sound. On several tracks over the course of the band's career, Edwards evoked decisive Christian imagery, particularly that of the redemptive capacity of Jesus Christ.

16 Horsepower, especially in their early days, saw themselves first and foremost as a rock band. David Eugene Edwards, however, had an interest in all things from past times, including musical instruments. One instrument that was paramount during the nascent days of 16 Horsepower was the Chemnitzer concertina.[citation needed] It was erroneously credited as a bandoneon (a closely related instrument) on Sackcloth 'n' Ashes. The antique instrument used on the early tours and recordings was falling apart and quite cumbersome to tour with; some time before the sessions for Low Estate, it was replaced with the more modern American-made Patek brand instrument.”

Very nice. It's a bit like The Doors crashed into Bluegrass. Enjoying.

Haha nice way of describing it. Though it’s darker in tone than the doors. Maybe it needs a metal band thrown in there as well.

There's even a touch of Leonard Cohen in there. Have to admit: after twenty minutes I had to listen to some Grateful Dead :)

This was just fantastic. As silly as it sounds, I knew I would love it from the cover art alone. The music did not disappoint. My wife walked in while I had this on and said "hey there depressed guy". Sometimes I am in the mood for a gut wrenching vibe and this was it.

I am just now realizing in my 40s that the Grateful Dead are really good! I've been enjoying this 3-disc set of their Cornell show from 1977. Great sound, music, and lovely packaging.

i think their music and even more so, their vibe, is unique. I'm not so fond of their later studio sound, but everything else, from acid-drenched psychedelia to American ballads is just magic

I wish Dawes made music this beautiful all the time. God Damn!

This is an acoustic version of one of their songs. “Free As We Wanna Be”.

Folk/Americana/singer songwriter. Absolutely gorgeous vocals over simple guitar.

    Winston C.W. - Good Guess

it’s like free jazz meets folk music. Not as in jazz music with vocals but really the rhythms and musical styles of both genres are combined. His vocal delivery could almost completely be categorized as traditional folk but all the accompanying music is free-ish jazz (or maybe it’s not free exactly I’m not an expert in jazz sub genres but you get the idea)

His sound reminds me of Arthur Russell in many ways.

really interesting listen with good song writing and instrumentation. Good sound quality too.

    Darren Korb - Hades Soundtrack

An epic 2.5 hour video game soundtrack. That sounds bad but this is actually really good. It’s basically one 2.5 hour composition. Lots of elements of folk music and old English folk music mixed with metal influences though it never escalates psst acoustic guitar and a fairly mellow pace. All instrumental. Fairly dark but great background music for the right mood. When you feel like you wish you could be slaying dragons.

    Ghana Soundz (compilation)

There was some amazing music coming out of Ghana and Africa as a whole in the 70’s. This is my favorite compilation of music from Ghana in the 70’s. It’s some of the funkiest most groovy ass shaking music I’ve ever heard. Seriously if you can hold still while listening to this music there is something wrong with you. Enough said. Best dance party music ever.

Sir Richard Bishop - The Freak Of Araby

Sir Richard Bishop is a guitar master to say the least. He’s not only incredibly talented but he can play anything in any style. Most of his albums are solo acoustic guitar but this one is with a backing band and he plays Egyptian music. The result is awesome.

Pitchfork describes what I wanted to say about Sir Richard Bishop better than I ever could. So I will quote them.

“It can be hard to judge work by an artist when you know that they can do pretty much anything once their mind's set. Guitarist and Sun City Girls founder Richard Bishop has a fluid and not overly nerdy mastery of a shit-ton of musical styles. Dude can improvise or play intricate compositions; he can go slow and weird or fast as f**k; he can play like he's at a Turkish funeral or Hindu religious ceremony or Western swing wedding, do a perfect Django-esque tune at breakneck speed, and then pull off a dirty bar-band take on "Radar Love". It's only when you take in all of it that you get close to what Bishop's own style is: he's a shape-shifter, plain and simple. As soon as you have him figured out and pinned down, he's well onto the next thing. Even the most casual fan will warn that you never quite know what you're going to get.”
This time you get an album of instrumental Egyptian music with a backup band that is just a perfect album from the song writing to the execution to the musicianship of the whole band to the recording quality.

    Monolord - Vaenir (instrumental)

Monolord is a metal band that started out with a couple good albums with minimal mediocre vocals. They seemed to have realized this and proceeded to re-record two previous vocal albums instrumental but with many additional changes and riffs added in. It’s sooo good. Their 2 instrumental albums are my favorite metal albums excluding Mono since they aren’t entirely in the Metal arena, there’s the progressive rock element as well.

This is fairly slow, actually pretty simple metal with lots of gorgeously recorded distorted guitar that is often low pitch deep and rich. Their riffs and tonality set them apart from every other metal band. It’s heavy shit. And It’s just beautiful music. Especially with neutral headphones thst have flat lower midrange to convey the rich electric guitar work.

Some might argue this is more sludge metal or “stoner rock” but I could care less about such specific genre differentiations and I hate the phrase “stoned rock”
